The 2013 ServeTheHome guide wrote a pfSense 2.0.2 NanoBSD image directly to an SSD with Windows tools. That method is obsolete for current pfSense deployments. Today, prepare a USB installer with the Netgate Installer, boot the firewall from it, and install pfSense onto the intended SSD. For advance preparation, install each SSD in a compatible staging system, then verify boot mode, interfaces, and configuration on the final hardware.
What “image pfSense onto an SSD” means
The phrase can describe three different jobs:
- Install pfSense on an SSD: The current, recommended approach. The USB stick or ISO is temporary boot media; the installer puts pfSense on the SSD.
- Write a disk image directly to an SSD: The 2013 ServeTheHome article’s approach, using a 4 GB pfSense 2.0.2 NanoBSD VGA image and Windows’ PhysGUI/physdiskwrite workflow. It is historical, not the current default procedure. Read the original article.
- Clone an installed SSD: A possible shortcut for controlled, closely matched systems, but it copies the entire installation and its hardware, boot, and configuration assumptions.
For different hardware, a fresh installation followed by a configuration restore is generally safer than cloning a whole disk.
What you need
- A compatible firewall platform: AMD64 for 64-bit Intel/AMD systems, or an appropriate AARCH64 image for supported Netgate ARM appliances.
- A target SATA or NVMe SSD supported by the system firmware and hardware.
- A separate USB drive for the installer, plus another computer for downloading and preparing it.
- Console access through VGA, serial, KVM, or IPMI, and access to the BIOS/UEFI boot settings.
- A backup of anything valuable on the target SSD. Installation erases the selected destination.
Where practical, disconnect unrelated disks before installation. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong drive and avoids conflicts between existing installations. Record whether the system boots in UEFI or legacy mode.

Download the current Netgate Installer through the Netgate download instructions. A Netgate Store Account is required. Choose the image that matches the machine:

- AMD64 ISO: IPMI virtual optical media or physical optical media.
- AARCH64 Memstick: supported 64-bit ARM Netgate appliances.
Use the filename currently shown by Netgate; names can change. The Netgate Installer checks whether the system is eligible for pfSense Plus; systems that are not eligible may need pfSense CE instead. The installer fetches packages over the Internet, so this is not a self-contained offline installation image. See the Netgate Installer documentation.
Verify the downloaded .gz file against Netgate’s published SHA-256 checksum before decompressing it. Substitute the actual downloaded filename in these commands:
# Windows PowerShell
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 .netgate-installer-amd64.img.gz
# Linux
sha256sum netgate-installer-amd64.img.gz
# macOS
shasum -a 256 netgate-installer-amd64.img.gzCompare the complete hash with Netgate’s published value. If it differs, download the file again. Netgate notes that Safari may automatically decompress downloads, preventing verification of the original compressed file.

Decompress the archive before writing the installer media, as described in Netgate’s media preparation guide. The result should be an .img file. Write that image to the USB device in raw-image mode; do not simply copy the file onto the USB as an ordinary document.

Windows graphical workflow
Use a reputable raw-image-writing utility that supports .img files. Because no specific current utility is verified here, choose one from its official source and confirm its compatibility yourself.
- Insert the USB drive. In Disk Management, confirm its capacity and model so you can distinguish it from the target SSD.
- In the image writer, select the decompressed pfSense
.imgand the physical USB device. - Check the selected device again. Writing erases it; selecting the SSD or another disk can destroy its contents.
- Start the write, wait for completion, then safely eject the USB. Windows may report an unfamiliar filesystem when the stick is reconnected; that does not mean the image should be copied as files.
Linux or FreeBSD command line
Identify the USB by model and capacity before writing. Device names can change when drives are inserted or detected, so do not assume a familiar name still identifies the same disk.
lsblk

dmesg | tailUnmount its partitions, then write to the whole USB device, not a partition. Replace the example device and filename with the ones you actually confirmed:

sudo umount /dev/sdX*
sudo dd if=netgate-installer-amd64.img of=/dev/sdX bs=16M status=progress conv=fsyncDestructive operation: dd overwrites the destination. If /dev/sdX names your computer’s system disk or the firewall’s target SSD instead of the USB, its data can be destroyed. For an NVMe USB device, the whole-device name may look like /dev/nvme1n1; a partition looks like /dev/nvme1n1p1. Confirm the device identity before running the command.

Install pfSense onto the SSD
- Insert the prepared USB into the firewall and connect a console.
- Use the firmware boot menu or boot-order settings to start from USB. Select the matching UEFI or legacy entry for the system and intended installation mode.
- Let the Netgate Installer start. Select the appropriate console type if prompted.
- If required, establish the network connection the installer needs to retrieve packages. Confirm link, addressing, DNS, default route, and Internet access.
- Select the intended SSD as the target. Verify its identity and capacity before confirming: the installer erases the selected drive. The USB installation media is not normally offered as a target in the documented workflow, but still confirm the destination carefully.
- Choose the filesystem and partition options presented, confirm the destructive operation, and wait for installation to finish.
- Shut down or reboot, remove the installer USB, and boot from the SSD. Complete interface assignment and web-configurator setup.
Netgate’s installer guide explains the current process. Appliance-specific reinstall documentation also notes that the installer writes pfSense to the chosen target and that leaving the USB attached can send the system back into the installer: see the Netgate 8200 reinstall guide.
Prepare SSDs in advance for deployment
To stage an SSD before it reaches its final firewall, install it in a compatible test chassis or staging system, boot the current installer from a separate USB, and install pfSense onto the SSD. Then shut down cleanly and label the drive with:
- Intended hardware target and pfSense edition.
- Installation date and firmware boot mode (UEFI or legacy).
- Console type and whether a configuration has been restored.
In the final firewall, confirm that the SSD is detected and first in boot order. Check the console and reassign interfaces if necessary before putting the unit into production. A staged SSD is not guaranteed to boot unchanged in every chassis: storage controllers, boot modes, console settings, and network-interface enumeration may differ.
Configuration restore or full-disk clone?
For different firewall hardware, use a fresh install and restore a pfSense configuration backup using Netgate’s current backup and restore documentation. A configuration backup separates settings from the source machine’s bootloader, disk layout, and other disk-level assumptions. Review interface assignments after restoring; NIC names and ordering can change between systems.

Cloning can be useful in a controlled fleet of identical hardware, boot modes, and storage layouts, but it is not a universal deployment method. Test a clone offline, confirm it boots on the destination, and check its configuration and network identity before connecting it beside the source. Two clones on the same network can cause management or network conflicts if their settings are not made unique.

The system starts the installer again
Remove the USB stick and reboot. Check that the SSD is detected and first in the firmware boot order. If the installation used UEFI but the firmware is booting in legacy mode (or vice versa), make the modes consistent. Confirm that the installation was written to the SSD rather than another device.
The SSD does not appear as a target
Check whether the drive appears in firmware, confirm SATA/NVMe controller settings and physical connections, and test the SSD in another system if needed. A RAID controller or unusual storage mode can affect visibility. Do not wipe anything from a rescue shell until you have positively identified the drive.

The Netgate Installer fetches packages online. Check Ethernet link, DHCP or static addressing, DNS, the default route, and Internet reachability from the installation environment. Some PPP-based WAN arrangements have installer limitations; review the documented Netgate Installer requirements and limitations.

pfSense boots but interfaces are wrong
Hardware changes can alter interface names or order. Use the console to reassign interfaces before routing production traffic. During staging, record port labels and MAC addresses to make mapping easier.
Two disks or installations interfere
Disconnect the old disk during testing if possible. Multiple installations can produce boot, root-filesystem, or ZFS-pool conflicts; follow the appliance-specific Netgate procedure where applicable. See the guidance for the 6100 and 4200 NVMe installation. Device numbering in rescue environments can change as drives are detected, so identify disks by more than their device name.
A clone will not boot
Disconnect the source and other bootable disks, confirm the destination SSD is first in boot order, and check UEFI/legacy mode and disk layout. If the hardware or layout differs, a fresh installation followed by configuration restore is usually the clearer recovery path.

SSD capacity and the old overprovisioning tip
The 2013 article suggested limiting a larger SSD’s usable area to increase endurance. Treat that as a historical tip, not a measured guarantee for current drives. Endurance depends on the controller, NAND, firmware, workload, spare area, and TRIM behavior. Merely leaving filesystem or partition space unused is not necessarily equivalent to manufacturer-reserved overprovisioning. Check current pfSense storage requirements for the release and edition you install, and consider logging workload as well as capacity when choosing storage.
