For most Ubuntu users, install Audacity from Ubuntu’s repositories:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install audacity
This is the easiest, best-integrated option. It may not be the newest release, however. Ubuntu’s package listings show Audacity 2.4.2 on Ubuntu 22.04, 3.4.2 on 24.04, 3.7.5 on 25.10, and 3.7.7 on 26.04 when checked; Audacity’s Linux download page listed version 3.7.8 on August 18, 2026. See Ubuntu’s package listing and Audacity’s Linux downloads.
Choose an installation method
| Method | Best for | Advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| APT | Most users | Ubuntu integration, normal updates and removal | Version depends on your Ubuntu release and may be older |
| Official AppImage | Users wanting the newest official Linux build | Single official executable; no system package installation | Manual updates; may require FUSE 2 |
| Snap | Existing Snap users | Simple installation and automatic updates | Sandboxing and Snap-specific permissions |
| Flatpak | Existing Flatpak/Flathub users | Isolation and a current package | Setup required; Flathub package is community-provided and unverified |
Ubuntu flavors such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Ubuntu MATE generally use the same commands. Linux Mint, Pop!_OS and other Ubuntu-based systems can have different repositories and software defaults.
Method 1: Install Audacity with APT
Terminal installation
- Refresh package information and install Audacity:
sudo apt update sudo apt install audacity - Launch it from the Applications grid, or run
audacityin a terminal.
Audacity is supplied in Ubuntu’s universe repository. If you prefer the graphical route, open App Center, search for Audacity, select the package, click Install and authenticate. App Center can show both Snap and Debian packages, so check the format shown before installing; Ubuntu documents this workflow at its App Center guide.

Check, update or remove the APT package
apt policy audacity
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install --only-upgrade audacity
sudo apt remove audacity
sudo apt autoremove
apt policy shows the installed version and the repository candidate. Updates are limited to the version available for your Ubuntu release and enabled repositories. remove leaves configuration files, which can be useful when troubleshooting or reinstalling.
Method 2: Install Audacity’s official AppImage
Use the AppImage when you specifically want the current official Linux release rather than Ubuntu’s repository build. Audacity says its Linux download is a 64-bit AppImage, tested on Ubuntu 22.04 and requiring FUSE 2; the download page labels files for Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04. Compatibility is not a promise of identical behavior on every architecture, flavor or derivative.
- Download the appropriate file from Audacity’s Linux download page and save it in
Downloads. - Make it executable and run it:
cd ~/Downloads chmod +x ./*.AppImage ./Audacity*.AppImage
An AppImage is downloaded and made executable; it is not registered in Ubuntu’s package database. Keep it in a permanent folder such as ~/Applications if you want a stable location. It may not create an Applications-menu entry automatically. Double-clicking works after execution permission is enabled; alternatively use the file manager’s Properties → Permissions panel.

If the AppImage will not start
If the terminal reports a FUSE error, investigate the package named libfuse2 for your Ubuntu release:

Package names and availability differ on newer releases, so do not install it pre-emptively or assume this command applies everywhere. The AppImage overview at AppImage.org explains the executable-file behavior. Audacity’s page provides SHA-256 checksums; verify the downloaded file against the published checksum when security or production use matters. AppImage updates are manual: download a newer file and replace the old one.
Method 3: Install Audacity with Snap
Ubuntu 16.04 and later normally include Snap support. If the snap command is missing:

MP3, M4A and FFmpeg support
Test the format you actually need before installing extra codecs. Ubuntu repository builds may already provide MP3 and FFmpeg support through system libraries, while AppImage, Snap and Flatpak builds can differ. Audacity’s manual explains that LAME enables MP3 encoding and FFmpeg adds formats such as M4A/AAC, AC3, WMA and many video-derived audio files: Linux installation and updating.
- Check Help → About Audacity for the installed version.
- If present, inspect Edit → Preferences → Libraries.
- Try importing or exporting the required format.
- Only follow Audacity’s missing-library instructions if an error appears; do not download random codec files.
Fix common installation problems
“Unable to locate package audacity”
Refresh lists and retry:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install audacity
If it still fails, check whether universe is enabled, whether the release is supported and whether repository configuration is healthy. Do not substitute an unverified random .deb.
Audacity opens but cannot record
- Confirm the microphone is selected in Audacity and Ubuntu sound settings.
- Check cable, mute state and hardware permissions.
- Close applications that may hold the device.
- Consider Snap or Flatpak device restrictions.
- Test whether a virtual machine, remote session, container or Chromebook Linux environment is limiting audio access.
MP3 export or M4A/video import fails
Check the installed build’s library support first. MP3 needs LAME support; broader formats may need FFmpeg. Follow the instructions for your package rather than installing libraries blindly.
The wrong version or duplicate launcher appears
Installing APT, Snap, Flatpak and an AppImage can create separate versions with different permissions, update systems, configuration locations and plugin visibility. Identify them with:
