The easiest free option is uBlock Origin with a cookie-notice filter list such as AdGuard/uBO – Cookie Notices or EasyList/uBO – Cookie Notices. This can remove many cookie banners, but hiding a banner is not always the same as rejecting optional cookies or stopping every tracker.
What “Accept Cookies” messages mean
Cookie banners ask for permission to store cookies and use related technologies. Some cookies are necessary for sign-ins, shopping carts, security, subscriptions, and saved preferences. Others support analytics, advertising, personalization, or cross-site tracking.
Privacy rules generally require websites to explain nonessential cookies and provide an appropriate way to consent or refuse them. Therefore, a banner blocker may change how you interact with the request, but it does not automatically make every cookie unnecessary or harmful. See the ICO’s cookie guidance.

The quickest free solution: uBlock Origin
Use this method if you want broad ad, tracker, popup, and nuisance filtering as well as fewer cookie banners.
- Install uBlock Origin from your browser’s official extension store or the project’s official page.
- Open the uBlock Origin dashboard from the extension’s toolbar icon.
- Open Filter lists.
- Find the cookie-notice or annoyance-related lists. If the section is not obvious, search the page for cookie.
- Enable AdGuard/uBO – Cookie Notices and/or EasyList/uBO – Cookie Notices, when available.
- Click Apply changes, update the lists if prompted, and reload the website.
Mozilla currently recommends this approach because Firefox’s former built-in Cookie Banner Blocker is no longer available. Filter-list names and locations can vary by browser, language, and uBlock Origin version.
uBlock Origin relies on maintained filter rules, cosmetic filtering, and network filtering. Its rules may hide a banner, block a consent script, or prevent related requests. Coverage is not universal: websites use different consent platforms, custom code, regions, and page layouts.
Firefox: do not rely on the old built-in blocker
Firefox introduced a Cookie Banner Blocker in version 120, which could decline supported banners by setting an opt-out cookie or activating a decline control. Mozilla’s current support documentation says that feature is no longer available as a general built-in solution.

For current Firefox desktop use, install uBlock Origin and enable the cookie-notice filters described above. The uBlock Origin project says it works best on Firefox and remains available for Firefox desktop and Android, subject to the browser’s extension support.
Chrome and Edge: Do Not Track will not remove banners
Chrome’s Do Not Track setting is only a request to websites. It does not hide cookie messages, and Google says that many websites do not change their behavior in response.
To find it in Chrome, open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies → Send a “Do not track” request with your browsing traffic.
For actual banner handling, use a compatible content blocker with cookie-notice filters or a consent-management extension. Check current browser-store availability before installing: the official uBlock Origin project page states that its Chrome Web Store listing was scheduled for removal on August 31, 2026. Availability and supported extension variants can change, particularly in Chromium-based browsers.

Edge users should likewise check the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store and the extension’s official documentation rather than assuming that a Chrome listing or feature works identically in Edge.

Safari: use Distraction Control for visual removal
On supported Safari versions, Apple’s Distraction Control can hide regularly appearing webpage elements.
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Open the Page menu.
- Choose Hide Distracting Items, or the equivalent Distraction Control command.
- Select the cookie banner or overlay.
- Repeat if the website recreates the element.
This is primarily a visual workaround. It may hide the message without submitting a “Reject all” choice. Safari content blockers and consent-management extensions are separate controls; manage them through Safari’s website and extension settings.

Consent-O-Matic
Consent-O-Matic attempts to fill supported consent dialogs according to your chosen preferences rather than merely hiding them. Its project documentation says it supports more than 200 consent-management platforms, stores settings in the browser, and reports the visited site URL to an Aarhus University service. Install it from an official browser store or the project’s official page, and review its permissions before use.

Adblock Plus Premium advertises cookie-consent pop-up blocking and says it can reject cookies where possible while accepting only cookies required for access. Its buying page showed $4 per month or $40 per year on August 18, 2026; taxes, region, currency, and promotions may change the final price.

AdBlock Ninja Premium advertises cookie-banner blocking alongside tracker, notification, floating-video, and other controls. Its page showed $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year on August 18, 2026. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee of coverage on every website.
Does hiding a cookie banner reject cookies?
Not necessarily. There are four different outcomes:
- Cosmetic hiding: removes the overlay from view but may not send any preference.
- Automatic clicking: activates a visible Reject, Decline, or equivalent control.
- Opt-out signaling: sets a consent or opt-out cookie where the tool knows how.
- Request blocking: prevents some scripts or tracking requests from loading.
These actions overlap but are not interchangeable. A website can still have tracking or other storage mechanisms after a banner disappears. Adblock Plus documents product-specific rejection behavior, but that behavior should not be generalized to every extension or filter list.
When “Reject all” is not available
Some websites offer only Accept, Agree, or an accept-or-pay choice. A blocker cannot reliably create a genuine rejection option when the site does not expose one.

Look for Manage preferences, Privacy settings, a footer privacy link, or a cookie-settings link. If declining is impossible and privacy matters more than access, leave the site rather than assuming that hiding the dialog changed the site’s consent state.

- Open the blocker’s toolbar panel while viewing the affected site.
- Temporarily disable filtering for that site.
- Reload the page and complete the site’s controls manually.
- Re-enable filtering afterward.
- If the problem continues, clear that site’s cookies and storage, then visit it again.
uBlock Origin supports temporary per-site changes and permanent site-specific exceptions. Its documentation explains that using the padlock control makes a changed site setting permanent. Avoid disabling JavaScript globally as a first fix; many ordinary websites will stop working.
Why banners keep returning
- The site did not save the preference.
- Your browser clears cookies or site data when it closes.
- Private browsing resets stored consent.
- The consent platform or page markup changed.
- A filter rule is outdated.
- You are using separate browser profiles or devices.
- Third-party cookies or storage are blocked in a way the site cannot handle.
Should you block all cookies?
Usually not as your first step. Global cookie blocking can break account sign-ins, shopping carts, subscriptions, saved settings, embedded services, and security checks. Google and MDN both document functionality trade-offs from restricting third-party cookies; USAGov also warns that blocking cookies can adversely affect websites.
A more practical progression is:
- Use a consent tool to reject optional cookies where possible.
- Consider blocking third-party cookies if you accept possible breakage.
- Allow cookies selectively for sites that need them.
- Clear a site’s data or reset its permissions when it becomes unusable.
Remember the distinction: banner blocking changes what you see or how a consent dialog is handled; cookie blocking changes whether the browser stores or sends cookies; tracker blocking targets known tracking requests. None of these controls alone proves that all tracking has stopped.
Mobile browser limitations
Mobile browsers generally offer fewer extension and filter controls than desktop browsers. Safari on iPhone and iPad, Chrome on iOS, and Android browsers do not necessarily support the same extensions, filter lists, or page controls as their desktop versions. Check compatibility for your exact browser and operating system before choosing a tool.
Privacy and safety checklist
- Install extensions only from an official browser store or the developer’s official page.
- Review requested permissions before installation.
- Prefer established or open-source projects when their code and documentation are relevant to your trust decision.
- Keep filter lists and extensions updated.
- Review site-specific exceptions periodically.
- Do not assume a hidden banner means that optional cookies were rejected.
- Remember that banners are only one part of a website’s tracking and storage behavior.
- Avoid unofficial, repackaged, cracked, or manually injected extensions.
The Bottom Line
For most desktop users, start with uBlock Origin and a cookie-notice filter list. Choose Consent-O-Matic when explicit consent automation matters more than simple visual removal, and treat Safari’s Distraction Control as a hiding tool—not proof that cookies were rejected.
