In Google Docs on a computer, choose Insert → Symbols → Special characters, search for degree, then click °. Need it just once? Copy this: °.
Insert the degree symbol in Google Docs on a computer
- Place the cursor where you want the symbol.
- Open Insert → Symbols → Special characters.
- In the search box, type degree.
- Click ° in the results to insert it.
If a word search does not show the character you expect, search for its Unicode value, 00B0. Google Docs also lets you find special characters by category or by drawing them. See Google’s instructions for inserting special characters. Older tutorials may say Insert → Special characters; the current path places the option inside the Symbols submenu.
Copy and paste °
For a one-time insertion, copying the symbol is often quickest: °. Examples include 25°C, 90°, and 40° N, 74° W. The picker is useful when you want to find the character without leaving Docs or verify that you have the actual degree sign.
Keyboard shortcuts: Windows, Mac, and Chromebook
Google Docs does not list a dedicated, universal degree-symbol shortcut. Shortcuts supplied by your operating system or keyboard can be quicker, but they depend on your device and keyboard layout. If one fails, use the Docs picker above.

Windows
A common Windows method is to hold Alt, type 0176 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt. It may not work if you type the digits on the number row above the letters. A physical or embedded numeric keypad, Num Lock, and keyboard settings can affect the result. This is a Windows input method, not a Google Docs command.
Mac
On a U.S. keyboard layout, Option + Shift + 8 commonly types °. Other layouts may assign it differently. If it does not work, use the Docs picker or macOS Character Viewer.

ChromeOS
Use Insert → Symbols → Special characters and search for degree or 00B0. ChromeOS input methods vary, so do not rely on a Unicode keyboard sequence as a guaranteed Docs shortcut.

Google Docs’ Tool finder can help locate commands: press Alt + / on Windows or ChromeOS, or Option + / on Mac, then search for “special characters.” Google notes that shortcuts may vary by language or keyboard; see its Docs keyboard-shortcut reference.

Insert ° on a phone or tablet
The Special characters menu instructions from Google are for Docs on a computer; the mobile apps may not show the same menu path. On either Android or iPhone/iPad, try the keyboard’s number-and-symbol view and press and hold 0, then choose ° if it appears. Availability depends on keyboard app, language, and settings. If it is missing, copy ° from here or insert it in another app and paste it into Docs. For frequent use, a keyboard text replacement or personal dictionary shortcut can save time.
Use the degree sign in an equation
For ordinary text such as a temperature, use the special-character picker so the symbol remains regular document text. If the degree sign belongs in a larger mathematical expression, use Insert → Symbols → Equation. Docs equations support backslash-based symbol entry: type a backslash followed by a symbol name, then press Space. Equation formatting can affect font, spacing, and editing, so it is usually unnecessary for something like 72°F. See Google’s equation instructions.

Make sure you inserted the right character

These can look alike at small sizes, but they are different characters. Applying superscript formatting to the letter o does not insert the degree sign. Search for degree or 00B0 when in doubt.
Temperature and angle spacing
Inserting ° does not decide how the number and unit should be spaced. You may see 20°C or 20 °C, depending on the style guide or discipline. Angles are commonly written like 90°; coordinates may use a space before the direction, as in 45° N. Follow the requirements of your school, employer, journal, or publication rather than assuming one spacing rule fits every context.

Troubleshooting
- You cannot find “Special characters.” Confirm you are using Docs on a computer, not the mobile app, and that you are in Google Docs rather than another Google app. Open the Symbols submenu under Insert. You can also use Tool finder (the / shortcut noted above) to search for the command, or copy and paste °.
- The Windows Alt code does nothing. Use the numeric keypad rather than the top number row; check Num Lock and whether your laptop has an embedded keypad. If it still fails, use the Docs picker instead.
- The symbol looks different or sits oddly. Fonts, font sizes, equation formatting, and rendering can change how the glyph looks. For a normal temperature or angle in prose, insert it as regular text and keep the number, sign, and unit consistently formatted. Check that you did not insert º, ⁰, or a superscript “o” by mistake.
