The basic command is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS] <input> <output>. Install a release that matches your operating system and CPU architecture, verify it with --version, then capture a page by supplying its URL or file path and an output filename such as .png, .jpg, or .webp.
What wkhtmltoimage does
wkhtmltoimage renders HTML in a headless process, so it does not need an X server or other display service. It accepts either a web address or an HTML file. The output extension selects the image format, although the formats available can vary between builds; confirm yours with the installed binary’s help.
The renderer is based on Qt WebKit. That gives it a predictable, old browser environment, but it also means modern JavaScript, CSS, and browser APIs may not behave like they do in current Chromium or Firefox.

The wkhtmltopdf project’s downloads page identifies version 0.12.6 as its stable series, released June 11, 2020. Its published assets include a Windows installer/archive, a macOS installer, and Debian 11 packages for amd64, i386, arm64, ppc64el, and Raspberry Pi. Those listings are historical guidance rather than a compatibility guarantee: verify that the asset still exists and matches your operating system, distribution release, and CPU architecture.

The project’s GitHub repository was archived on January 2, 2023 and is read-only. A deployment that needs actively patched browser-engine security updates should weigh that maintenance status before standardizing on wkhtmltoimage.
Download the matching asset
- Open the project’s current release/download page.
- Identify your operating system and architecture (for example, Windows 64-bit, macOS, or Debian Linux arm64).
- Download the corresponding installer or archive.
- Read the package notes and install any dependencies it lists. Do not assume a package-manager command from another distribution will apply to yours.
- Place the executable in a directory on your
PATH, or call it with its full path.

Capture a local document
wkhtmltoimage ./page.html page.pngRelative paths are resolved from the directory where you run the command. Use an absolute path when a scheduled job or service may have a different working directory.

Options that matter in production
Viewport width
wkhtmltoimage --width 1440 --disable-smart-width https://example.com desktop.png--width <int> sets the screen width. The manual describes it as a guideline; --disable-smart-width makes the width strict. A fixed width helps when responsive layouts must be reproducible.
Image quality
wkhtmltoimage --quality 85 https://example.com page.jpg--quality <int> accepts a value from 0 to 100. It is most relevant to lossy formats such as JPEG. Check the installed help for format-specific behavior.
Wait for JavaScript
wkhtmltoimage --javascript-delay 1500 https://example.com rendered.png--javascript-delay <msec> waits before rendering; the Debian manual documents a default of 200 milliseconds. Increase it for charts, client-rendered content, or lazy components, but avoid using a large fixed delay when a deterministic readiness signal is available.
Wait for a page status
wkhtmltoimage --window-status ready https://example.com status.png--window-status <value> waits until the page’s window.status equals the supplied value. Your page must set that value from its own JavaScript, for example window.status = 'ready' after data and fonts have loaded.
Handle load failures deliberately
wkhtmltoimage --load-error-handling ignore https://example.com result.png--load-error-handling supports documented values including abort, ignore, and skip. Choose based on your pipeline: abort is safer when an incomplete image is unusable; ignore can preserve a partial capture for diagnostics.

Control local-file access
wkhtmltoimage --disable-local-file-access ./page.html page.png
wkhtmltoimage --disable-local-file-access --allow /srv/site/assets ./page.html page.png--disable-local-file-access prevents a local input page from reading other local files unless a path is explicitly allowed with --allow <path>. This is an important boundary when HTML can reference files outside its intended directory.
Plugins
--disable-plugins is the documented default. The manual says enabled plugins are likely not to work, so do not design a capture workflow around browser plugins.
Reliable capture procedure
- Start with a local, minimal HTML file to prove that the binary launches.
- Run
wkhtmltoimage --versionand record the version in deployment logs. - Set an explicit width and, when needed, disable smart width.
- For dynamic pages, prefer
--window-status; otherwise choose the shortest delay that consistently includes the content. - Use a format and quality appropriate to the destination. PNG preserves sharp text; JPEG is smaller for photographic content.
- Check the process exit status and verify that the output file exists and has a non-zero size.
- Keep the exact command and build information so another machine can reproduce the result.
Security and isolation
The project’s downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The warning names wkhtmltopdf, but it is a project-level warning about this tool family and its embedded browser engine. Treat untrusted HTML, CSS, JavaScript, URLs, and local files as hostile input.
- Sanitize user-supplied markup and scripts before rendering.
- Run the renderer in a restricted container or separate low-privilege account.
- Block unnecessary outbound network access and protect cloud metadata endpoints.
- Use
--disable-local-file-accessand narrowly scoped--allowpaths. - Do not place secrets in environment variables or files that the rendered page can read.
The project status documentation discusses WebKit1 security concerns and maintenance limitations. Because the repository is archived and the stable series dates from 2020, wkhtmltoimage is a poor fit for processing arbitrary internet content without strong isolation.
Troubleshooting
“Command not found”
The executable is not on PATH. Run it by absolute path, then add its installation directory to the service user’s PATH. Confirm executable permissions on Unix-like systems.

The output is blank or incomplete
Test the URL in a browser, then capture a local static file. If only dynamic pages fail, increase --javascript-delay or implement a window.status readiness signal. Check redirects, TLS errors, blocked resources, and JavaScript console assumptions; this engine is older than current browser engines.

Images or styles are missing from a local file
Local-file restrictions or incorrect relative paths are common causes. Use absolute asset paths, run from the expected directory, or allow only the required asset directory with --allow. Do not disable the restriction globally for untrusted input.
The layout changes between machines
Compare binary versions, operating-system packages, fonts, architecture, viewport width, and smart-width behavior. Builds may include different Qt patches, and missing fonts can change line wrapping and image dimensions.
The command hangs
A page may be waiting on network resources or JavaScript. Try a local static page, use a bounded delay rather than an indefinitely waiting status condition, and inspect the page for requests that never complete. Run the process under an external job timeout in production.
Unsupported option or format
Option availability is build-dependent. Read wkhtmltoimage --extended-help and the installed manpage instead of copying flags from another package.

- Local binary: no per-capture service charge, but you own installation, fonts, process limits, isolation, upgrades, and debugging.
- Rendering speed: static local HTML is usually simpler than a remote, JavaScript-heavy page; network waits and fixed delays directly increase runtime.
- Reproducibility: pin the executable build, OS image, fonts, viewport, flags, and input assets.
