In the WordPress block editor, highlight a word or phrase by selecting it, opening the Rich Text toolbar’s More options menu, and choosing Highlight. Pick a text color and background color, then check the result for readability.
Highlight selected words in the block editor
- Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor.
- Select the word or phrase you want to emphasize.
- In the Rich Text toolbar, open More options—the control for additional text-formatting commands.
- Choose Highlight.
- Set the selected text color and background color offered by the Highlight control.
- Review the contrast in the editor and on the published page. If WordPress displays a readability warning, choose a clearer color combination.
The exact toolbar arrangement can vary with the WordPress version, the selected block, and the theme. If you do not see Highlight immediately, confirm that text is selected and look inside the toolbar’s additional-options menu.
What the Highlight control changes
Highlight is an inline format: it affects only the selected characters, such as one term in a paragraph. It does not recolor the entire paragraph, heading, list, or other block.

Use Highlight when a single word or phrase needs visual emphasis without changing the rest of the block.

Block colors
To change the appearance of a whole paragraph or another block, select that block and open its color settings in the block sidebar or block toolbar. Depending on the block and theme, those settings may include text color, background color, or both. The available controls are not identical for every block.

Make the highlight readable
- Choose a text/background combination that remains easy to read.
- Pay attention to WordPress’s editor warning if it says the selected colors may reduce readability.
- Check the published front end, because the theme can affect colors and presentation.
- Do not use color as the only way to communicate essential meaning; retain wording, labels, or other context that works without the color.
When custom code makes sense
For a developer-controlled design, WordPress documents a TextHighlight component that wraps matching strings in a <mark> element. Browsers provide default styling for <mark>, which a stylesheet can override. This is a development component, not a step that a typical post author needs to run.

WordPress’s block styling guidance separates block markup from its presentation. A reusable treatment should therefore be styled and checked in both the editor and the public front end. Do not assume that arbitrary HTML or inline styles will be accepted or displayed identically in every editor, theme, or configuration.
Do you need a plugin?
No. The built-in Highlight command is the simplest route for ordinary posts and pages. A plugin is worth considering only when the editor’s controls do not provide the treatment you need. The WordPress.org listing for RichText Extension describes marker options such as color, thickness, and opacity, but the listing alone does not establish that the plugin is required, compatible with every installation, or maintained at a particular level. Verify its current compatibility and maintenance information before activating it.

Troubleshooting
Highlight is missing
- Select text inside a rich-text-capable block before opening the toolbar menu.
- Open More options; the command may be nested there rather than displayed as a separate icon.
- Check whether the selected block, editor version, or theme changes which rich-text controls are available.
The whole paragraph changed instead
You used block color settings rather than inline Highlight. Undo the change, select only the characters you want to emphasize, and use the Rich Text toolbar’s Highlight command.
The published color looks different
Inspect the page on the front end. Theme styles can alter how colors appear, even when the editor preview looks acceptable. Choose a readable combination that works in the published design.

The highlight is hard to read
Replace the text/background pair and heed any readability warning shown by the editor. Emphasis is not useful if readers cannot distinguish the words.
