Short answer: Treat unexpected WhatsApp messages, calls, group invitations, links, and QR codes as untrusted until you verify them independently. Don’t reply impulsively, click links, scan QR codes, or share verification codes. If a message looks suspicious, preserve evidence if needed, then block and report the sender. Protect your account with two-step verification and check Linked Devices.
Spam, scams, phishing, and account takeover: what’s the difference?
Spam is unwanted bulk messaging, advertising, calls, or group invitations. A scam is an attempt to steal money, account access, or personal information. Phishing uses messages, links, or QR codes to trick you into revealing credentials or installing something unsafe. An account takeover happens when someone gains control of your WhatsApp account—often after persuading you to share a registration code or link their device.
An unwanted message may be more than an annoyance: it can be the first step in a fraud attempt. WhatsApp and Meta warn that some scams move victims from an initial message to other social platforms, messaging services, websites, or payment and cryptocurrency services. Meta’s scam-prevention guidance recommends pausing and verifying before acting.

- “Wrong number” conversations: A casual opening gradually turns personal, then leads to investment advice or a request to move to another app.
- Jobs and easy-money offers: Work-from-home, task, product-rating, or product-liking schemes may ask for a payment or deposit before you can supposedly withdraw earnings.
- Investment and cryptocurrency groups: Unsolicited groups may use fake testimonials, promises of guaranteed returns, or claims of a can’t-miss opportunity. The CFTC warns about investment fraud on messaging apps.
- Delivery, invoice, or account alerts: A message claims that a package is delayed, a bill is unpaid, or an account will be suspended unless you click a link.
- Fake prizes, refunds, giveaways, or government payments: The sender asks you to provide details, pay a fee, or visit a link to claim something you weren’t expecting.
- Impersonated friends or relatives: Someone using a familiar account urgently asks for money, gift cards, or a verification code.
- Fake support or official notices: A supposed WhatsApp, Meta, bank, police, tax, or customer-support representative asks for credentials or tells you to scan a QR code.
- Voting and competition requests: A contact asks you to vote for someone, often through a link or QR code that leads to a credential or account-access trick.
- Unfamiliar group invitations: An unsolicited group may promise investment advice, jobs, shopping deals, or exclusive opportunities.
Red flags: pause before you act
- Urgency or secrecy: “Act now,” “your account closes today,” or “don’t tell anyone” pressures you to skip verification.
- Requests for money: Be especially cautious with urgent requests, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payments to an unfamiliar account.
- Requests for secrets: Never share your WhatsApp six-digit registration code, two-step-verification PIN, password-reset code, banking one-time code, password, or card security details.
- Unexpected links, files, or QR codes: Watch for misspelled or shortened web addresses, requests to download an app, and pages that ask for a code or QR scan.
- Pressure to switch platforms: Moving you to another messenger, website, or payment service can make a scam harder to recognize.
- Unusual behavior from someone you know: A friend’s account may be compromised. Verify through a separate channel before sending money or following instructions.
A profile photo, familiar name, business profile, or official-looking logo does not prove identity. Names and photos can be copied, accounts can be compromised, and sender details can be disguised. The FBI explains spoofing and phishing; its practical advice is to find contact information independently rather than trusting details in a suspicious message. A country code alone does not establish whether a sender is legitimate.

End-to-end encryption protects message and call content in transit, but it does not authenticate the person messaging you or make a link safe. A business account is not proof that every request is genuine, either.
What to do when an unknown number messages you
- Pause. Don’t reply just to ask who it is. Responding can confirm that your number is active and invite more attempts.
- Don’t click, download, scan, or share. Avoid links, unexpected files, QR codes, and requests for verification codes or PINs.
- Verify independently if the request could be real. Contact the person or organization using a phone number or website you already trust—not details supplied in the message. For a known contact, call a number already saved in your phone or verify in person.
- Preserve evidence if the message involves fraud, threats, extortion, or harassment. Save screenshots and note numbers, usernames, payment details, or transaction IDs before deleting anything.
- Report and block the sender or group. Use the options available from the chat or contact or group information screen. The precise labels and screens can vary by app version and operating system.
- Delete the conversation or leave the group once you have preserved anything you may need.
How to stop unwanted WhatsApp contact
Block and report
Block a sender to stop ordinary contact from that number. Report a message or account that appears to be spam, fraud, impersonation, or abuse so WhatsApp can receive the report. For a suspicious unknown sender, doing both is usually sensible. A report does not guarantee immediate action, and blocking one number cannot prevent someone from trying another number, group, or platform.
Silence unknown calls
WhatsApp’s Silence Unknown Callers feature prevents calls from unknown numbers from ringing; they can still appear in your Calls list. Look for it in WhatsApp’s privacy settings. Silencing reduces interruptions—it is not the same as blocking, and an unknown caller is not automatically a scammer. If a call might be legitimate, return it using a trusted number. Be cautious with unfamiliar groups
Don’t engage with a group you don’t recognize, click its links, or open its files. Check the group’s name, participants, and stated purpose; then leave and report it if it appears suspicious. Review who can add you to groups in your privacy settings. Meta has announced a safety overview for groups added by people outside your contacts, with information about the group and an option to leave without first viewing the chat. The feature’s availability may depend on rollout. See Meta’s announcement.
Use Privacy Checkup
Where available, WhatsApp’s Privacy Checkup provides a guided way to review settings such as who can see your profile photo, About information, status, last-seen and online information, who can add you to groups, and how unknown calls are handled. Choose limits that fit your needs: restrictive settings can reduce unwanted contact but may make it harder for legitimate new customers, event organizers, or acquaintances to reach you. Privacy controls reduce exposure; they do not authenticate a sender or guarantee that no one can message you.
Secure your WhatsApp account
Turn on two-step verification
In the app, go to Settings → Account → Two-step verification (labels may vary). Set a PIN that you don’t use elsewhere and add a recovery email if WhatsApp offers the option. Never tell anyone your PIN. Two-step verification adds protection to account registration, but it does not make a malicious link safe or replace careful verification.

Review Linked Devices
Go to Settings → Linked Devices and check every listed browser, computer, or tablet. Log out of anything you don’t recognize. Never scan a QR code that someone sends you or that an unfamiliar website says is needed to vote, claim a prize, receive support, or verify your account. A WhatsApp Web QR code can authorize a linked device; it is not just a harmless verification image. The Swiss National Cyber Security Centre describes QR-code account-takeover scams.

Meta announced Strict Account Settings in January 2026 as a higher-protection mode for people who may face sophisticated or targeted attacks. Announced restrictions include automatically blocking attachments and media from unknown senders, silencing calls from unknown people, and limiting other settings that can affect convenience. The announced path is Settings → Privacy → Advanced. The feature is rolling out, so not every account will show it; update WhatsApp and check whether it is available. You clicked a link but entered nothing
Close the page. Don’t download or install anything it offered. Update WhatsApp and your phone’s operating system, review Linked Devices, enable two-step verification, and watch for unusual account activity or follow-up messages. Clicking alone does not prove that your account or phone is compromised; risk depends on what happened next, the device, and whether you entered information or installed something.

You entered a password or other account details
Change the exposed password immediately using the genuine service’s app or website, not the message link. Change it anywhere else you reused it, enable multifactor authentication, review recent login activity, and contact the service through an official channel. If you entered payment or banking details, contact the relevant institution as soon as possible.
You shared your WhatsApp registration code
Treat the account as at risk. Open the genuine WhatsApp app and register your phone number again using the new six-digit SMS code. Then review Linked Devices and log out anything you don’t recognize. Tell your contacts through a different channel to ignore recent messages or links from your account. If an attacker set a two-step-verification PIN, recovery may be delayed: the Swiss NCSC describes a seven-day wait in the specific case where access must be restored without that PIN. That timing does not apply to every account-recovery situation.
You scanned a QR code
Open WhatsApp and go straight to Settings → Linked Devices. Log out any device you don’t recognize, change your two-step-verification PIN if needed, and warn contacts through a trusted alternative channel. Contact WhatsApp through its official Help Center if access or account behavior remains abnormal.

If money or personal information was exposed
Contact your bank, card issuer, payment service, or cryptocurrency exchange using its official app, a number on a statement, or a website you locate independently. Ask whether a transfer can be stopped or recalled, but don’t assume it can be reversed. Change exposed credentials and preserve screenshots, usernames, phone numbers, payment addresses, and transaction IDs.
Reporting channels depend on where you live. In the United States, report consumer fraud to the Federal Trade Commission and internet-enabled crime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Readers elsewhere should use their local consumer-protection, cybercrime, or law-enforcement reporting service.
