To install CurseForge on a Windows PC, download it from the official CurseForge app page, choose either the standalone or Overwolf version, run the installer, and then add your game. For Minecraft, this guide applies to Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
Before installing CurseForge
You need a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, an internet connection, and permission to download and run software. You should also have the supported game installed if you want CurseForge to manage it.
CurseForge is a desktop app and content platform for finding, installing, updating, and managing mods, addons, and modpacks. It is not the game itself, a replacement for Minecraft ownership, or a universal mod loader.

Choose between the Overwolf and standalone versions

For most beginners who simply want to manage Minecraft mods, the standalone version is the simplest starting point. Choose the Overwolf version if you specifically need its features or your game workflow requires it. The official page describes standalone as lightweight and the Overwolf edition as providing in-game features; it does not establish exact performance or memory differences.
Download CurseForge from the official website
- Open curseforge.com/download/app.
- Check that the domain is curseforge.com.
- Choose Download standalone or Download on Overwolf for Windows.
Avoid download mirrors, bundled installers, cracked copies, and search advertisements that imitate the CurseForge brand. Installer names and button labels can change, so follow the current wording shown on the official page.
Install CurseForge on Windows
- Open the downloaded installer from your browser’s download list or the Windows Downloads folder.
- Approve the Windows security or User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Follow the installer’s instructions and allow installation to finish.
- Launch CurseForge from the installer’s final screen or the Windows Start menu.
The exact filename, installation folder, consent screens, and button names may vary between releases. You do not need CurseForge Premium to install the app or manage ordinary mods.
Set up your game
On first launch, CurseForge may ask you to select a game, locate an existing installation, or choose a modding directory. Supported games are normally detected automatically.
If your game is missing:
- Open CurseForge settings.
- Click the + button.
- Choose Scan computer for games, or select Manually add a game.
- For manual setup, browse to the game’s installation directory and select its main folder.
The standalone edition supports fewer Windows games than the Overwolf edition. If a game is not listed, check the current supported-game list or consider the other CurseForge version.
Set up Minecraft Java Edition
CurseForge’s Minecraft modding workflow is for Minecraft Java Edition. Java mods and loaders such as Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt do not work in Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
- Select Minecraft in CurseForge.
- Choose the standard setup unless you have a specific reason to customize it.
- Use the default Windows modding location:
C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraftCurseForge creates a separate modding environment and dedicated game installation for its profiles, so Minecraft does not necessarily have to be installed before you configure the folder. You still need valid Minecraft game access and a Microsoft account to play and authenticate.

When creating a profile, select the Minecraft version and an appropriate loader:
- Forge
- Fabric
- NeoForge
- Quilt
- Vanilla, for the unmodded game
A mod must match both the Minecraft version and the profile’s mod loader. Keep separate profiles for different versions, loaders, modpacks, and experimental mod collections. This prevents conflicts and makes it easier to remove or repair one setup without affecting another.
Install your first modpack
The easiest method is to install a pack from inside CurseForge:
- Open Browse.
- Select Modpacks from the content-type menu.
- Filter by Minecraft version, loader, category, or other available options.
- Open the modpack you want.
- Click Install.
- Wait for the installation to complete.
- Open the finished pack under My Modpacks.
Before installing, check the pack’s Minecraft version and loader. A pack built for one version may not work with another, and not every loader supports every mod.
Install an individual mod
To add a mod to a new profile, search for the mod and select Install. CurseForge can detect a compatible Minecraft version and loader, after which you can name and create the profile.
To add a mod to an existing profile, open that profile and use its content-management controls to search for and install compatible content. Do not place a Forge mod in a Fabric profile, or install a mod built for a different Minecraft version.
Install from the CurseForge website
- Open the mod or modpack on the official CurseForge website.
- Click Install.
- Choose Open when the browser asks to open CurseForge.
- Allow the app to complete the installation.
Some creators host projects elsewhere, so a mod or addon will not necessarily appear in the CurseForge app or repository.

Launch the profile or modpack
Authenticate with the Microsoft account that owns or has access to Minecraft. CurseForge supports launching through the classic/Mojang launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, or its own launcher workflow.

The installer will not launch
- Download the installer again from the official page.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined or removed it.
- Try downloading with a normal web browser rather than a download manager.
- If you selected Overwolf, use the official Overwolf troubleshooter.
- If the problem continues, contact CurseForge or Overwolf support with the relevant logs.
Antivirus or firewall blocks CurseForge
Security software can prevent CurseForge or Overwolf from connecting to their servers. Allow the legitimate app through the relevant firewall or antivirus controls, but do not permanently disable antivirus protection.
“Missing required disk permissions for installation”
Open the app menu and choose Repair folder permissions. Make sure your Windows account can read, write, and modify the selected folder.
“Failed to create Minecraft directories” or “Access violation”
The selected location may be protected or unavailable. Avoid the Desktop, OneDrive folders, the normal vanilla .minecraft directory, drive roots such as C:, and paths containing unusual or special characters. In Advanced setup, try a simple folder such as:

“Failed to download file” or “Error Code 0”
Use Repair Installation from the relevant profile or modpack menu. Also check your network connection and confirm that firewall or antivirus software is not blocking downloads.

A modpack will not launch
- Open the modpack menu and choose Repair installation.
- Try launching again.
- If it still fails, switch from Use CurseForge launcher to the Mojang or Microsoft launcher.
- Retry the launch.
Java, permissions, authentication, a damaged installation, and incompatible mods can all cause launch failures. Do not assume every error is a Java problem.
“Play Demo” appears instead of “Play”
This generally indicates a Minecraft account-login problem. Log out, sign in again, and verify that you are using the Microsoft account with Minecraft access.

A mod or addon is missing
The project may still be pending moderation, may be hosted by its creator elsewhere, may belong to another game instance, or may not support your selected Minecraft version or loader.
Black screen, flickering, or visual glitches
Try disabling hardware acceleration. In the Overwolf edition, use Overwolf’s General settings. For standalone CurseForge, the documented advanced shortcut argument is:
--disableHardwareAccelerationThis is a troubleshooting step, not a normal installation requirement.
Is CurseForge Premium required?
No. The basic app and ordinary mod-management workflow are available without Premium. As displayed on August 18, 2026, the optional Premium plan was listed at $2.99 per month or $30 per year, shown as $2.50 per month when billed annually. Advertised benefits included an ad-free experience, instant downloads, premium themes, and enhanced author support. Prices and benefits can change; Premium is not required to install CurseForge, create profiles, or manage standard mods.
When another launcher may be better
Use another tool if CurseForge does not support your game, your project is hosted elsewhere, or you need more control over Minecraft instances.
- Modrinth App is an open-source launcher for mods and modpacks in the Modrinth ecosystem, with Windows, Mac, and Linux downloads.
- Prism Launcher is an open-source Minecraft launcher focused on separate instances, accounts, and detailed control. It can interface with both Modrinth and CurseForge content.
Minecraft Bedrock users should look for Bedrock-compatible add-ons rather than attempting to install Java loaders through CurseForge.
Uninstalling CurseForge
Close CurseForge and uninstall the app through Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Select CurseForge, or Overwolf if you installed that edition, and choose Uninstall. Removing the app may not remove your modding profiles and downloaded content, so back up or delete the CurseForge Minecraft folder separately only if you no longer need it.
