Import the contacts from the old SIM into the iPhone first, confirm they appear in Contacts, and only then replace that SIM with the new physical SIM or activate the eSIM. iPhone does not normally copy contacts directly from one SIM card to another.
What actually moves when you change SIM cards
Three separate things are often confused:
- Cellular service: the SIM or eSIM identifies your line and connects it to the carrier.
- SIM-stored contacts: a limited address book that an older phone may have written to the SIM.
- iPhone contacts: records stored on the iPhone or synchronized through iCloud, Google, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo, or another account.
The safe route is old SIM → iPhone Contacts → optional cloud/account backup → new SIM or eSIM. Apple’s instructions likewise say to insert the previous SIM, import its contacts, verify them, and then replace it with the newer SIM (Apple Support).
Before you start
- Keep the old SIM. Do not discard, deactivate, cut, or return it until you have checked the imported contacts.
- Confirm the contacts are actually on the SIM. They may instead be in the old phone’s memory, Google Contacts, iCloud, Outlook, or another account.
- The old SIM must physically fit an iPhone that can read it. A SIM adapter or another compatible phone may be needed for a different size.
- Turn on the iPhone. If the SIM has a PIN, unlock it when prompted.
- Use Wi-Fi if you plan to enable iCloud or synchronize an online account.
- Some US iPhone 14 and later models are eSIM-only and have no physical SIM tray. Use the fallback methods below for those phones.
Exact steps on iOS 26
1. Insert the old SIM
Insert the previous SIM—the one that contains the contacts—into the iPhone. The iPhone must be able to recognize and read it. Apple documents this as a compatible GSM-SIM feature, not a guarantee for every SIM or iPhone combination (iPhone User Guide for iOS 26).

2. Open the SIM import command
Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts. On older iOS releases, the command may appear under Settings > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts; the current iOS 26 path places Contacts inside Apps (Apple Support).

3. Select a destination account
If the iPhone asks where to save the contacts, choose the account that should own them:
- iCloud: best if you use an Apple Account and want the contacts on your other Apple devices.
- Google, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo, or another account: use this when that account is already your main contacts store.
Accounts can coexist on iPhone, and the Default Account setting controls where newly created contacts go (Apple’s Contacts account guide). Importing into the intended account avoids creating a second, disconnected address book.
4. Wait for the import to finish
Leave the iPhone on the import screen until it completes. The process may not show a detailed progress indicator.
5. Verify the imported records
Open Contacts and check several names, phone numbers, spelling, and the approximate total against the old phone. Also open the Contacts lists or account view to confirm the records landed in the account you selected. Check for duplicates before removing the old SIM.

6. Turn on a backup or synchronization account
For iCloud, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All (or Show All) > Contacts, turn it on, and follow any merge prompt. Apple says enabled iCloud Contacts become available on devices signed in to the same Apple Account with Contacts enabled (iCloud Contacts setup).
7. Replace the SIM
After verification, remove the old SIM and insert the new physical SIM, or complete the carrier’s eSIM activation. The imported contacts remain in the iPhone or selected account; they are not dependent on the old SIM remaining installed.
What transfers—and what may be lost
SIM storage is a simple, limited format. The result depends on how the previous phone wrote contacts to the card (Apple Support).

Do not assume that every field in the old phone’s Contacts app was on the SIM. Richer records often belong to phone storage or an online account.

If “Import SIM Contacts” is missing
- Confirm the old SIM is inserted correctly, recognized, and unlocked.
- Restart the iPhone and check Settings > General > Software Update.
- Check whether the iPhone has a physical SIM tray. An eSIM-only model cannot read the old card directly.
- Try the SIM in the original phone or another compatible phone. If that phone also cannot read it, the card may be damaged or incompatible.
- Inspect the old phone’s contact-storage settings. The visible contacts may be in Google, Microsoft, the phone’s internal memory, or another service rather than on the SIM.
Apple qualifies the feature with “if your SIM card supports it,” so a missing command does not prove that the iPhone is defective.
If the iPhone imports zero or only some contacts
Zero results usually mean the contacts were not stored on the SIM. Return the SIM to the old phone and determine whether its contacts came from Google, a manufacturer cloud service, internal storage, or a work account.
Partial results can occur when the SIM reached its capacity, when entries were split between SIM and phone storage, or when the SIM format cannot represent richer fields. Compare the imported list with the old phone’s full list, then use account synchronization or a vCard export for the remainder.
Alternatives when SIM import is not possible
Sync the old phone’s account
If the contacts are in Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, or another service, add that account on the iPhone at Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts > Add Account, sign in, and enable Contacts. This generally preserves more fields than SIM import and avoids SIM-size or tray issues (Apple’s account instructions).

Use Move to iOS during iPhone setup
For a working Android phone and a new or erased iPhone, Apple’s Move to iOS process can transfer contacts along with supported messages, photos, calendars, call history, and files (Move from Android to iPhone). It is primarily a setup-time route and may require erasing an already configured iPhone.
Export and import a vCard
If the old phone or account can create a .vcf file, send it to the iPhone by email, message, or cloud storage and tap the attachment. You can also import a vCard through iCloud.com. iCloud Contacts supports vCard import and export, including files containing multiple contacts (iCloud vCard guide).
Use another compatible phone or support service
For a damaged SIM, unusual format, inaccessible old phone, or eSIM-only iPhone, another compatible phone may be able to read the card and synchronize or export its contacts. A carrier can help replace or activate service, but carrier support is not a guaranteed recovery service for data on a damaged SIM.
Special cases after the switch
The new SIM has a different phone number
Contact import does not transfer a phone number or cellular account. The carrier controls the number assigned to the new SIM or eSIM; contact migration and number migration are separate operations.

Contacts appear duplicated
Duplicates can result from importing into an account that already contains the same people, displaying overlapping iCloud and Google lists, or importing more than once. Back up first, identify which account owns each copy, and remove duplicates only after confirming the authoritative records.
Contacts seem to disappear after the replacement
Reinsert the old SIM if possible, repeat the import, enable the correct iCloud or account Contacts switch, and check the Contacts app’s Lists or account view. A disabled account can hide contacts without deleting them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I activate the new SIM first and import the old SIM later?
Only if you can still access the old SIM in a compatible phone. The safest order is to import and verify first, because activating or returning the old SIM may make its contacts inaccessible.
Can an eSIM contain the contacts from my old physical SIM?
eSIM activation provides cellular service; it does not automatically import the old SIM’s contact records. Import or synchronize the contacts separately.
Will changing SIM cards erase contacts already stored on my iPhone?
Changing the SIM normally changes cellular service, not contacts saved in iPhone storage or a contacts account. If contacts were never imported and existed only on the old SIM, they may no longer be visible.
Is a paid contact-transfer app required?
No. For a readable compatible SIM, Apple’s built-in import is sufficient. Account synchronization, Move to iOS, and vCard import are also available alternatives.
