Ad refresh requests a new ad for an existing placement without reloading the whole WordPress page. It can create additional ad requests and impressions, but it does not guarantee better fill or revenue. To use it responsibly, configure the refresh behavior on your site and separately declare that behavior in Google Ad Manager; the declaration informs buyers but does not make the page refresh.
First identify how your ads are served
Before changing a WordPress site, determine whether the placement serves AdSense ads directly or serves ads through Google Ad Manager (GAM), including AdSense demand through GAM dynamic allocation. The distinction matters: Google AdSense Help says its placement policy prohibits auto-refresh placements, while expressly distinguishing AdSense ads served through GAM dynamic allocation. Its policy states: “This includes placing ads on pages or in placements that auto-redirect or auto-refresh.” Read the Google AdSense ad placement policies and confirm which serving arrangement applies to the slot. Do not assume that a WordPress plugin or an Ad Manager declaration makes a setup compliant.
This guide focuses on WordPress placements served through GAM. The 10up Ad Refresh Control plugin listing is one implementation option, not a substitute for checking your ad-serving setup, platform rules, or theme and ad-tag compatibility.
Choose a refresh trigger that matches what happens on the page
Google Ad Manager recognizes three refresh trigger categories. The page behavior and the publisher declaration must agree; choosing a label in GAM alone does not implement the behavior.
| Trigger | What it means | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| User action | A user action causes the refresh. | Scrolling or general activity alone does not count unless it navigates to or surfaces substantially new content. |
| Event-driven | A qualifying content event changes what the user sees, prompting a refresh. | Small changes made only to trigger ad refreshes do not qualify as substantially new content. |
| Time-based | The slot refreshes after a time interval. | Use only where the real page implementation refreshes on that interval, and declare a minimum interval no faster than the behavior. |
Google recommends user-action or event-driven refresh where possible and notes, “In general, the longer the interval between refreshes, the more desirable your inventory is to buyers.” That is buyer guidance, not a promise of higher demand or revenue. See Google Ad Manager’s refresh declaration and interval guidance.

Configure the WordPress page behavior
The 10up plugin listing describes controls for visibility threshold, refresh interval, maximum refresh count, and exclusions. Its documentation says not to set its visibility threshold below 50% and says the plugin enforces a 30-second minimum interval. Those are settings and limits attributed to this plugin; they are not universal Google recommendations or a substitute for GAM’s declared interval requirements.
- Install and configure only after confirming serving setup. Review the plugin’s current listing and test it with the site’s theme, ad tags, caching, and other ad-related plugins. The listing does not establish compatibility for every WordPress configuration.
- Set visibility and interval behavior. Choose when a placement is eligible to refresh and the interval that the page will actually enforce. Follow the plugin’s stated threshold and minimum, then ensure the GAM declaration is not faster than the implementation.
- Limit repeats and exclude unsuitable slots. Set a maximum refresh count and use exclusions for placements that should not refresh. These controls can prevent a slot from continuing to request ads in contexts where refresh is not intended.
- Test the rendered page. Verify that only intended placements refresh, that the expected visibility and timing conditions apply, and that the page does not reload. Check for conflicts with lazy loading, responsive layouts, or other scripts before enabling the behavior broadly.
For implementation context, consult Google’s Google Publisher Tag ad best practices. Automattic Newspack also describes the plugin’s intended Ad Refresh Control use with Google Ad Manager.

Declare the same behavior in Google Ad Manager
After the page behavior is configured, create a refresh declaration for the inventory it affects in GAM and select the matching trigger type and minimum interval. Google’s documentation is explicit: “Rules only allow you to declare that ads refresh; they do not control the behavior of ads on the page.” A declaration tells buyers about the inventory; it neither switches on WordPress refresh nor repairs a mismatch between the declaration and the actual page behavior.
Google lists minimum declaration intervals of 30 seconds for event-driven and time-based refreshes on desktop and mobile web. For mobile apps, its guidance lists a 30-second minimum and a 60-second recommended interval. These are GAM declaration values, not a general instruction to refresh every WordPress placement at the minimum. The declaration must reflect actual behavior, and Google’s interval guidance favors longer intervals for buyer desirability. Follow the current Ad Manager refresh declaration requirements for the inventory and environment you use.

Measure viewability as well as impressions
A refresh can result in another request or impression, but an impression is not necessarily viewable. Google’s display viewability criteria require at least 50% of an ad’s pixels to be visible continuously for one second, with the ad rendered. That is a viewability definition, not a refresh interval. Google cautions that auto-refresh activity can produce measurable impressions that are not viewable; consult its viewability best practices and viewability report troubleshooting guidance.
Evaluate a controlled change over a meaningful period, comparing ad requests and impressions with viewability, fill, revenue, and user experience. The cited documentation establishes mechanisms and safeguards, not a general impression or revenue lift for WordPress sites, and it does not identify an ideal setting for every site.
