Yes. Connect your WordPress form to an SMS provider such as Twilio, add an SMS action or feed, and choose whether the text goes to your team or the person who submitted the form. Gravity Forms, WPForms, and Formidable Forms document Twilio integrations, but the required license, setup steps, and supported workflows differ.

First decide who should receive the text

“Get SMS text messages from a WordPress form” can describe two different workflows:

  • Owner or staff alert: a fixed business number receives a notification after a submission.
  • Visitor confirmation: the submitter receives a text at the phone number entered in the form.

The documented integrations primarily cover outbound messages triggered by a submission. Formidable Forms also documents inbound text-to-form workflows for polls and surveys. Do not configure a visitor confirmation when your real requirement is an internal alert, or vice versa.

How the WordPress-to-SMS connection works

SMS is normally an integration between your form builder and a messaging provider, not a built-in capability of every WordPress form. The form plugin sends the submission data to Twilio (or another supported provider), and the provider sends the SMS.

  1. Install or enable the SMS add-on for your existing form plugin.
  2. Create or connect the provider account and enter the credentials requested by the add-on.
  3. Assign a sender number where the integration requires one.
  4. Add an SMS action or feed to the form.
  5. Choose a fixed staff recipient or map the visitor’s phone field.
  6. Write the message, add only the necessary merge fields, and set any conditions.
  7. Submit a controlled test and verify both the trigger and the destination.

Provider rules, geographic coverage, sender requirements, and delivery timing vary. The vendor documentation describes configuration and features, not an independently measured or guaranteed delivery rate.

Choose the integration that fits your form builder

Integration Documented capabilities License or setup notes
Gravity Forms + Twilio SMS after a form submission or payment completion; customizable text, merge tags, conditional sending, and optional Bitly URL shortening. The Twilio add-on page lists Pro, Elite, and Nonprofit licenses as including the integration. A separate tutorial covers credentials, sender and recipient numbers, message text, and conditions.
WPForms + Twilio SMS and WhatsApp notifications when a form is completed. The guide says to install and activate the add-on, connect Twilio in WPForms settings, and purchase a dedicated Twilio phone number for sending. The guide does not establish a current plan price.
Formidable Forms + Twilio SMS on submission or entry update, plus documented inbound text-to-form polls and surveys. The add-on requires a Business license or above. Setup includes a Twilio action under Form Actions & Notifications, API credentials, and geographic permissions. US sending requires A2P 10DLC registration according to the documentation.
Form Notify The WordPress.org listing describes SMS, email, and LINE notifications for supported form plugins. Confirm current compatibility, maintenance activity, supported builders, and provider setup before deploying it on a production site.

Use the form builder you already run unless its current add-on cannot meet your recipient, country, or inbound-SMS requirements. Switching builders solely to send a text is not automatically necessary.

Setup walkthrough for a Twilio-based notification

1. Check the add-on and license

Open the current documentation for your form plugin and verify that the SMS feature is available for your license. Gravity Forms lists Pro, Elite, and Nonprofit for its Twilio integration, while Formidable Forms specifies Business or higher. WPForms’ guide explains the add-on workflow but does not provide a durable price comparison.

2. Prepare the provider account

Create or connect the Twilio account, then enter the account details requested by the plugin. Some integrations also require an assigned Twilio phone number. Keep account credentials out of page content, emails, screenshots, and client-side scripts; use the provider’s current security guidance for storing and rotating them.

3. Add the SMS action

In the form’s notifications, feeds, or actions area, add the Twilio/SMS action. Formidable documents this under Form Actions & Notifications. WPForms instructs you to connect Twilio in its settings before enabling the notification. Gravity Forms’ tutorial shows the equivalent feed configuration.

4. Select the recipient

  • For an internal alert, enter a fixed, approved staff number.
  • For a confirmation, map the form’s phone field to the recipient field.
  • Check the field format and country code before sending; a text field that accepts arbitrary characters can produce invalid destinations.

Gravity Forms documents both custom numbers and form-field recipients in its SMS notification tutorial: SMS form notifications setup.

5. Write and condition the message

Keep the text short and include only what the recipient needs, such as the submitter’s name, reference number, or a safe link. Gravity Forms supports merge tags and conditional logic, and its documentation describes sending different messages based on form data. Do not place passwords, payment details, or other sensitive submission contents in an SMS.

6. Configure country and sender requirements

Review destination-country rules before launch. Formidable specifically documents geographic permissions and says US SMS sending requires A2P 10DLC registration. Sender eligibility and registration requirements can change by country, number type, and use case, so verify the provider’s current instructions for every destination you intend to text.

7. Test the complete path

Submit the form with a controlled test record, then confirm that the intended action ran, the correct number was selected, and the message content is accurate. Test both an internal alert and a visitor confirmation if you use both. A successful form submission alone does not prove that a carrier accepted or delivered the SMS.

Inbound SMS: when the text starts with the user

If you want people to text a number and have those messages create WordPress entries, that is an inbound workflow rather than a submission-triggered alert. Formidable’s Twilio materials describe text-in poll and survey entries: Formidable Twilio SMS features. Confirm the exact entry format, opt-in language, keyword handling, and country support before designing the workflow.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • No message is triggered: confirm the add-on is active, the action/feed is enabled, and its conditions match the test submission.
  • Wrong recipient: inspect whether the action uses a fixed number or a mapped phone field, and normalize the field’s country code.
  • Provider rejects the send: recheck credentials, the assigned sender number, geographic permissions, and any required US A2P 10DLC registration.
  • Message content is missing: verify merge-tag names and test with a field that is definitely populated.
  • Visitor did not consent: obtain appropriate permission before sending confirmations or other recurring texts, and provide the disclosures required for your audience and jurisdiction.

Which option should you use?

  • Choose Gravity Forms when you already use it and need conditional messages, payment-event triggers, or flexible recipient selection.
  • Choose WPForms when its documented SMS and WhatsApp notifications fit your existing forms and you are prepared to use a dedicated Twilio number.
  • Choose Formidable Forms when you need submission/update alerts or an inbound text-to-form workflow and can meet its Business-license and geographic requirements.
  • Evaluate Form Notify only after confirming current compatibility and maintenance for your specific form plugin.

For current implementation details, consult the vendor pages for Gravity Forms, WPForms, and Formidable Forms immediately before configuring a live site.
