If you still have your old phone, transfer the RuneScape entry in your authenticator app and test a code before wiping the old device. If the old phone is gone, the next step depends on your account: a legacy RuneScape account can use its registered email to disable the authenticator, while a Jagex Account can use a saved backup code or restore a synced authenticator. These are different recovery systems, so identify your account type first.
First, identify your account type
The recovery steps depend on whether you use a legacy RuneScape account or a Jagex Account—not on whether your new phone is an iPhone or Android.
- Legacy RuneScape account: The authenticator is managed in RuneScape account settings. If you cannot transfer it, the “Lost your authenticator?” option sends a disabling link to the account’s registered email.
- Jagex Account: Two-step authentication is managed through the Jagex Account system. It can use an authenticator app and/or email security codes, and it supports backup codes. Follow Jagex’s separate Jagex Account two-step authentication process.
If you are unsure which account system you use, check how you normally sign in and which account-management page you use. Do not use the legacy-account disable procedure as a substitute for Jagex Account recovery.

If you still have the old phone, transfer the authenticator first
Keep the old phone intact until the RuneScape code works on the new one. A transfer or restore may depend on the app’s sync or backup settings, and not every setup moves automatically. Jagex identifies Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as common choices; it also mentions Authy, but app-specific migration steps depend on that provider. The authenticator app is not made by Jagex, so contact its provider if its own backup or transfer is failing.

Google Authenticator
If your codes were synced to a Google Account, install Google Authenticator on the new phone and sign in to that same account; synced codes may then appear. Sync is not automatic for every setup. If you need to transfer manually, Google’s current steps are:
- Install Google Authenticator on the new phone, open it, and tap Get started.
- On the old phone, open Google Authenticator, tap Menu, then choose Transfer accounts and Export accounts.
- Unlock the old phone, select the RuneScape entry, and tap Next. The old app displays a QR code.
- On the new phone, open Menu → Transfer accounts → Import accounts → Scan QR code, then scan the code shown on the old phone.
- Confirm that the RuneScape entry appears and test its code by signing in before removing the old app or resetting the old phone.
Manual export requires access to the old device and a current version of the app. See Google’s transfer and sync instructions.

Microsoft Authenticator on iPhone
Microsoft’s iOS backup requires iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup to be enabled, with Authenticator enabled in the device’s iCloud saved-app settings. Open Authenticator at least once on the old iPhone before changing devices. On the new iPhone, restore using the same recovery setup and check that the RuneScape entry is present before erasing the old phone. If the restore option does not appear, Microsoft advises updating the app and reinstalling it on the new device.
Microsoft Authenticator backup cannot be restored across device types: an iOS backup will not restore to Android, and an Android backup will not restore to iOS. If you are switching platforms, plan to register the RuneScape authenticator again rather than relying on that backup. Microsoft’s new-phone transfer guidance explains the limitation. The same-platform restriction does not apply to Google Authenticator’s documented manual QR transfer, though that still requires access to the old device.

If the old phone is lost or unusable
Choose the route for your account type. If the phone is damaged but its authenticator still syncs to a cloud account, try restoring that app first. If there is no usable transfer or backup, use the relevant account recovery option below.
Legacy RuneScape account: disable and set up the authenticator again
If you can access the account’s registered email, use the legacy recovery route rather than trying to recover an unbacked-up code generator:
- Open RuneScape account settings and choose “Lost your authenticator?” to request its removal.
- Open the disabling link sent to the registered email and complete the removal.
- Install Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on the new phone, then return to authenticator settings and select Enable Authenticator.
- Scan the displayed QR code. If scanning is unavailable, select Can’t scan the code? and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Enter the six-digit code from the new phone and test it by logging in.
Jagex’s legacy authenticator instructions describe the enable and disable flows. Disabling removes an authentication layer temporarily, so secure the registered email first and re-enable the authenticator as soon as access is restored.

Jagex Account: restore or use a backup code
First try restoring the authenticator app using the same cloud account or platform backup used on the old phone. Jagex says synced authenticator codes should appear after installing the app and signing in with the same account; this depends on the app’s sync or backup having been set up.
If the app cannot be restored, use a Jagex Account backup code if you have one. Jagex says an account can generate 10 codes; each is single-use and grants full account access when entered. At the verification prompt, choose Use one of your account’s backup codes and enter an unused code. Once signed in, set up the new authenticator and generate a replacement set if needed. Search your computer, cloud storage, or password manager for the exact filename Jagex – Backup Codes.txt, which Jagex says may contain saved codes. Follow the Jagex Account instructions for managing authentication and backup codes.
If the code is rejected or the recovery email is missing
Fix a rejected six-digit code
A time-based code can fail if the phone or computer clock is wrong. Jagex recommends checking that the phone and computer have the same time and time zone. Try these checks in order:

- Turn on automatic date and time and automatic time zone on the phone.
- Check the computer’s date, time, and time zone.
- Wait for a fresh code and enter it before it expires.
- Confirm you selected the RuneScape entry, not a different authenticator entry with a similar name.
- If a correctly synchronized code still fails, use the relevant transfer, disable, or account recovery route above.
See Jagex’s authenticator troubleshooting guidance.
Find the legacy account’s disabling email
For a legacy account, the disable message goes to the registered email, which may differ from the email used to log in. Jagex explains the distinction in its guide to login and registered email addresses. Check spam and junk folders, filters and rules, and whether you are signed in to the registered address. Jagex advises waiting about 15 minutes before treating a requested disable email as missing.
Make one disable request and wait for its message: a new request invalidates earlier disable links, even if the earlier email has not arrived. Use the newest link; if it does not open correctly, copy and paste it into a private or incognito browser window. If the link has expired or is invalid, request a fresh one and use that newest message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRecover the account if you cannot access the required email or backup
If you cannot access a legacy account’s registered email, start Jagex’s account recovery appeal. Enter the login username or login email, not the in-game display name, and explain that an active authenticator cannot be removed. Provide the ownership information requested. Jagex lists an active authenticator that you cannot remove as a reason to submit an appeal; if recovery succeeds, Jagex may update the registered email so you can continue recovery. Its login troubleshooting guide covers related routes.
If a Jagex Account’s backup codes were your only available sign-in method and you no longer have them, contact Jagex Support. Support may require ownership verification; do not assume recovery will be immediate or guaranteed.
Quick Recap
Protect the account during and after the move
- Keep the old phone until you have tested a code on the new one; if transfer fails, leave it available while you use the appropriate recovery route.
- Secure the email account associated with RuneScape or the Jagex Account before disabling authentication. Jagex warns that access to a legacy account’s registered email can allow someone to disable its authenticator; see its RuneScape security tips.
- Keep Jagex backup codes separate from the phone and treat them like account credentials: anyone who uses an unused code can gain full access. Never share a code or backup code with another person. See Jagex Account security tips.
- Use official RuneScape or Jagex account-management pages. Do not install unofficial “authenticator recovery” software or enter account details on pages sent by strangers.
- Only erase, trade in, or factory-reset the old phone after the new code has been tested and any replacement backup codes have been stored securely.
