To insert a saved screenshot on a computer, open your document and choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer, select the screenshot, and complete the insert dialog. You can also use Drive or Photos, drag an image into the document, or copy and paste it. On Android, use Insert > Image in the Google Docs app. After insertion, choose a layout such as In line or Wrap text; text-wrapping and fixed-position controls require Pages format.

This guide covers the exact insertion paths, alternate workflows, sizing and positioning, Android, clipboard limitations, and fixes for common failures. Screenshot capture itself happens on your device or through a capture service; Google Docs handles placing the resulting image.

Insert a saved screenshot on a computer

  1. Open the document in Google Docs. Google’s own computer instructions begin by opening a document or presentation in Google Docs or Slides (official computer help).
  2. Click Insert in the menu bar, then choose Image.
  3. Select the source that matches where your screenshot is stored.
  4. Choose the file or photo, then complete the upload or insert action. The image appears at the current cursor location.
Where the screenshot is Menu path What to expect
Computer storage Insert > Image > Upload from computer Use a PNG, JPEG, WebP or another image format your browser accepts.
Google Drive or Google Photos Insert > Image > Drive & Photos Pick an image from the connected Google service.
A camera Insert > Image > Camera (when offered) Grant camera permission if your browser requests it, then capture or select the image.
A web address Insert > Image > By URL (when offered) Paste the image URL, not merely the page URL, and confirm the preview before inserting.

If the screenshot is a local file, Upload from computer is usually the least ambiguous route. Keep the original file until you confirm that the image in the document is complete and readable.

Use drag-and-drop or copy and paste

Drag an image into the document

Open the folder or web page containing the image and drag the image onto the Google Docs page. This is useful when the file is already visible and you do not want to browse through the Insert menu. A website may display a preview rather than the original file, so verify that the dropped result is the screenshot you intended.

Copy and paste

Copy the screenshot from an image editor, file viewer, browser page, or screenshot utility, click in the document, and paste. Google documents these keyboard shortcuts on computer: Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on Windows/PC, and Command+C and Command+V on Mac (Google’s copy-and-paste help).

Browser access to the system clipboard can be restricted. If the keyboard shortcut does nothing, use Insert > Image > Upload from computer instead. That upload path avoids clipboard permissions and is the reliable fallback when pasting from a browser tab or another application fails.

Resize and position the screenshot

Click the inserted image to reveal its image controls. Drag a corner handle to change its size while preserving its proportions; use a side handle only when you intentionally want to change the shape. For exact adjustments, open the image options panel, which can include size, rotation, text wrapping, position, recoloring, transparency, brightness, and contrast controls.

Choose a layout

Google Docs provides these layout choices:

  • In line: the screenshot behaves like a large character in the paragraph. Text stays above and below it.
  • Wrap text: surrounding paragraphs flow around the image.
  • Break text: text remains above and below the image, leaving the image’s horizontal area clear.
  • Behind text: the image sits under text, which can reduce readability unless the image is deliberately used as a background.
  • In front of text: the image can cover text and is useful for overlays, annotations, or movable callouts.

For a report or instructions, In line is the most predictable starting point. Use Wrap text for a narrow screenshot beside explanatory paragraphs, and Break text when the screenshot should have its own visual band.

Pages format is required for wrapping and fixed positioning

Google states that text-wrapping and position controls are unavailable in pageless documents. If those controls are missing, switch the document to Pages format using File > Page setup > Pages (the exact menu wording can vary slightly by account interface). After switching, select the image again and choose Wrap text, Break text, Behind text, In front of text, or the available position settings. In Pages format, an image using Wrap text or Break text can be set to move with the text or stay fixed on the page.

Keep screenshots readable

  • Resize from a corner rather than stretching one dimension.
  • For a wide interface screenshot, use landscape page orientation or place it on its own line with Break text.
  • Do not shrink text-heavy screenshots until labels become illegible; insert the original-resolution image and let readers zoom the document when necessary.
  • Use image options to adjust brightness, contrast, or transparency only when those changes improve the surrounding text’s readability.

Insert a screenshot on Android

  1. Open the document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Insert.
  3. Tap Image.
  4. Choose where to get the image, then tap the photo or screenshot.

These are the Android insertion steps in Google’s official help (Android image help). The page covers inserting an existing image; your phone’s separate screenshot controls determine how the screenshot is captured and where it is saved.

Which insertion route should you use?

  • Saved locally: use Upload from computer. It avoids clipboard restrictions and gives you a direct file-selection step.
  • Already in Drive or Photos: choose Drive & Photos so you do not need to download another copy first.
  • Visible in another window: try drag-and-drop.
  • Already copied: paste with the platform shortcut; switch to upload if the browser blocks clipboard access.
  • On Android: use Insert > Image in the app and select the photo from the offered source.

Troubleshooting

The Image menu is missing or disabled

Confirm that you have the document open in editing mode rather than viewing or commenting mode. If you can edit text but still cannot insert, reload the document and try the upload route again.

Paste does nothing

The browser may restrict clipboard access, especially when copying from a web page. Use Ctrl+V or Command+V as Google documents, then try Insert > Image > Upload from computer if no image appears.

The screenshot is in the wrong place

Select the image and change its layout. In line keeps it anchored to a paragraph; Wrap text, Break text, Behind text, and In front of text provide more control. If those choices are unavailable, check that the document is in Pages format rather than pageless.

Text wrapping still is not available after insertion

Switch to Pages format, then click the image again. Google does not provide wrapping and position controls in pageless documents.

The image looks distorted

Undo the last resize and drag a corner handle instead of a side handle. If the source itself is low resolution, reinsert the original screenshot rather than enlarging a small copy.

A URL insertion fails

Use the direct image address and confirm that it loads as an image in a browser. If the address points to a page, a login screen, or an expiring resource, download the screenshot and use Upload from computer or Drive & Photos.

If the screenshot is a webpage you need to capture repeatedly, ScreenshotNeo can return the image through one API request before you insert it into Docs. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF; for Google Docs, request an image format and save the response as a file. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameter details.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  1. Replace YOUR_API_KEY and the example URL with your target page.
  2. Run one of the examples and keep the resulting image file.
  3. In Docs, choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer and select that file.

ScreenshotNeo’s capture options include full-page shots with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, and blocking for ads, trackers, requests, or resource types. You can also supply headers, cookies, a user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation; request a transparent background or image resizing; cache with a TTL; create signed links for public image tags; run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call; and query usage through its API. An OpenAPI specification is available, and parameter names used by other screenshot APIs work for easier migration.

Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Docs capture the screenshot for me?

No. The insertion workflow assumes that a screenshot already exists as a file, photo, clipboard image, or image URL. Capture it with your device or a service such as ScreenshotNeo, then insert the resulting image.

Why does the image move when I edit nearby text?

That behavior follows the selected layout and anchoring. In line images follow their paragraph; in Pages format, Wrap text or Break text images can be set to move with text or remain fixed on the page.

Should I insert a PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshot?

Use the clearest copy available and keep the original file until you verify the result. Google Docs accepts the image source through its normal upload, Drive/Photos, drag-and-drop, or paste workflows; the best format depends on how your screenshot was created.
