For most Ubuntu users, the quickest route is the verified Eclipse Foundation Snap: run sudo snap install eclipse --classic, then launch it with eclipse. As of August 18, 2026, the Snap Store’s latest/stable channel reports Eclipse 2026-06; its listing was last updated July 24, 2026. Before you install Eclipse
This guide targets Ubuntu Desktop on supported 64-bit Intel/AMD, ARM, or RISC-V hardware. Do not assume every older Ubuntu release or Ubuntu-based distribution has the same support or setup: Snap availability can vary on flavors, minimal images, and managed systems.
Eclipse can include a Java runtime (JRE) to start the IDE, but Java development requires a JDK, which includes the compiler. If you plan to create Java applications, install Ubuntu’s default JDK:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install default-jdkUbuntu documents this JDK installation command at its Java development guide. Java compatibility depends on the Eclipse release, JDK, project settings, and any installed plug-ins; check the requirements for the project you intend to build.

Method 1: Install Eclipse with Snap
Snap is the simplest option for a standard Java setup. Ubuntu’s developer documentation uses this installation method, and the Snap Store listing identifies the publisher as the verified Eclipse Foundation account. The listing is primarily for the Java IDE; choose the Eclipse Installer method if you need a different package.
1. Check that Snap is available
In a terminal, run:
snap --versionIf Ubuntu reports that the command is not found, install Snap support:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapdSnapcraft says Snap is generally included with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and later, but variants and custom installations can differ. After installing snapd, log out and back in or restart so the session picks up the Snap paths. Snapcraft’s Ubuntu installation instructions

2. Install the Eclipse Snap
sudo snap install eclipse --classicThe --classic option is required by the published Eclipse Snap instructions. Classic confinement gives the application broader system access than strict confinement; install this Snap only from the verified Eclipse Foundation publisher. Snap Store — Eclipse
3. Start Eclipse and choose a workspace
Launch from a terminal with:
eclipseYou can also open Ubuntu’s application grid and search for Eclipse. When prompted, choose a workspace directory, such as /home/<username>/eclipse-workspace. A workspace holds Eclipse metadata and settings; it is not necessarily the same folder as your source code. Keep it in a directory your normal user owns, rather than under /root or a system-owned location.

4. Confirm Java is ready
Run these commands in a terminal:
java -version
javac -version
which java
which javacjavac is the Java compiler. If java works but javac is missing, install a JDK rather than relying on a runtime alone. In Eclipse’s Java settings, confirm that a JDK is configured for the project; labels and menu locations can vary by release.
5. Run a small test project
- Create a Java project in Eclipse.
- Create a class with a
public static void main(String[] args)method. - Print a short message, then run the class.
- Check that the expected message appears in Eclipse’s console.
This verifies not only that the IDE opens, but also that a Java project can compile and run.
Method 2: Install Eclipse with the official Eclipse Installer
Use the Installer when you want to select among Eclipse packages, control the installation folder, or avoid Snap-specific integration differences. Download it from Eclipse Downloads or the Eclipse Installer page. The current packages page lists Eclipse IDE 2026-06 R for Linux x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V 64. Eclipse IDE packages
1. Match the download to your machine
Check your architecture before downloading:
dpkg --print-architecture
uname -mamd64orx86_64: choose Linux x86_64.arm64oraarch64: choose Linux AArch64.riscv64: choose Linux RISC-V 64.
Download the Linux installer for that architecture from Eclipse.org. The current Eclipse packages and installer advertise bundled JRE support, so a separate runtime is not normally needed just to start the current official package or installer. A JDK is still needed to develop Java applications.
2. Extract and start the installer
Eclipse’s instructions say to unzip the Linux download before starting it. For example, if the downloaded archive is named eclipse-inst-jre-linux64.zip:

cd eclipse-installer
./eclipse-instThe archive name and extracted folder can differ for AArch64 or RISC-V downloads; substitute the actual filename and directory. If Ubuntu does not have unzip installed, add it with:

3. Select a package and installation folder
In the installer window, select Eclipse IDE for Java Developers for ordinary Java learning and development, then choose an installation directory and install. The installer is a graphical package-selection workflow, not a traditional Ubuntu .deb installation. Launch Eclipse from the installer’s final screen or run the installed Eclipse executable from its installation directory.

Fix common installation and Java problems
snap: command not found
Install snapd using the commands above, then log out and back in or restart before retrying. Some Ubuntu flavors, minimal installations, and managed systems may not enable Snap by default.
Eclipse opens, but Java projects will not compile
Check javac -version. If it fails, install default-jdk. If the compiler exists, check Eclipse’s configured JDK and the project’s required Java level; they may not match.

“No Java virtual machine was found”
First check that the download came from Eclipse.org and that the installer or archive was fully extracted. Current Eclipse 2026-06 packages and installer advertise bundled JRE support. If you installed a different archive-based distribution, install a suitable Java runtime or JDK and check where Java resolves:
readlink -f "$(command -v java)"
java -versionDo not set JAVA_HOME to an assumed path; identify the installed Java location and follow the requirements for your Eclipse build.
The Eclipse download will not run on this computer
Check dpkg --print-architecture and uname -m, then compare them with the Linux architecture selected on Eclipse.org. An x86_64 download is not the right choice for every Ubuntu computer.
Eclipse cannot access a project or mounted drive
Test with a project under your home directory and check ordinary file permissions first. Classic confinement does not override host filesystem permissions, mounted-drive behavior, network-share restrictions, or organizational policies.

You can continue to launch the Snap with eclipse. If you used the Installer, start the executable in its installation directory. Desktop-menu integration may vary by Ubuntu desktop and installation route.

More than one Eclipse installation is present
Check which executable the shell finds and whether the Snap is installed:
which eclipse
snap list eclipseChoose one installation to use consistently. Older manual installations in locations such as /opt or ~/eclipse can coexist with Snap and make it unclear which version a launcher starts.
Update or remove the Snap installation
To request a Snap refresh:
sudo snap refresh eclipseTo remove the Eclipse Snap:
sudo snap remove eclipseThese commands apply to the Snap installation, not an Eclipse installation created with the Eclipse Installer. Keep project files and workspace backups before removing or manually deleting directories; do not assume your development work is stored inside the application installation.
Why older apt install eclipse guides can mislead
Older tutorials may present sudo apt install eclipse as the standard route. It is not the recommended current path: Ubuntu’s current Java setup documentation points to the Eclipse Snap, while Eclipse.org publishes current releases through its own packages and installer. Availability and versions in Ubuntu repositories can differ by release, so do not assume that command provides the current Eclipse release. Ubuntu Java setup · Eclipse packages
