The reliable way to improve WordPress performance is to use a repeatable measure–change–remeasure cycle. Test the exact production URL on mobile and desktop, separate real-user (field) data from controlled lab data, use a WordPress speed-audit plugin to find server and configuration causes, change one variable, and retest under comparable conditions.
Why a speed testing plugin helps
A public URL test can show what a browser experiences, but it cannot fully explain WordPress-only causes. A WordPress audit plugin can expose time to first byte (TTFB), cache status, request counts, CSS and JavaScript payloads, image weight, autoloaded options, database size, persistent object-cache status, PHP and database versions, and active plugins when those checks are available.
Use scores as warning signals rather than goals. The underlying metrics and audits tell you which change is likely to help and whether it actually did.
What PageSpeed Insights is measuring
PageSpeed Insights (PSI) combines Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data from real users with Lighthouse lab testing. Field data answers how eligible visitors experienced the page over time; lab data is a controlled diagnostic run. A page can therefore have a good lab result but weak real-user results, or the reverse.
#1 Best Overall
PSI assesses pages on mobile and desktop and reports different metrics for each strategy. Treat the two results as separate baselines, especially when your audience uses phones as well as computers.
Core Web Vitals in field data
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): when the main visible content becomes available.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): unexpected movement of visible elements.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds to user interactions.
Useful Lighthouse diagnostics
- First Contentful Paint (FCP) and Speed Index indicate how quickly visual content appears.
- Total Blocking Time (TBT) helps reveal JavaScript that keeps the main thread busy.
- Time to Interactive (TTI) indicates when the page becomes reliably usable in the lab run.
Do not compare a PSI score directly with a score from another service: test hardware, throttling, location and scoring formulas differ.
How to improve WordPress performance with a speed testing plugin
-
Establish a production baseline
Enter the exact public URL you want to improve, not only the home page. Run both mobile and desktop tests. Record the date, URL, device strategy, field-data availability, Lighthouse results and the notable audits. If you test a logged-in or uncached page, label it clearly because it does not represent the normal visitor path.

Diagnose the bottleneck before changing settings
Start with LCP, CLS and INP when field data exists. Then inspect FCP, Speed Index, TBT and TTI in Lighthouse. In the WordPress audit, check TTFB and whether the response was served from cache; count requests and examine CSS, JavaScript and image bytes; review autoloaded options, database size, persistent object caching, PHP and database versions, theme behavior and active plugins.
These clues narrow the cause. High TTFB points toward hosting, PHP, database work or a missed cache. Large images and late-loading hero content commonly affect LCP. Excess JavaScript can raise TBT and delay INP. Layout dimensions that are not reserved can produce CLS. A plugin conflict may appear as a sudden request, error or payload change after activation.
-
Back up and change one class of setting
Make a current backup before editing performance settings. Change one variable or one related class at a time so the result is attributable. Appropriate experiments include enabling or correcting page caching, optimizing oversized images, deferring or removing unnecessary assets, addressing slow server response, or disabling a plugin that duplicates another feature. Avoid enabling several optimization features simultaneously when you are still diagnosing; overlapping minification, combination, lazy-loading or script-delay rules can create new failures.
-
Retest the same way
Use the same URL, mobile or desktop strategy and comparable test conditions. Purge the relevant page, object and CDN caches when the change requires it, then allow the cache to warm if that is how normal visitors are served. Run multiple tests when results vary and note network, server or content changes that could affect the run.

Compare and monitor
Save the before and after results, including the metrics and diagnostics rather than only the score. A genuine improvement should appear in the metric connected to your change without causing a serious regression elsewhere. Schedule recurring tests and configure email or other regression alerts when the plugin supports them.
WordPress-specific checks that public tests cannot replace
Server response and caching
TTFB measures the wait before the first response bytes. Check hosting capacity, PHP worker limits, PHP version, database version, page-cache hits and object-cache availability. A fast front end cannot compensate for an origin that is slow on every uncached request.
Rank #4
Database and autoloaded options
Large or unnecessary autoloaded options are loaded on many requests and can increase application work. Remove data only after identifying the owning plugin or theme and confirming that it is safe; deleting rows blindly can break the site.
Plugins, themes and assets
Review active plugins for duplicate functions, front-end scripts loaded site-wide and features that are no longer used. Test deactivation on a staging copy where possible. Reduce image bytes and serve appropriately sized images, then verify that lazy-loading has not been applied to the above-the-fold content that drives LCP.

| Tool | Best use | What it tells you | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| PageSpeed Insights | Independent baseline | CrUX field data (when available), Lighthouse mobile and desktop lab results, metrics and optimization suggestions | Cannot see private WordPress settings such as autoloaded options, active-plugin behavior or object-cache configuration |
| WordPress speed-audit plugin, such as Speed Analyzer | Diagnosing WordPress causes | WordPress, server, cache, database, plugin and asset context; its listing also describes saved comparisons, scheduled tests, email alerts and PDF reports | Available checks and monitoring features depend on the plugin and its current plan or release; validate findings before making destructive changes |
| Site Kit by Google | Keeping PSI visible in wp-admin | PageSpeed Insights data and suggestions surfaced in a Google-connected dashboard | It presents PSI information; it does not replace a full WordPress server and database audit |
| GTmetrix | Additional controlled lab testing | Lighthouse-based reports with selectable test regions and configurable analysis options | Its score reflects GTmetrix hardware and test setup and is not directly interchangeable with PSI’s score |
For most sites, use PSI as the common external baseline and add a WordPress audit plugin when the report must explain what is happening inside WordPress. Site Kit is convenient for dashboard access, while GTmetrix is useful when controlled test location or configuration is important.

How to tell whether an optimization worked
- Compare the same URL and device strategy, with cache state documented.
- Compare the metric tied to the change: for example, TTFB after a server or cache change, image bytes and LCP after image work, or TBT and INP after JavaScript changes.
- Check for collateral damage such as broken menus, missing styles, shifted content, failed forms or slower uncached responses.
- Use field data for the longer-term visitor outcome and lab data for fast, repeatable diagnosis.
- Keep the saved before/after record and continue scheduled monitoring so a later plugin, theme, content or hosting change does not undo the gain.
Common failure modes
The score changes wildly between runs
Run several tests, keep the strategy and URL fixed, and record cache and network conditions. A single lab run is not a trend.
The lab score improves but visitors still report slowness
Check CrUX field data, which may reflect devices, networks, geographic distribution and pages that your lab run did not represent. Inspect server response and cache behavior for real traffic.
Optimization breaks the layout or interactions
Roll back the last change, purge caches and isolate the affected script or stylesheet. Re-enable features one at a time, excluding the conflicting asset rather than stacking more optimization rules.
