Important: These instructions apply only to the legacy consumer Skype desktop app. Microsoft retired consumer Skype on May 5, 2025, so the setting may no longer be available in an installed copy of Skype.
In an older Skype build, open More (…) > Settings > Appearance, find Enable Today tab under Navigation, and switch it Off to hide the tab or On to show it again.
What the Skype Today tab was
The Today tab was a navigation item in the former consumer Skype desktop interface. It displayed news, trends, or other current content inside Skype rather than being part of the core chat and calling view.
This was a Skype preference—not a Windows 11 setting. Windows Settings, Widgets, Microsoft Start, and Microsoft Edge do not control the Skype Today tab.

How to hide the Today tab
If you still have an older Skype desktop installation and the option is present, follow these steps:
- Open Skype.
- Click the More (…) button beside your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Appearance in the left sidebar.
- Under Navigation, find Enable Today tab.
- Turn the toggle Off.
The Today item should disappear from Skype’s navigation pane. This only changes the tab’s visibility; it does not uninstall Skype, delete messages, block news elsewhere in Windows, or change Windows 11 Widgets.

How to unhide the Today tab

- Open More (…) > Settings > Appearance.
- Scroll to the Navigation section.
- Set Enable Today tab to On.
The tab may return immediately or after you go back to Skype’s main window. A restart should not be assumed to be required.
What if “Enable Today tab” is missing?
A missing toggle does not necessarily mean that Windows 11 is malfunctioning. It usually indicates that the installed application is not the legacy Skype build described above, or that the feature is no longer available.

Check these possibilities:
- You are using a different Skype build or a web version.
- You are using Skype for Business, which is a separate product.
- You are using Microsoft Teams or another Microsoft communications app.
- The old installation is incomplete, damaged, unsupported, or affected by Skype’s retirement.
- You are confusing Skype’s former Today tab with Windows 11 Widgets, Microsoft Start, or news shown in Edge.
You can identify the installed application under Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, but reinstalling Skype is not a guaranteed way to restore the setting or service.

Does this work in current Skype?
Not as a supported, current Skype customization. Microsoft says consumer Skype was retired on May 5, 2025. The historical instructions may still describe an old installation or screenshots of the former app, but they should not be treated as a feature available on every Windows 11 PC.

What former Skype users should do now
Microsoft directs former consumer Skype users to Microsoft Teams Free. Signing in with Skype credentials was intended to transfer eligible Skype contacts and chats, although Teams Free is not an identical replacement for Skype’s interface and does not recreate the Today tab.
If you need old conversations or media, check Microsoft’s official Skype data export and deletion page. Microsoft previously stated that export availability was extended through June 2026; that date has passed, so do not assume that historic data can still be exported. Check the live Microsoft page for the options currently available to your account.

- Do not use registry edits or command-line switches that are not documented by a reliable source.
- Do not download modified Skype installers, unofficial patches, or “Skype replacement” utilities just to remove one navigation item.
- Do not change Windows 11 Widgets or Personalization settings expecting them to control Skype’s former Today tab.
Bottom line
On the legacy Skype desktop app, the historical path was More (…) > Settings > Appearance > Navigation > Enable Today tab. Turn it off to hide the tab or on to restore it. Because consumer Skype was retired on May 5, 2025, a missing setting is now expected in many installations; use Microsoft’s Teams Free migration and current data-support pages instead of trying unsupported workarounds.
