To hide a WhatsApp chat without using Archive, turn on Chat Lock, create a Secret Code, and enable Hide Locked Chats. The conversation remains saved, but it disappears from WhatsApp’s ordinary chat list and can be opened only through the hidden-chat search flow and device authentication.
Chat Lock is available for individual and group chats on current WhatsApp builds, although menu names and availability can vary by device, operating system, language, and rollout.
Chat Lock vs. Archive
Archive is mainly an organization feature: it removes a conversation from the main list but does not require authentication. Chat Lock is designed for privacy. It places the conversation in a protected area secured by your phone passcode, fingerprint, Face ID, Touch ID, or another supported authentication method. Meta also says locked-chat details are hidden from notifications.

How to lock a WhatsApp chat
First, lock the conversation. The wording may appear as Lock Chat or Chat Lock.
On Android
- Open WhatsApp and open the conversation.
- Tap the contact’s or group’s name at the top.
- Scroll to Chat Lock.
- Turn on the lock.
- Confirm with your fingerprint, face authentication, or device passcode when prompted.
On iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and open the conversation.
- Tap the contact’s or group’s name.
- Scroll to Lock Chat or Chat Lock.
- Turn it on.
- Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode.
If the option is not in the chat information screen, check WhatsApp Settings → Privacy. The Android and iPhone paths are also documented separately by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
How to hide the Locked Chats folder
Chat Lock alone may leave a visible Locked Chats folder in the chat list. To hide that folder:

- Open Locked Chats.
- Open its settings or three-dot menu.
- Choose Chat Lock settings, or the equivalent option.
- Select Secret Code.
- Create a memorable code. Depending on your version, this may be a word, phrase, number combination, or emoji sequence.
- Turn on Hide Locked Chats and confirm.
WhatsApp’s published setup route is Locked Chats → Settings → Secret Code. Do not reuse a phone unlock PIN that another person knows, and store the code somewhere safe if you might forget it.
How to find hidden chats again
- Open WhatsApp and go to the main chat list.
- Tap the WhatsApp search field.
- Enter the exact Secret Code, including capitalization, spaces, or emojis if applicable.
- Open the hidden locked-chat area that appears.
- Authenticate if WhatsApp requests it.
Searching for the contact’s name normally is not the retrieval method once the locked chats are hidden. You need the Secret Code in WhatsApp’s search field.
How to unhide or unlock a chat
Temporarily access it
Enter the Secret Code in WhatsApp search, open the hidden area, and authenticate. This lets you read the conversation without removing its protection.

Make the folder visible again
Open the locked-chat settings and turn off Hide Locked Chats. The chat remains locked, but the Locked Chats folder becomes visible.

Remove Chat Lock permanently
Open the locked conversation, open the contact or group information screen, choose Chat Lock or Lock Chat, and turn it off. Authenticate when prompted. The conversation should return to the normal chat list.
What happens to notifications?
Chat Lock hides the sender and message contents from notifications for locked conversations. However, your phone may still show a generic WhatsApp alert, notification count, or other activity indicator. It is not a guarantee that no notification trace will appear.

For stronger privacy, review both WhatsApp’s notification settings and your operating system’s lock-screen settings. On iPhone, check WhatsApp notification previews and iOS lock-screen previews. On Android, check WhatsApp notification categories, lock-screen notification privacy, and notification-preview settings.
If Chat Lock or Hide Locked Chats is missing
- Update WhatsApp through the official Google Play Store or App Store.
- Restart WhatsApp and your phone.
- Confirm that the phone has a passcode or biometric authentication configured.
- Open the chat’s contact or group information screen instead of relying on a long-press menu.
- Check WhatsApp Settings → Privacy for related controls.
- Test the feature with a standard one-to-one conversation.
If the option remains absent, your account, app build, device, or feature rollout may not currently support it. Avoid unofficial modified apps such as GBWhatsApp; they add account, malware, privacy, and update risks.
Common problems
The chat is still visible
You may have enabled Chat Lock but not Hide Locked Chats. Check the locked-chat settings, then return to the main list. Also make sure you are not viewing a search result, shortcut, or contact screen rather than the ordinary chat list.

The Secret Code does not work
Enter it in WhatsApp’s search field, not the contact-name field. Check capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and emoji order. Confirm that the conversation was actually locked and that Hide Locked Chats was enabled.
You forgot the Secret Code
Be cautious with any recovery option mentioning clear, reset, or unlock and clear. The exact behavior varies by app version, and clearing locked chats may delete their messages and media. Read the warning shown in your app before confirming anything; do not assume a reset is harmless.
Which WhatsApp privacy feature should you use?
- Archive: Use it to tidy up an inactive chat, not to protect sensitive messages.
- Chat Lock: Use it to protect selected individual or group conversations with device authentication.
- Chat Lock plus Secret Code: Use it when you also want the Locked Chats folder removed from the ordinary list.
- App Lock: Use it to protect WhatsApp as a whole rather than selected chats.
- Disappearing Messages: Use them to make messages vanish after a chosen period. They do not hide a chat from the list.
- View Once: Use it for selected photos and videos that should disappear after being opened.
- Device and system protection: Use a strong phone passcode and supported app-hiding or app-locking controls when you need broader protection.

Hide Locked Chats means hidden from WhatsApp’s ordinary chat list—not invisible everywhere. Someone who knows the Secret Code may be able to find the chats. Someone using an already-unlocked WhatsApp session may also access information available in that session. Linked devices and companion sessions may not behave identically, so check the current app before relying on Chat Lock for high-risk privacy.
Chat Lock does not erase screenshots, forwarded messages, exported media, saved files, backups, or copies held on another device. It also does not hide the WhatsApp app itself. It protects access to selected conversations on the phone where you configure it.
