On a Chromebook that supports Android apps, install them through Google Play: update ChromeOS, open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences, accept the terms, then install the app from the Play Store. Not every Chromebook, account, or Android app is eligible, so check compatibility before troubleshooting.
First, check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
Select the time in the lower-right corner, open Settings, and look under Apps for Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is present, the Chromebook can normally use the Play Store. If it is absent, Google says the model may not support Android apps, or a school or work administrator may have disabled them. See Google’s compatibility guidance at Google Chromebook Help.
Google’s enterprise documentation says Chromebooks launched after 2019 support Android apps, while older models require a supported-device check. This is not a guarantee that every app will work: hardware, Android version, screen size, region and developer policies still apply. On eligible pre-2021 devices, opting into ChromeOS extended updates can remove Play Store and Android-app support permanently; review Google’s extended-updates guidance first.
Enable Google Play
- Update ChromeOS: select the time, then Settings → About ChromeOS → Check for updates (labels can vary slightly by release).
- Return to Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences.
- Select More.
- Accept the Google Play Terms of Service and follow the prompts.
If the menu is arranged differently, search Settings for Google Play. You need internet access, a Google Account that can use Play, available local storage and permission to install apps on a managed device.

Install an Android app
- Open the Launcher and select Play Store.
- Search for the app and open its listing.
- Select Install.
- After installation, open it from the Launcher.
Android apps are installed separately on the Chromebook; an app on your phone does not automatically appear here. Google initially makes the Play Store and downloaded apps available to the account that first enabled Google Play. To use another account, sign out and sign back in with that account, as described by Google.
Know what kind of app you are installing
- Android app: downloaded from Google Play and run in ChromeOS’s Android environment.
- Web app: opened in Chrome, sometimes installable as a progressive web app.
- Chrome extension: added through the Chrome Web Store.
- Linux app: installed through the Linux development environment.
These are different installation systems. If an Android app is unavailable, its official web app may be the better Chromebook option.

Adjust the app’s layout and permissions
Resize a newly downloaded app
Open the app, select the Down arrow at the top, and choose Tablet, Phone or Resizable. Google notes that this control is available for new apps downloaded through the current system. Some apps remain phone-shaped or do not support resizing.
Expect different hardware behavior
An app may assume a touchscreen, stylus, phone rotation, GPS, camera, Bluetooth or particular memory and resolution. Mouse, keyboard and trackpad control can work, but the developer decides which inputs and features are supported. Offline use also varies by app.

Review permissions and storage
Android apps use local Chromebook storage and may save files locally rather than in the cloud. Review requested access to files, location, Bluetooth-related functions and other device capabilities in the Google Play or Android preferences area; labels vary by ChromeOS release. If you later turn off Google Play, Google says Android app data and settings are removed, so back up important app-local files first.
When an app is missing or will not install
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Play Store is missing | Unsupported model, administrator policy or an extended-update choice | Check Chromebook support, ChromeOS status and school/work policy; do not try to bypass management. |
| Play Store will not open | Network, software, account or service problem | Restart, check the connection, update ChromeOS, then use Google’s Play Store troubleshooting. |
| App does not appear in search | Developer exclusion, region, Android-version, screen-size or hardware restriction | Check the app’s official website for a web version or contact its developer. Google explains filtering at Google Play compatibility help. |
| “Your device isn’t compatible with this version” | The Chromebook lacks a supported configuration or required feature, such as GPS | Update ChromeOS, restart and verify the requirement. Treat the message as a compatibility limit, not just a failed download; see Google’s troubleshooting steps. |
| Installation stalls | Connection, storage or account issue | Check free space and internet access, restart, and try again. |
| App installs but is awkward to use | Phone layout, missing touchscreen or unsupported hardware | Try Tablet or Resizable mode, review permissions, or use the web version. |

Managed Chromebooks
An administrator can disable Google Play, show only approved apps, require approval or prevent Linux and ADB features. Google advises contacting the administrator rather than attempting to circumvent policy. Administrators can approve, force-install, restrict or remove Android apps and should test deployments on a small group first. See Chrome Enterprise guidance and Google’s managed-Chromebook help.

Child accounts with Family Link
On a supervised personal account, the child opens Play Store, selects an app and chooses Ask in a message or Ask in person. The parent approves in Family Link or enters the parent password. Google’s instructions require ChromeOS 83 or later on the child’s Chromebook: Family Link app approvals.

Sideloading is not the normal consumer route and is not guaranteed on every Chromebook. Availability depends on ChromeOS version, Android-app support, Linux and administrator policy. Use a web app or another device first when possible, and never obtain APKs from untrusted mirrors.

Google’s documented ADB setup is for development and testing:
- Set up Linux.
- Confirm that Android apps are supported.
- Open Settings → Advanced → Developers.
- Under Linux, select Develop Android apps.
- Turn on Enable ADB debugging.
- Restart and confirm the prompts.
Google does not document one universal consumer APK-installation workflow on that page, so do not assume a command such as adb install app.apk will work on your release. While ADB is enabled it is available to all accounts on the Chromebook; turning it off requires a Powerwash, which erases stored data. Read Google’s ADB documentation before proceeding.
