“Ubecart” is usually a misspelling of Ubercart, an e-commerce module suite for Drupal. The practical installation path documented most fully is for Drupal 7—but Drupal 7 reached end of life on January 5, 2025, and the Ubercart project currently lists no supported stable releases. Treat this as a guide to maintaining or testing a legacy store, not a recommendation to launch a new public store on Drupal 7 in 2026.
Before following the steps, check your Drupal version. If you run modern Drupal, stop: the old Ubercart branches are not a current supported installation path.
What Ubercart is—and whether it fits your Drupal site
Ubercart is a collection of Drupal modules for product catalogs, carts, orders, store administration, and optional payment and fulfillment integrations. It is not a standalone application. Drupal must already be installed and working before you add Ubercart. The Ubercart project page lists features and integrations, but currently describes the project as minimally maintained, with no supported stable releases and no further development by its maintainers.
Drupal 7 reached end of life on January 5, 2025. Drupal.org no longer provides normal community security support or new Drupal 7 releases; see the Drupal 7 end-of-life announcement and security advisory. The Drupal.org Ubercart page also lists an old Drupal 8 8.x-4.0-alpha5 release, originally released in 2016, not a current solution for modern Drupal.

- Existing Drupal 7 store: An installation or maintenance may be necessary, but requires a deliberate security and support plan.
- New public store: Do not treat Ubercart on Drupal 7 as a current, supported option.
- Modern Drupal: Evaluate a currently maintained commerce solution and verify its present release and payment ecosystem rather than assuming Ubercart compatibility.
Drupal core supplies the underlying site; Ubercart core modules provide store functions; contributed payment modules connect payment methods to gateways; and shipping or fulfillment modules add delivery-specific functions. Third-party modules have their own compatibility and maintenance status, so an integration listed for Ubercart is not proof that it still works with a particular gateway or carrier.
Check your Drupal version before installing
On a site with Drush, run:
drush status
On Drupal 7, you can also check the version shown in the administration reports or inspect the site’s CHANGELOG.txt. The historical Ubercart installation instructions cover Drupal 7. Do not apply those module paths to Drupal 8 or newer.
The project’s Composer command for its old Drupal 8 alpha branch is:
composer require 'drupal/ubercart:^4.0@alpha'
This is historical or experimental information only: the branch is an old alpha, and the project page says there are no supported stable releases. Do not force it into a modern or production site.

Prepare a safe Drupal 7 test environment
Install or upgrade nothing on a live store until the same procedure has succeeded on a staging or local copy. A module installation may change database schema or leave modules partly enabled if it fails.
- Back up the database and the full Drupal codebase.
- Back up
sites/default/files,settings.php, any private files directory, custom modules, themes, and patches. - Save configuration exports if the site uses configuration management, and document a rollback plan.
- Confirm that the PHP and database versions match the requirements of the exact Drupal 7 site and module releases. Ubercart’s historical installation introduction recommends at least 64 MB PHP memory; that is a historical recommendation, not a universal modern hosting specification. It lists additional requirements for some optional modules, including OpenSSL for the UPS module and cURL for several payment modules. See the Ubercart installation introduction.
- Use HTTPS for the storefront and administration area. Have working credentials for any payment, shipping, tax, or email services you intend to configure.
- Decide whether the copy is for development, private legacy maintenance, or public production. A public store needs an explicit Drupal 7 security and support arrangement.
If you are building a legacy test site from scratch, install Drupal 7 first: prepare the web server and database, complete the Drupal installation script, then configure the site name, administrator, files directory, clean URLs, cron, and email. Drupal’s historical Drupal 7 installation guide covers database setup, settings.php, the files directory, and the installer.

Install the Drupal 7 dependencies
The Drupal 7 Ubercart documentation identifies these dependencies: Rules, Views, Chaos Tool Suite (CTools), Entity API, and Entity Tokens. Install releases compatible with Drupal 7 and with one another; do not assume the latest release of each project is suitable for a legacy site. Follow the Ubercart dependency instructions. Colorbox, Google Analytics, and Token are listed as recommended rather than universally required.
Confirm that each dependency appears in Drupal’s module administration page and is enabled before enabling Ubercart modules. Missing or disabled dependencies are a common reason the Ubercart modules cannot be selected.

Place the compatible package in the Drupal 7 modules directory
- Download the Ubercart package compatible with Drupal 7 and extract it.
- Upload the resulting
ubercartdirectory intosites/all/modules/. Avoid a nested path such assites/all/modules/ubercart/ubercart. - Open the Drupal module administration page. The historical path is Administer → Site building → Modules; labels may differ by administration theme.
- Enable the dependencies first, then enable Ubercart’s four core modules in a controlled sequence.
Enable the four core modules
| Module | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Cart | Shopping-cart functionality. |
| Order | Order creation and administration. |
| Product | Product content and behavior. |
| Store | Store-wide settings and administration. |
The required core Ubercart module instructions identify these four. Add other Ubercart modules only when the store needs them, after checking each module’s dependencies and compatibility.
Verify the installation
- Run database updates if Drupal requests them, then clear Drupal caches.
- Check the Drupal status report and watchdog/database log for errors.
- Confirm that product creation is available and that a Store administration link or area appears. Toolbar labels vary by theme.
- Confirm that the cart block or link can be placed in the active theme, and verify the intended anonymous-checkout behavior.
- Send a test email and confirm delivery.
A hosting-provider walkthrough also describes the Store administration link as an expected result after enabling the relevant modules: Installing Ubercart for Drupal.
Configure store identity, access, and operations
Set store details and locale
Enter the store name, physical or business address, contact and notification email addresses, country, default currency, number and date formats, and weight and dimensional units. Decide how order numbers should behave. Currency is not tax configuration: choosing a currency does not calculate, collect, or remit taxes.
Review user roles and permissions
Decide which administrators, store managers, order processors, product editors, and fulfillment staff can create products, change prices, see customer addresses, alter order status, configure payment, or process refunds. Give ordinary content editors only the access they need. Check separately whether anonymous visitors may add products to a cart and whether anonymous checkout is enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
Check email and scheduled tasks
Set customer and administrator notification recipients and test order, payment, shipping, cancellation, refund, and account messages as applicable. Configure and test Drupal cron: scheduled tasks, cleanup, notifications, or integrations may depend on it. Monitor delivery rather than assuming that a completed checkout screen means an email was sent.
Create a test product and catalog
Create one test item before importing a catalog. Set its title, SKU, price, product type or class, description, image, stock quantity, tax behavior, and shipping eligibility. Add attributes or downloadable access only if the store needs them. Ubercart advertises product classes, attributes, images, stock tracking, and downloadable files on its project page; the behavior of a particular feature still depends on the modules and release installed.
Set up product categories, catalog pages, category navigation, product listings, catalog blocks, search behavior, URL patterns, and breadcrumbs. A product page and a product’s placement in the catalog are separate: a product can exist without appearing in the intended category navigation if taxonomy or menu configuration is incomplete.
Configure the cart and checkout
Cart behavior
Place the cart block or link where customers can find it. Review quantity editing, removal, empty-cart behavior, cart expiry, continued shopping, display of fees or price adjustments, and when stock is checked. Test adding one item, changing its quantity, removing it, and combining two products. Leave and return, then repeat while logged in and logged out to confirm persistence and cart-merging behavior.
Checkout behavior
Configure checkout panes and decide which billing and shipping fields are required, whether customers can create accounts, whether guest checkout is allowed, and how terms, order review, completion, and order-status transitions work. Test both an anonymous browser session and a registered customer account. Also test an invalid address and a missing required field; successful administrator checkout alone does not establish that customer permissions and validation work.
Set up payment methods and gateways
Ubercart distinguishes a payment method—how the customer pays, such as by check, purchase order, or card—from a gateway, the integration that connects a method to a processor. Its payment documentation covers settings, payment ledgers, methods, and gateway-specific configuration: Ubercart payment settings.
Rank #4
Ubercart’s project documentation lists integrations or module support involving PayPal, Authorize.Net, and CyberSource, among other methods. This does not establish that a specific module, API, or account flow remains available for your release. Verify the exact module, processor API, supported currencies, and callback requirements before configuring it.
- Enable only payment methods the business actually accepts, and install the matching gateway module if needed.
- Enter credentials for the correct environment. Use sandbox or test credentials where available; keep secrets out of public logs and configuration exports.
- Check the required callback or notification URL, HTTPS, currency compatibility, and whether the integration authorizes, captures, refunds, or redirects to a processor.
- Determine how declined or interrupted payments affect order status, then complete a test transaction.
- Compare the Ubercart order record and transaction identifier with the processor dashboard before treating an order as paid.
Do not describe an Ubercart integration as automatically PCI-compliant. The merchant’s payment architecture and compliance obligations depend on how the site and processor are implemented.

Configure shipping and tax rules
Shipping and fulfillment
Use only the shipping modules the store needs. Ubercart documentation lists UPS, FedEx, USPS, and flat-rate options, but current availability depends on the particular legacy module, carrier API, credentials, and account. Set the origin address, allowed destination regions, product weights and dimensions, services, flat-rate or free-shipping rules, handling fees, and residential-versus-commercial assumptions. Mark downloadable products appropriately so they do not receive an unintended shipping charge.
Check whether shipping is calculated before or after tax and set a fallback method for carrier-service outages. Missing quotes can result from absent weight or dimensions, an incomplete origin or destination, invalid credentials, unsupported service levels, carrier API changes, or missing server requirements. Ubercart’s historical requirements identify OpenSSL for its UPS module and cURL for several payment modules; check requirements for the exact integration you use.
Taxes
Configure the relevant jurisdictions, rates, tax names, whether catalog prices include or exclude tax, product taxability, shipping taxability, the address used to determine tax, rounding, and how tax lines appear to customers. Tax obligations and rates depend on the store’s circumstances and jurisdiction; have a qualified professional review the setup. Ubercart does not determine the merchant’s legal tax obligations automatically.

Best Value
- Product: Check catalog placement, SKU, price, image, stock behavior, and any attribute combinations.
- Cart: Add, update, and remove products; verify quantities, line totals, discounts, fees, and persistence.
- Checkout: Test guest and registered customers, invalid addresses, missing fields, a taxable order, a non-taxable order, a shippable product, and a download-only product where relevant.
- Payment: Test a declined or failed payment and a successful payment. Confirm the processor dashboard, transaction ID, order status, and any callback or webhook.
- Order workflow: Confirm that one order is created, the expected customer and administrator emails arrive, fulfillment can proceed, and cancellation or refund records correctly.
- Operations: Obtain a carrier quote where applicable, confirm cron runs, and inspect logs for errors or exposed credentials.
Troubleshoot common problems
Ubercart modules do not appear
Check for an incorrect modules path, a nested extraction directory, an incomplete upload, file-permission problems, an incompatible release, or stale cached module data. Confirm that the directory contains the module’s .info files, is inside the active modules path, and matches Drupal 7. Clear caches and check the status report. Restore the backup if installation caused unexpected database changes.
A module cannot be enabled
Look for missing or disabled dependencies, incompatible dependency releases, a missing PHP extension, or a module-version conflict. In particular, verify Rules, Views, CTools, Entity API, and Entity Tokens. The hosting installation guide notes that disabled or missing CTools, Entity, Rules, and Views dependencies can prevent Ubercart modules from being selected.
Composer installation fails
A failure may indicate that the old alpha branch does not fit the site’s Drupal or PHP version, dependencies conflict, package metadata is unsupported, or the project uses a different Composer layout. Do not force-install it on a production site. Verify declared compatibility on a disposable test site or choose a maintained alternative.
Payment succeeds but the order remains pending
Check callback or webhook delivery, the configured URL, HTTPS certificate, firewall rules, API credentials, sandbox-versus-live settings, currency, integration logs, and any queue or cron processing. Verify the transaction in the processor’s dashboard before changing the order to paid.
A shipping quote is missing
Check product weight and dimensions, origin and destination, credentials, carrier service availability, product shipping status, and server requirements such as cURL or OpenSSL where the integration calls for them.
Checkout works for administrators but not customers
Review role permissions, anonymous-user access, required fields, cart-block visibility, theme overrides, access-control modules, caching, sessions and cookies, and HTTPS or mixed-content errors. Retest in a clean browser session.
Should you use Ubercart in 2026?
For a new public store, generally no: Drupal 7 has passed end of life, and Ubercart has no current supported stable release. The risks are especially consequential if the business needs current payment, tax, shipping, or subscription integrations, modern PHP compatibility, or active Drupal core support.
For an existing store, temporary maintenance may be defensible if replacing it immediately would disrupt a critical business, custom integrations need time to replace, and the organization has a documented security/support arrangement, isolated and monitored infrastructure, tested backups, and a migration schedule. Drupal’s Drupal 7 roadmap provides release and support-cycle context; paid extended support is not the same as normal community support.
