For real privacy, use Private Space on a compatible Android 15-or-newer phone or Secure Folder on a supported Samsung Galaxy device. If you only want an icon out of sight, use your phone’s launcher to hide it. Launcher hiding is cosmetic: it does not protect the app’s data or make the app invisible in Settings.
Before you start: hiding an icon vs. protecting an app
“Hide an app” can mean three different things:

Android does not have one universal “hide any app” control. The available options depend on your Android version, phone manufacturer, launcher, user profile and, in some cases, device-management policies.
Method 1: Use Android Private Space
Best for: compatible Pixel and other Android phones running Android 15 or later when you want a separate lock and stronger separation than a hidden icon.
Google says Private Space requires Android 15 or later plus compatible hardware and configuration. It may be unavailable on managed devices, supervised accounts, secondary or guest profiles, or devices with more than four users or profiles. A manufacturer can also disable the feature. Set up Private Space
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Tap Private space.
- Authenticate if prompted, then tap Set up.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Choose Use separate lock, if offered, and create a different PIN, pattern, password or biometric unlock method.
Menu wording can vary by manufacturer. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for “Private space.”
Install an app in Private Space
- Open the app drawer.
- Scroll to Private space at the bottom.
- Unlock it.
- Tap Install, or open the Google Play version inside Private Space.
- Install the app and sign in.
Private Space normally creates a separate installation or profile instance; it does not simply move the existing app and its data. You may need to sign in again, and the private copy may not share files, accounts or settings with the copy in your main profile.
If you want only the protected copy, verify that the Private Space version has everything you need before uninstalling the ordinary main-profile version. Removing the main copy does not automatically transfer its data to Private Space.

- Open the app drawer and scroll to Private space.
- Unlock it.
- Tap the Settings icon beside Private Space.
- Under Hide, enable Hide private space when it’s locked.
- Lock Private Space.
When locked, Private Space apps can be hidden from the launcher and, according to Android documentation, from places such as Recents, notifications, Settings and apps in the normal profile. This is considerably stronger than hiding an icon with a launcher.

Private Space limitations
- Use a separate Google Account for stronger separation. Google recommends this because using the same account can expose synced photos, files, email, contacts, browsing history, saved passwords, app-download history and recommendations outside Private Space.
- It is not forensic invisibility. Google notes that Private Space can still be uncovered through methods such as Android Debug Bridge, device logs or apps capable of detecting its use.
- Backups differ. Private Space app data is not included in ordinary device backup and restore in the same way as main-profile app data.
- Widgets and shortcuts are restricted. Private Space apps cannot add normal home-screen widgets or shortcuts.
- VPN behavior matters. Google’s support documentation says Private Space apps bypass the device VPN. This may be important for work or privacy-focused VPN users.
- Forgotten credentials can be serious. A locked Private Space cannot be recovered through the ordinary unlock-factor recovery process if you forget its credential.
- Third-party launchers may not fully support it. Android launcher developers must implement Private Space behavior correctly for the container and its apps to appear and work properly.
Method 2: Use Samsung Secure Folder
Best for: supported Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets. Secure Folder provides a separately locked area for apps and personal content, and it can have a separate copy of an app for another account.
Samsung describes Secure Folder as a protected area for information, files, photos, videos and apps. Availability varies by Galaxy model and software version. If Secure Folder does not appear in Security and privacy settings, your device may not support it.
Set up Secure Folder
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy.
- Tap More security settings.
- Tap Secure Folder.
- Sign in with a Samsung account if requested.
- Choose a lock type and complete setup.
Samsung’s current instructions are available in its Secure Folder support guide. Labels and locations can differ between One UI versions.

Add an app to Secure Folder
- Open Secure Folder.
- Tap Add apps.
- Select an installed app or install a new copy from Google Play or Galaxy Store.
- Open the copy inside Secure Folder and sign in separately if necessary.
Adding an app to Secure Folder does not necessarily remove the ordinary copy outside it. If you want only the protected version, check that the Secure Folder copy has the accounts and files you need before removing the main-profile copy.

Hide Secure Folder itself
Depending on your One UI version, open Secure Folder, open its settings and turn off Show Secure Folder in Apps screen. You can also use the Secure Folder control in Settings. Samsung documents the show-and-hide controls in its Secure Folder documentation.
Hiding the Secure Folder icon does not make the feature impossible to discover. Notifications, recent-app behavior and other visible traces can vary according to your settings and One UI version. Keep the Secure Folder lock and account-recovery details safe.
Method 3: Hide an app with your launcher
Best for: removing an icon from the app drawer or keeping the home screen tidy. This is the simplest method, but it provides the weakest privacy.

Try these general steps
- Open the app drawer.
- Tap the launcher menu, three-dot button or App drawer settings.
- Look for Hide apps, Hidden apps or a similar option.
- Select the app.
- Save or apply the change.
The exact path depends on the manufacturer and launcher. Some phones place the control in home-screen settings; some launchers do not offer it at all.

What launcher hiding does not do
A launcher-hidden app may still appear in Settings > Apps, system search, Google Play, notifications, the share sheet, widgets, shortcuts or another launcher. It can continue running in the background. Device-management and diagnostic tools may also see it.
Use launcher hiding for visual privacy or decluttering—not for protecting banking, messaging, dating, health or work data.
Disable a preinstalled app
Some built-in apps can be disabled:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app.
- Tap Disable, if the button is available.
- Confirm.
Disabling can remove the icon and stop the app from functioning, but it is generally unavailable for downloaded apps. Disabling a core system app can break dependent features, so use this only when you understand what the app does.
If “Hide apps” or Private Space is unavailable
- Check your Android version. Private Space requires Android 15 or later and is not guaranteed on every Android 15 device.
- Search Settings. Look for “Private space” or “Secure Folder.”
- Check the launcher settings. Search the app drawer or home-screen settings for “Hide apps.”
- Check device management. Work, school and supervised devices can restrict private-space features.
- Try disabling only eligible preinstalled apps. If there is no Disable button, Android does not permit it through the normal interface.
- Avoid random app-hider utilities. Calculator-vault and similar apps may request broad permissions and can create privacy, compatibility, reliability or data-loss risks. If you consider one, examine its permissions, developer reputation, update history and privacy policy carefully.
Which method should you use?

- Pixel or another compatible Android 15-or-newer phone: Try Private Space first.
- Samsung Galaxy: Try Secure Folder first.
- Older Android phone: Use the manufacturer’s launcher hiding feature if available, but treat it as cosmetic.
- Two accounts or app instances: Use Private Space or Secure Folder.
- Banking or messaging privacy: Use a protected container, not launcher hiding.
- Stop an app from running: Disable it if Android permits it; hiding the icon does not stop background activity.
How to unhide or restore an app
Launcher-hidden app
Open the launcher’s Hide apps or Hidden apps list, deselect the app and apply the change.

Private Space
Open or unhide Private Space, unlock it and access the app from the private container. If the app drawer does not show Private Space, return to Settings and search for Private space. Remember that forgetting its separate credential may leave the space inaccessible.
Secure Folder
Turn on Show Secure Folder in Apps screen in Secure Folder’s settings or through the relevant Settings menu, then unlock the container.
Disabled system app
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Find the disabled app; you may need to filter or sort the list.
- Tap Enable.
What “hidden” really protects against
A hidden icon can deter a casual user who is browsing the home screen. It does not protect against someone using an unlocked phone and checking Settings, notifications, accounts, app stores or system search.
Recommended Free Tools
Private Space and Secure Folder provide a stronger boundary because they add authentication and separate app environments. They still should not be treated as absolute secrecy: technical tools, device logs, management software or forensic examination may reveal that a protected space or app exists.
