To host an image online, put the file somewhere that can serve it over HTTPS, then use its public URL in your website or share it with others. For a small static site, keeping images in the site repository is often simplest. For durable direct links and larger collections, use object storage; add a CDN when traffic or global delivery needs justify the extra setup. If you only want to share personal photos, a photo library may be easier—but it is not the same as a permanent public image host.
First decide what “host an image” means for you
Image hosting can mean several different things: storing files for your own website, getting a direct URL to embed elsewhere, sharing a private photo album, or finding an image you are allowed to reuse. These jobs have different requirements. A service that is convenient for family photo sharing may not provide stable public URLs for a production website, while a public storage bucket may expose every object to anyone who has its URL.
Before uploading, decide whether the images should be public or private, who needs to control the URL, how long the files must remain available, and whether traffic or image transformations are likely to grow. Also confirm you have permission to use the image; placing a file online does not grant copyright or reuse rights.
Choose a hosting approach
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Website repository | A small personal or project site built from static files | Convenient alongside the site code, but repositories are not a general-purpose media CDN. GitHub documents restrictions for certain commercial or quota-heavy hosting uses. |
| Object storage | Durable files and stable direct image URLs, especially for a larger collection | You must configure access deliberately. A basic public-bucket configuration can make content available to anyone on the public internet. |
| Object storage plus CDN | High traffic, global audiences, or image delivery that needs edge caching or transformations | More components and configuration than a single bucket; confirm how the CDN connects to the storage origin. |
| Consumer photo library | Personal albums, organization, and sharing with people | Provider policies and quotas can affect access, uploads, or account availability; it may not be suitable as a production website asset host. |
| Licensed image collection | Finding images to reuse when the file’s license permits your intended use | Check the exact license and attribution requirements on the file page; hosting the file yourself does not remove them. |
Use a repository for a small static site
GitHub Pages publishes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files from a repository and supports user, organization, and project sites. Keeping a modest set of site images with the site makes versioning and deployment straightforward. Place files in a predictable folder such as images/, use stable filenames, and refer to them with paths appropriate to the published site.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For example, if a file named header.webp is published at images/header.webp under the site root, HTML can refer to it as /images/header.webp. For a project site hosted below a repository-specific path, check that root-relative paths resolve under that project path; a relative URL such as images/header.webp may be more appropriate depending on the page location.
Use this approach when simplicity matters more than independent media management. GitHub explicitly limits some commercial and quota-heavy hosting uses, so review its current terms and limits before sending production traffic through Pages.
Use object storage for durable direct links
Object storage keeps image files separate from your application or site repository. You upload objects into a bucket, decide which objects can be read publicly or privately, and use the provider’s delivery URL or a domain you configure. That separation is useful when a media collection grows, when assets need independent access controls, or when multiple applications use the same files.
Do not assume that an uploaded object is private—or that a URL is secret. Decide the intended access policy before making a bucket or its contents public. A public website image must be fetchable by visitors’ browsers, but administrative access and upload permissions should remain restricted.

Add a CDN when delivery needs it
A CDN can serve cached copies closer to visitors while using object storage as the origin. This is most useful when an audience is geographically spread out, image traffic is substantial, or an image delivery service needs to resize or otherwise transform files. Google Media CDN lists Cloud Storage, Amazon S3-compatible buckets, Azure Blob Storage, and public web servers as supported origins. The exact configuration depends on the CDN and storage provider you choose.
A CDN does not replace the origin: the original file still needs a durable home, and the CDN needs a route to retrieve it. If you change an image while retaining the same public URL, cached copies may not update immediately; versioned filenames are one way to avoid confusing old and new assets.
Use a photo library for personal sharing
Consumer photo services are designed around libraries, albums, and people rather than application asset delivery. They can be a sensible choice for personal sharing, but do not assume a shared link is a permanent, unrestricted direct image URL. Provider policies and quota enforcement may restrict access, reject uploads, remove content, or limit accounts. Check current sharing and storage behavior before relying on such a library for a website.
How to publish an image as a website URL
- Choose the destination. Use the site repository for a small static project, object storage for durable independent assets, or a storage origin plus CDN when scale or global delivery calls for it.
- Prepare the file. Choose an appropriate web image format, give it a stable descriptive filename, and keep a consistent folder or object-key structure. Google lists BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF among supported image formats.
- Upload or commit it. Add the file to the repository and publish the site, or upload it to the selected storage bucket. For a bucket, explicitly set the intended read access rather than relying on a default.
- Get the published URL. Use the site’s published path, the storage provider’s public delivery address, or the CDN URL once configured. Test the URL directly in a browser window where you are not signed in to the storage account.
- Use HTTPS and embed it. Put the HTTPS URL in the page and add useful alternative text. An HTTP image embedded on an HTTPS site can trigger mixed-content problems or fail to load.
- Check permissions and operational limits. Confirm that the image license permits your use, keep private material private, and review the provider’s usage, commercial-use, and quota rules.
A simple HTML embed looks like this:
<img src="https://example.com/images/header.webp" alt="A descriptive summary of the image">
Replace the example address with the actual HTTPS URL you published. Write alt text that conveys the image’s useful content in context; if the image is purely decorative, use an empty alt value so assistive technology can skip it.

Direct image URL, sharing page, or download link?
A direct image URL resolves to the image resource itself and is useful in an <img> element. A sharing page may instead open a gallery, viewer, or access screen. A download link may prompt a file download rather than displaying the image inline. If you need an embeddable image, test the exact link you plan to use in a new browser session and confirm it displays the file without requiring account access.
For public site assets, use URLs that you control and expect to keep working. Avoid renaming or moving files after publication unless you update every reference. If you need to replace an image but preserve the old URL’s meaning, use a new filename and update pages deliberately rather than relying on caches to refresh at the same address.
Security, licensing, and search visibility
- Public means public. Anyone who can retrieve a publicly served image can copy it. Do not place sensitive or personal material in a public bucket or public page.
- Use HTTPS end to end. HTTPS image URLs avoid mixed-content issues on secure pages. Check old page content and templates for lingering HTTP references.
- Verify reuse rights. Google advises checking whether reuse is permitted and reviewing the precise license terms. Wikimedia Commons can help find reusable media, but copy author and licensing information from the file description page when attribution is required.
- Make images understandable. Add accurate alt text where the image communicates information. When search visibility matters, keep the page containing the image indexable; Google’s image guidance covers supported formats and discovery.
- Use a CDN intentionally. If you put a CDN in front of storage and search visibility matters, verify the CDN domain in Search Console as appropriate.
- Review provider terms and quotas. Limits and commercial-use rules can matter more than the upload flow when an image becomes part of a production service.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
There is no single storage, bandwidth, or latency price that can be stated for every provider and configuration. Costs depend on the service, amount stored, requests, delivery traffic, and any transformation or CDN features selected. Check the current pricing and quota pages of the provider you choose rather than assuming a free tier will cover ongoing production use.
For reliability, keep originals in a durable location, avoid ad hoc manual file naming, and know how you would restore or republish assets if a deployment or account setting changes. A CDN can improve delivery for distant visitors, but it adds configuration and cache behavior to manage. For a small site with modest traffic, repository hosting may be the lower-maintenance choice; for a growing library, separating files into object storage makes the content lifecycle easier to manage.

Troubleshooting image links
The image appears as a broken icon
- Open the exact URL in a new browser tab. A typo, wrong case in a filename, or incorrect project-site path can make the resource unavailable.
- Check whether the object is private or requires a signed-in session. A URL that works for you may not work for public visitors.
- Confirm the published file path matches the URL, including letter case and any directory prefix.
The image works in one browser but not on the site
- Use an HTTPS image URL on an HTTPS page; HTTP assets can be blocked as mixed content.
- Inspect the browser’s developer console and network request to distinguish a missing file from an access denial or a browser security restriction.
- If delivery uses a CDN, verify that its origin points to the right object and that the path being requested is the path stored at the origin.
The old version keeps appearing
A browser or CDN may still have a cached copy. Use a new versioned filename when replacing a published asset, then update the page to point to that filename. Review the CDN’s cache behavior if you need a particular refresh policy.
A host rejects an upload or changes availability
Check file limits, account quota, acceptable-use rules, and commercial-use restrictions for the specific service. For repository hosting, remember that documented restrictions apply to certain commercial or quota-heavy uses. For a consumer photo account, provider policies can affect uploads or access; it should not be treated as guaranteed website infrastructure without checking those terms.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a screenshot image of a webpage rather than a place to store an image you already have, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a general-purpose image host: save or otherwise serve the returned file from your own hosting destination if you need a persistent image URL.
