You can’t get Wi‑Fi literally anywhere: a nearby access point must connect to the internet, and access may require permission, a purchase, or a guest login. In most populated areas, start with a library or community center, then try a business or travel hub. If you need a more private connection, ask someone to share a phone hotspot or use your own if your mobile plan includes it.
Use only networks the venue authorizes. A network appearing in your Wi‑Fi list—or having a strong signal—doesn’t prove it is legitimate or free.
Where to look first
Try these options in order, checking that the venue is open and that you’re allowed to use its network:

Some provide outdoor coverage or lend devices and hotspots, but policies, hours, passwords, and availability vary. Check with the local branch. Federal support for off-premises school and library hotspot lending changed after the FCC reversed its 2024 E‑Rate decision on September 30, 2025; local lending may continue, but it isn’t universal. - Businesses you’re visiting: Cafés, fast-food restaurants, food courts, bookstores, malls, and some grocery stores may provide guest Wi‑Fi. Ask staff for the network name and follow seating, purchase, and time-limit rules. Don’t assume you can use a business’s network from outside or without being a customer.
- Hotels: Guest access may be included, while lobby access or faster service may have different rules or a fee. Ask the front desk for the official network name and login steps. Some portals ask for a room number, surname, booking code, or loyalty account.
- Airports and transit hubs: Access may be free, ad-supported, limited to a session, or divided into free and paid tiers. Use the airport’s signs, website, or staff to verify the SSID and login procedure.
- Public spaces and institutions: City buildings, parks, visitor centers, public transit stations, campuses, and hospitals may offer guest access. Availability and coverage are local; some campus networks require an institutional account, and hospital networks may require a visitor code.
- A friend’s or family member’s phone hotspot: Ask permission and get the password directly from the owner. This shares their cellular data, not a public Wi‑Fi connection.
- Your own phone hotspot: This can be a useful fallback, but it’s free only if your cellular plan includes tethering and you have hotspot data available. Check allowances, speed limits, roaming rules, and possible charges with your carrier.
“Free Wi‑Fi” can mean different things: open access, a guest network with a captive-portal login, access limited to customers or members, or a short free session before a paid tier. A promotional mobile-data trial may require payment details or renew automatically, so it is not the same as free Wi‑Fi.

Find and verify the right network
- Search for a nearby library, community center, café, hotel, or travel hub. Search tools and Wi‑Fi maps can help you discover possibilities, but their listings may be outdated.
- Confirm the venue is open and check its official website for access rules.
- Ask staff or check signs inside the venue for the exact network name (SSID) and login procedure. A criminal can set up a lookalike name, and signal strength is not proof of authenticity. CISA recommends confirming public-hotspot details with appropriate staff. CISA public Wi‑Fi guidance.
- Open Wi‑Fi settings, select the verified network, then complete its sign-in page if one appears. Captive portals may ask you to accept terms or provide an email address, phone number, or guest details. Read what you’re agreeing to and don’t provide sensitive information just to get ordinary access.
- Open a low-risk webpage to check that the connection works. Disconnect and forget the network when you’re done if you don’t expect to use it again.
On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Wi‑Fi, tap the network, and follow the login screen; if prompted, use More Info → Join Network. On Android, Google’s documented path is Settings → Network & internet → Internet, but menu names vary by manufacturer and software version. What to do if the Wi‑Fi login page won’t appear
- Open a browser manually and try a regular webpage to prompt the sign-in page. Don’t enter sensitive details into an unfamiliar portal.
- Turn Wi‑Fi off and back on, or forget the network and reconnect.
- If a VPN or custom DNS setting prevents the portal from loading, you can briefly disable it for portal sign-in, then restore it. If you’re unsure, ask staff instead.
- Check with staff for a separate guest SSID or an outage. If there’s still no connection, switch to a permitted phone hotspot or cellular data.
Don’t bypass a captive portal, guess passwords, or connect to a private network without permission. If Wi‑Fi connects but says there’s no internet, a portal may be incomplete, the session may have expired, or the venue may be having an outage.

Use a phone as a hotspot
For someone else’s hotspot, ask first, then connect using the name and password the owner provides. Connect only the devices you need and disconnect when finished; the connection uses the owner’s mobile data and battery.

A USB connection may be more convenient for a laptop when your phone and plan support it, but exact steps vary by device and carrier.

For banking, work accounts, medical portals, identity documents, or other sensitive tasks, a trusted personal hotspot is generally a better choice than an unfamiliar public network—provided you trust the phone’s owner and cellular connection. It still isn’t a substitute for checking that the site is genuine.
Is public Wi‑Fi safe?
Public Wi‑Fi isn’t automatically dangerous, but it isn’t automatically trustworthy either. Most modern websites and apps use encryption, reducing many risks that were common with unencrypted connections. The FTC says public Wi‑Fi is generally safer than it used to be, while warning that scammers can still create fake, encrypted websites to steal information. FTC guidance on public Wi‑Fi.

- Check the destination, not just the lock icon. HTTPS encrypts information between your browser and a site; it does not prove the site is genuine. Watch for misspelled domains, unexpected login requests, and links from suspicious portals.
- Reject unexpected security prompts. Don’t accept certificate warnings or install an app, browser extension, configuration profile, or certificate just to access normal guest Wi‑Fi.
- Keep devices protected. Update your operating system and browser, use strong unique passwords and two-factor authentication, and turn off file sharing or network discovery on a laptop.
- Limit automatic joining. Review saved networks and disable or restrict automatic connection to open networks so your device doesn’t join an unverified hotspot later. Apple has network-selection safeguards, but you should still review your own Wi‑Fi settings. Apple’s explanation of network auto-join.
- Be selective about portal details. Terms acceptance or an email address may be part of guest access. Requests for banking passwords, government ID numbers, payment details for supposedly free service, or device-management software are strong reasons to stop and verify with the venue.
A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN provider, but it can’t make a fake website genuine or prevent phishing if you hand over your password. It isn’t mandatory for every public Wi‑Fi session or a complete security solution. For sensitive work, a trusted cellular hotspot is often simpler.

If you need a recurring backup, a paid hotspot subscription or cellular-data plan may be more dependable than searching for free access every time. Those are paid connectivity, not free Wi‑Fi, and coverage, prices, speed, and allowances depend on the provider and location. Check the provider’s current terms before signing up.

When no free network is available
There may be no authorized public Wi‑Fi nearby, especially in rural or remote areas. Try a permitted personal or borrowed hotspot if cellular coverage is available. For travel, download maps, tickets, and work documents while you have a reliable connection. For regular connectivity, compare mobile-data, fixed-wireless, or satellite options by coverage and total cost rather than assuming a hotspot map guarantees service.
