For apps, use Private Space on a supported Android 15-or-later phone, or Secure Folder on a compatible Samsung Galaxy. For photos and videos, use Locked Folder in Google Photos; for documents and downloads, use Safe folder in Files by Google. Hiding an icon or renaming a file is only cosmetic: it does not reliably protect the content itself.

Choose the right secure hiding method

“Securely hidden” usually means keeping content away from someone casually browsing an unlocked phone or from ordinary apps and system views. It does not mean guaranteed invisibility to a device administrator, malware, debugging tools, or forensic access. Choose a tool based on what you want to protect:

What you want to hide Recommended tool Availability and important limits
Apps and their private data Android Private Space Android 15 or later on supported devices. It may be unavailable on managed or supervised devices and in some user/profile configurations.
Apps and files on a Galaxy Samsung Secure Folder Only on supported Galaxy devices; menus and features vary by model, carrier, and software version.
Documents, PDFs, and downloads Files by Google Safe folder Android 8.0 or later. It does not hold apps, provide Google Drive backup, or let other apps open protected files.
Photos and videos Google Photos Locked Folder Android 6 or later. It uses the device screen lock, not a separate Locked Folder password.
An app icon only Launcher or app settings Cosmetic concealment only; the app’s data may remain accessible elsewhere.

Hide apps with Android Private Space

Check that your phone supports it

Private Space is an Android 15 feature, but Android version alone does not guarantee availability: device makers can disable it and administrators can restrict it. Google documents restrictions involving managed devices, supervised accounts, guest or secondary users, and devices with more than four users or profiles. If the option is missing, search Settings for “Private space”; on a work- or school-managed phone, use the organization’s approved storage policy rather than trying to bypass controls.

Set up a separate lock

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security & privacy, then Private space. Labels can differ by manufacturer and Android build; if needed, search Settings for “Private space.”
  3. Authenticate with the phone’s existing screen lock and tap Set up.
  4. Choose a separate lock if offered, then create a different PIN, pattern, or supported biometric method. A strong, distinct PIN is preferable when the content is high-risk.
  5. Consider using a separate Google Account in Private Space. Apps signed into the same account can otherwise sync data or notifications across profiles.

Google’s consumer setup guide is at Android.com; its detailed restrictions and behavior are in Google Android Help.

Install the app inside Private Space

  1. Open All Apps and scroll to Private space.
  2. Unlock it and tap + Install, or choose the available option to install an app there.
  3. Install the app again and sign in. Private Space creates a new app instance; it does not move the main-profile app or copy its data, settings, or login.
  4. If the app should no longer be available in the ordinary profile, uninstall its main-profile copy when appropriate. Recreate settings, re-download offline content, and configure notifications in the private instance as needed.

Before moving messaging, contact, VPN, password-manager, or authentication apps, confirm that you can safely re-establish their data and access. Their information does not automatically transfer from the main profile.

Hide the Private Space entry when locked

  1. In All Apps, scroll to Private space and unlock it.
  2. Tap the Settings icon beside Private Space.
  3. Under Hide, turn on Hide private space when it’s locked, if that option is available.
  4. Lock Private Space. The entry disappears when locked and becomes visible again after authentication.

Hiding the entry reduces casual discovery; it does not guarantee that the feature cannot be detected by an administrator, certain apps, device logs, or a computer connected through ADB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move files only when your device supports it

File transfer into Private Space is version- and device-dependent. Android’s consumer guide describes an Add files shortcut, while the Android Open Source Project documents system file transfer from outside Private Space on Android 16 QPR2 and later, subject to device support. On those documented builds, transferred files go to Private Space’s Downloads folder. Do not assume every Android 15 phone has this feature.

  1. Unlock Private Space and look for Add files.
  2. Select the files and choose Move, not Copy, if the original should no longer remain in the main profile.
  3. Wait for the transfer to finish. Check the main Gallery, Files app, Downloads, and search results for the original or duplicates.
  4. Lock Private Space and confirm that the private files are no longer available in the ordinary profile.

See the Android Open Source Project Private Space documentation for the Android 16 QPR2 file-transfer qualification.

Hide apps and files on Samsung Galaxy with Secure Folder

Set up Secure Folder and add an app

Secure Folder is Samsung’s protected container for apps and files, including separate instances of Samsung Gallery and My Files. It is not available on every Galaxy device.

  1. Open Settings and search for Secure Folder if you do not know its location in your software version.
  2. Open Secure Folder and follow the setup prompts.
  3. Choose a lock method, preferably a credential different from the phone’s main PIN if offered.
  4. Add or install the app inside Secure Folder and sign in to that separate instance.
  5. If you do not want the app available outside the container, remove its ordinary copy from the main profile where appropriate.
  6. Use Secure Folder’s settings or the Apps screen controls to hide its shortcut, if available.

Samsung notes that screens and settings vary by carrier and software version; consult its Secure Folder support page for model-specific directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move files into the container

  1. Open Secure Folder, then open Gallery or My Files inside it.
  2. Use the add, import, or move command to place the file in Secure Folder.
  3. Check the main Gallery and My Files to confirm the original is no longer visible there.
  4. Lock Secure Folder when finished, then check recent-apps thumbnails and notification previews before handing over the phone.

Secure Folder apps have their own profile context. They may need separate sign-ins and permissions for contacts, files, or notifications; do not assume main-profile data is shared automatically.

Locking behavior on current Galaxy software

Samsung says the Each time I leave an app auto-lock option was removed starting with Android 16 and One UI 8. Do not rely on that older setting being present. Use the lock and auto-lock controls available on your model, and manually lock Secure Folder before lending someone an unlocked phone. Some models or software versions may also offer enhanced encryption, but this is not universal.

Hide documents and downloads with Files by Google Safe folder

Set up the folder and move files

  1. Open Files by Google on Android 8.0 or later.
  2. Scroll to Collections and tap Safe folder.
  3. Choose a PIN or Pattern, create it, and confirm it.
  4. Find a document or download. Touch and hold it or open its More menu, then select Move to Safe folder.
  5. Authenticate with the Safe folder PIN or pattern and wait for the move to finish before closing the folder or switching apps.

Google says Safe folder items do not appear in search results or categories, and third-party apps cannot open them directly. Installed apps cannot be moved into it. Files cannot be shared or backed up to Google Drive from inside Safe folder, and screenshots are blocked there.

Understand its recovery and storage limits

Forgetting the PIN or pattern prevents access; resetting Safe folder permanently deletes its contents. Do not clear Files by Google’s app storage or cache, manually copy its protected data to another phone, or use an SD card containing Safe folder files from another phone: Google warns these actions can corrupt or permanently lose files. Safe folder is also not a substitute for full-device security; Google notes that unauthorized access to internal storage may still expose data. Keep an independent, appropriately protected backup of irreplaceable documents if losing them would be worse than the additional exposure of a backup.

Hide photos and videos with Google Photos Locked Folder

Move items into Locked Folder

  1. Open Google Photos and tap Collections, then Locked.
  2. Tap Set up Locked Folder and authenticate with the device screen lock.
  3. Select a photo or video, tap Add or the relevant action, then choose Move to Locked Folder.
  4. Confirm Move. Check for duplicate or edited versions separately.

Locked Folder is available on Android 6 and later. It removes items from the Photos grid, memories, search, albums, and other apps with photo access. It uses the phone’s screen lock, so anyone who knows that credential can open it; there is no separate Locked Folder password. Google Photos Archive is not a substitute: archived items can remain discoverable in search or other areas.

Choose between device-only storage and backup

If Locked Folder backup is off, its contents remain on the device and may be lost if the phone is damaged, lost, factory-reset, or if Photos is uninstalled or its data is cleared. If backup is on, items can be accessed on other devices signed into the account and count toward Google storage. That improves recovery but creates more access points and copies. Choose based on whether local isolation or recoverability matters more for those files.

Moving an item does not move every related copy. Check separately for edited versions, duplicates, Trash copies, files saved by another person, and copies shared with recipients. Sharing a protected item may require moving it out of Locked Folder first.

What not to use for serious privacy

  • Renaming extensions or adding a dot to a folder: this can change what appears in some views, but does not provide a protected, separately locked space.
  • Launcher-only app hiding or disabling: it changes visibility or availability in that launcher, not necessarily the app’s stored data, notifications, or copies elsewhere.
  • Google Photos Archive: it is an organizing feature, not the protected Locked Folder.
  • Unverified “vault” apps or APKs: security, permissions, advertising, backup, and recovery behavior vary. Avoid granting broad access to an app you have not independently vetted, especially for high-risk content.

Verify that the content is no longer exposed

After moving an app or file, lock the protected space and check the ordinary phone as someone borrowing it might. A file that was copied rather than moved, or that exists in another app or cloud account, can still be exposed.

  • Check the main app drawer, Settings > Apps, launcher search, widgets, and recent apps for the ordinary app instance or shortcut.
  • Review notification content and lock-screen previews for both the main and private app instances.
  • Check the main Gallery, file manager, Downloads, and system search for originals and duplicates.
  • For photos, review Google Photos search, albums, memories, Trash, and shared locations; also check edited versions and files saved by recipients.
  • Review messaging apps, email attachments, browser downloads, cloud services, and shared albums for other copies.
  • Check photo pickers and share sheets while the private container is locked, then confirm the behavior again after unlocking. Private content may be available through supported sharing or picker interfaces while Private Space is unlocked.
  • For a suspected transfer failure, wait for the operation to complete and search by filename, date, and thumbnail. Lock the container, reboot if the launcher appears stale, and recheck ordinary views.

Private Space has documented sharing behavior: some sharing and picker interfaces can expose its content while unlocked, and locked content is removed from relevant interfaces. Google documents Bluetooth sharing from private apps in supported cases, while receiving Bluetooth content into Private Space is restricted. This is not a promise that all apps or devices behave identically.

Backups, forgotten locks, and recovery

Decide how you will recover files before moving the only copy. These tools have different failure consequences:

  • Files by Google Safe folder: forgetting its PIN or pattern can leave files inaccessible; resetting the folder permanently deletes them. It has no Google Drive backup from within the folder.
  • Google Photos Locked Folder: with backup off, device loss, damage, reset, or Photos app-data removal can make items unrecoverable. With backup on, check the same account on another signed-in device if an item is missing; cloud availability also means another copy exists outside the phone.
  • Private Space and Secure Folder apps: a separate app instance may not contain the main instance’s data. Confirm account recovery, app-specific backup, and sign-in access before uninstalling the ordinary copy.

Do not treat “no backup” as automatically safer when the files are irreplaceable IDs, family records, or evidence. A second, well-protected copy can be more important than minimizing copies; weigh that against who can access the backup account.

Limits of securely hiding content

Private Space and Secure Folder are the strongest built-in choices here for separating apps, while Locked Folder and Safe folder address specific types of files. They are designed to reduce ordinary exposure, not defeat every attacker. Google explicitly says Private Space may be detectable by people who install apps, certain apps, computers connected through ADB, or device logs. A managed-device administrator, rooted access, malware, forensic extraction, or someone with physical access and sufficient technical ability may also exceed what a hidden container can protect against.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a strong main screen-lock PIN, keep Android and apps updated, avoid untrusted vault apps, and disable sensitive notification previews. Biometrics are convenient, but their legal and practical treatment can depend on circumstances; for high-risk material, use a strong PIN and do not assume face or fingerprint unlock is universally stronger.
