Current LibreOffice includes a built-in Dark theme. Open Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Appearance on Windows or Linux, or LibreOffice > Preferences > LibreOffice > Appearance on macOS. Choose Dark, then decide whether the editing page should also be dark by changing Use white document background. LibreOffice 26.2.5 was the latest branch release checked on August 18, 2026; labels can change in later versions.
What “full dark mode” means in LibreOffice
LibreOffice has three separate appearance layers:
- Application theme: menus, toolbars, sidebars, dialogs, the Start Center and general window chrome.
- Document background: the Writer page, Calc sheet canvas or similar editing area.
- Icons: toolbar artwork controlled independently from the overall theme.
Therefore, “full” dark mode can mean a dark interface only, or a dark interface plus a dark editing canvas. It is primarily a viewing preference, not a command that permanently recolors every document.
The current controls are documented in LibreOffice’s Appearance settings.
Turn on LibreOffice Dark mode
Windows and Linux
- Open Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw or another LibreOffice module.
- Choose Tools > Options.
- Select LibreOffice > Appearance.
- Under LibreOffice Themes, choose Dark.
- Set Use white document background according to the result you want (see below).
- Select Apply or OK, then restart LibreOffice if requested.
macOS
- Open LibreOffice and choose LibreOffice > Preferences.
- Select LibreOffice > Appearance.
- Choose Dark under LibreOffice Themes.
- Enable or clear Use white document background.
- Apply the change and restart if prompted.
The macOS menu equivalent is described in the LibreOffice Writer Guide.

Choose between a dark canvas and a white page

Dark menus with a white document
Choose Dark and enable Use white document background. This is usually the most practical setup: interface glare is reduced while pages and sheets remain similar to their printed or exported appearance.
A genuinely dark editing canvas
Choose Dark and leave Use white document background disabled. Check documents containing explicitly black text, dark table fills, charts, borders or imported styles; those colors may not adapt for contrast.

Fix icons that are too dark or invisible
On the same Appearance page, change Icon themes separately. Try Automatic, a light variant, or a dark/high-contrast variant such as a dark Colibre, Breeze or Sifr option when available. Choices vary by operating system, Linux distribution and package; families include Breeze, Colibre, Elementary, Karasa Jaga, Sifr and Sukapura.
- Dark icons on a dark toolbar: choose a light or automatic variant.
- Washed-out icons on a light toolbar: try a dark variant.
- Toolbar not refreshed: restart LibreOffice.
- Only one module is affected: check its sidebar, notebookbar and rendering backend separately.
Automatic, Dark, Light and custom themes
Automatic follows the desktop environment where supported. Dark explicitly selects LibreOffice’s dark appearance, while Light selects the light appearance. Custom themes can be added through Add more themes and extensions. Custom themes and icon availability differ across platforms.

If Appearance is missing
Check Help > About LibreOffice. Older releases may put related controls under Tools > Options > LibreOffice > View, call them Application Colors, or refer to a LibreOffice Dark mode. Those instructions are version-specific, not the current path. LibreOffice’s built-in dark-mode improvements began around 7.5; behavior changed in 25.2, and the clearer white-document-background control was refined in 25.8. Current 26.2 documentation uses Appearance. See the release notes before applying an old workaround.
Recover from unreadable text or a broken-looking interface
- Return to LibreOffice > Appearance and test Light, Dark and Automatic.
- Toggle Use white document background.
- Choose a different icon theme.
- Select Reset All to return color customizations to the Automatic theme.
- Restart LibreOffice.
- If the profile still behaves incorrectly, test with a fresh user profile before deleting the existing one.
- Inspect the document’s own font colors, styles, page styles, table fills and object colors.
Hard-formatted or imported text can retain a dark font color even when automatic text coloring would provide better contrast. LibreOffice’s accessibility guidance explains this distinction.

Does Dark mode change printing or PDF export?
Do not assume it does. The Appearance settings change how LibreOffice displays the application and editing environment; they do not reliably set a document’s stored page color, text color or object formatting. A dark canvas can still print or export with a white page, while a dark PDF requires deliberate document formatting. Preview exported PDFs and printed pages, and reopen shared DOCX or ODT files to verify their actual formatting.
Where the setting applies
The Appearance choice applies across Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw and Math, although the canvas, sidebars and dialogs can look different in each module. Writer’s application-background bitmap option is separate from normal dark mode and should not be confused with document-page color.

As checked on August 18, 2026, LibreOffice 26.2.5 (released July 24, 2026) was the latest branch and 25.8 was the mature branch. Release-specific fixes and visual differences remain possible across Windows, macOS, GTK-based Linux desktops and Qt-based Linux desktops. Consult the official release information for later changes.
