The easiest way to install Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on most WordPress sites is with Google’s official Site Kit plugin. Install Site Kit, connect the Google account that can access your Analytics property, and complete the setup prompts. Then check the GA4 Realtime report to confirm that the site is sending data.

Before you install Google Analytics

Current Google Analytics setup uses a GA4 property, a web data stream for your website, and the Google tag that sends data to that stream. The tag is often identified by a measurement ID beginning with G-. Site Kit can connect or create these as part of its setup. These instructions are for GA4, not the discontinued Universal Analytics setup.

  • Your website should be publicly accessible—not hidden behind a maintenance page, coming-soon screen, password, or other access restriction. Site Kit’s setup guidance is at Install and set up Site Kit.
  • Site Kit requires WordPress 5.2 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, according to its published requirements. Check the current documentation because minimums can change.
  • If setup cannot communicate with Google, check that the WordPress REST API is working in Tools → Site Health.
  • Use a Google account with the necessary access to the Analytics account and property you intend to connect.

Install GA4 with Site Kit by Google

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New. Search for Site Kit by Google, choose Install, and then Activate.
  2. Open Site Kit and start setup. Sign in with the appropriate Google account, then follow the prompts to verify site ownership and grant the requested permissions. Site Kit explains that your WordPress site needs permission to access Google services on your behalf.
  3. When prompted, select the Analytics account and property you want to use. Choose the relevant web data stream or create an Analytics account, property, and stream if needed. Complete the setup flow to connect Analytics to the site.
  4. To connect Analytics later instead, open the Analytics section in Site Kit settings and follow its connection prompts.

Site Kit’s setup can configure the GA4 property, web data stream, and Google tag for you. For Google’s overview of connecting a website to Analytics, see Set up Analytics for a website and/or app.

Check that GA4 is receiving data

  1. Visit your public website in a browser.
  2. In Google Analytics, open the property connected to the site and view the Realtime report. It is the earliest useful check for incoming activity.
  3. If no activity appears immediately, allow up to 30 minutes for data collection to start, then check Realtime again. Confirm that you are viewing the right property and web stream and that the tag is present on the public site.

Site Kit’s own dashboard can take up to 48 hours to populate. An empty Site Kit dashboard during that period does not by itself mean the GA4 tag has failed; use Analytics Realtime for the earlier signal.

When manual tag installation makes more sense

Manual installation is an alternative if you cannot install plugins or intentionally manage site tags another way. In Analytics, open the web data stream’s tag instructions and copy the Google tag snippet. Add it through your established code-management route, such as a suitable custom HTML field or another method your WordPress setup supports. Google’s guidance for platforms without a native tag-ID field is in Set up Analytics for a website and/or app; if you cannot use a plugin, follow its WordPress Editor instructions.

This route can require theme or code familiarity. Avoid editing theme files unless you understand how your site manages code and how updates affect those changes. Google Tag Manager is another option for managing additional tags, but it needs its own configuration; a basic Analytics installation does not set it up for you.

Site Kit, manual installation, or Tag Manager?

Approach Best fit Trade-off
Site Kit Most site owners who want the official, guided WordPress connection. Requires plugin access, a publicly accessible site, supported WordPress and PHP versions, and a working REST API.
Manual Google tag Sites where plugins are unavailable or tags are deliberately managed through an existing code process. Requires a reliable way to add and maintain the tag; mistakes can leave the site untracked or create duplicate measurement.
Google Tag Manager Sites that need to manage additional tags and tracking configurations. Requires separate Tag Manager configuration. It is not a substitute for setting up the GA4 stream and deciding which events to track.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Site Kit setup will not finish

Confirm that the site is publicly accessible and that its REST API is available in Tools → Site Health. Check the documented WordPress and PHP minimums in the Site Kit installation requirements. Also make sure you signed in with a Google account that has access to the intended Analytics property.

Realtime shows no activity

Check that you selected the correct Analytics property and web data stream, that the Google tag is present on the public site, and that collection has had up to 30 minutes to start. If you already had an Analytics plugin or tag installed, inspect it before enabling Site Kit Analytics so you do not add another copy of the same measurement code.

The Site Kit dashboard is empty

Check Analytics Realtime first. Google says collection may take up to 30 minutes to start, while Site Kit says its dashboard can take up to 48 hours to populate. Those are different update timings for different views.

You need custom events or conversions

Installing the base tag does not configure every business-specific event. Site Kit documentation says event tracking is not configured exclusively in Site Kit; it can be configured with GA4 and/or Google Tag Manager. See Site Kit event tracking for the distinction.

You suspect duplicate tracking

Check whether the site already has the same measurement code through a theme, another plugin, or Tag Manager before connecting another implementation. Site Kit describes how its Analytics and Tag Manager modules manage code at Site Kit Analytics; its notes about those modules do not guarantee that every third-party combination avoids duplicate tracking.
