To improve a WordPress readability score, use the plugin’s individual flags to find a specific passage to revise—not as a command to rewrite the whole post. In Yoast SEO, focus on clearer structure, shorter sentences where they help, familiar wording, and transitions that show how ideas connect. Keep the technical detail your readers need; a green indicator is not more important than accuracy or audience fit.
Find the readability feedback in WordPress
Yoast SEO displays its readability analysis in the WordPress block-editor sidebar and in the post or page meta box. Review the individual checks and their feedback to locate the relevant text. An orange or red result points to an issue for review; it does not mean every paragraph needs rewriting. The analysis can be enabled or disabled in settings site-wide, for individual pages, or for users. See Yoast’s readability analysis overview and instructions for enabling or disabling it.
If you use a different SEO plugin, the labels and available checks may differ. Follow the feedback shown by the plugin you have installed rather than assuming Yoast’s criteria apply to every WordPress site.

Break up dense paragraphs and long sections
Split a paragraph when it contains several distinct ideas or makes readers hold too much information in mind at once. For a long section, add a descriptive subheading that tells readers what the next part answers. Do not add a heading to a short passage merely to satisfy a checker; it should help people scan the post.
#1 Best Overall
Yoast checks paragraph length and subheading distribution, but its cutoffs are product rules, not universal standards for good writing. Its current scoring documentation includes word-count thresholds for long sections and a different criterion for cornerstone content. Exact criteria can change, so use the feedback in your installed version when a precise cutoff matters. Yoast’s scoring documentation describes the checks.
Shorten sentences without losing meaning
When a sentence feels difficult to follow, look for a natural place to split it. Put the actor and action closer to the beginning when that makes the instruction or responsibility clearer. Yoast’s current scoring documentation uses a default recommendation of no more than 20 words per sentence, with different values for some languages. Treat that as a prompt to inspect a sentence, not a requirement to make every sentence shorter; a longer sentence may be clearer when its ideas belong together.
Use active voice where it improves clarity
Yoast flags excessive passive constructions and says, “Passive voice tends to make sentences longer and harder to follow.” That is the plugin maker’s rationale for its check, not a rule that every passive sentence is wrong. Prefer active voice when it makes clear who did what. Keep passive voice when the actor is unknown, unimportant, or deliberately deemphasized.

Yoast’s feature FAQ gives a 10% passive-sentence threshold for its assessment. This is a threshold in Yoast’s tool, not an independently established measure of reader comprehension. The feature page explains the check.

Choose familiar words, but preserve necessary terms
Replace needless jargon and inflated wording with familiar alternatives. Keep a specialist term when it is important to the subject, and explain it the first time it appears. Yoast lists its word-complexity assessment as a Premium feature, so not every installation will show that check. Its availability is also language-dependent.
Add transitions when they clarify the relationship
Words such as “however,” “therefore,” and “for example” can signal contrast, cause and effect, or an illustration. Add one when readers need help seeing the connection; do not insert transitions mechanically to meet a percentage. Yoast’s checks cover transition words and repeated sentence beginnings as well as sentence and paragraph patterns.
Rank #4
Understand what the score measures—and what it does not
Yoast readability analysis is a group of checks, not a single universal measure of whether people will understand a post. Its documented checks cover subheading distribution, paragraph length, sentence length, repeated sentence beginnings, passive voice, transition words, and whether there is enough text to analyze. Word complexity is listed as a Premium check. Which assessments are available depends partly on language support; Yoast identifies Flesch Reading Ease and word complexity as English-only. Consult Yoast’s feature details and its scoring criteria for the checks it documents.
Flesch Reading Ease is a separate signal in Yoast Insights, not one of the readability assessments Yoast currently uses. It is calculated from sentence and word characteristics; a higher score generally indicates easier text according to that formula. The formula cannot judge context, tone, intended audience, accuracy, or whether a technical term is necessary. Yoast recommends using it as a guide rather than chasing a perfect number. See Yoast Insights and its readability guidance.
| Signal | What it evaluates | Useful for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yoast readability checks | Separate checks for structure and sentence patterns, plus vocabulary in Premium | Finding a specific revision to make in the editor | Criteria and language availability depend on the product and language. |
| Flesch Reading Ease | A formula based on sentence and word characteristics | An additional view of the difficulty of English text | It does not account for context, tone, audience, or the need for technical terms, and Yoast no longer uses it as a readability assessment. |
Yoast also says its readability score is not a guarantee of better search rankings. The practical goal is a post that works for its intended readers, not a number that overrides the writing. Its scoring documentation is maintained on a moving project branch, so exact thresholds may change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a revision workflow that protects the content
- Draft for meaning first. Organize the argument or instructions in the order readers need. Yoast describes leaving the score aside during the first draft and making final adjustments afterward.
- Open the plugin’s analysis. In Yoast, check the block-editor sidebar or the post or page meta box. Review each flagged item and use its feedback or issue locator to find the passage.
- Make the smallest useful edit. Restructure dense paragraphs, add a helpful subheading, clarify sentence construction, or replace unnecessary jargon in the passage that triggered the check.
- Read the revision for meaning and audience. Read it aloud or review it at a normal reading speed. Confirm that it still includes the qualifications, steps, examples, and technical detail readers need.
If a post remains imperfect because it explains a complex subject to expert readers, retain the terms and detail that serve them. The editing question is whether the text is clear for that audience—not whether it can be made simple for everyone.
WordPress’s accessibility preferences are separate from readability scores. For example, the editor includes an option to keep the text cursor inside a block to aid screen-reader use; it does not change the readability analysis. See WordPress editor preferences.
