There is no verified, universal offer that gives every new OpenAI API account free credits. Check your API billing dashboard first: any free balance is account-specific, and it may show $0.00. Other legitimate routes—ChatGPT promotional trials, student Codex credits, researcher grants and startup credits—have separate rules and do not all work for API calls.

First: Which kind of OpenAI credit do you need?
“Free OpenAI credits” can refer to different products. A ChatGPT subscription trial does not create an API balance, and Codex credits are not a general allowance for an app you build with the API. ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems and histories; check the right one for your intended use.

Check whether your API account has a free balance
- Sign in to the OpenAI API platform.
- Open the organization’s billing overview.
- Check the current balance and look for a “Free trial credit remaining” amount.
- Review usage and payment settings before making calls. If the available free-trial amount is $0.00, there is no free trial balance to use in that account.
OpenAI’s current prepaid-billing documentation does not support the old blanket claim that every new account receives introductory API credit. New API accounts use prepaid billing, and the dashboard—not an old tutorial—is the place to confirm whether your account has a balance. Before adding payment details, inspect auto-recharge. OpenAI’s setup flow describes auto-recharge as enabled by default; turn it off or configure limits if you do not want further automatic purchases. Do not add a payment method just because a third-party page promises a free balance.
If you choose to buy API credits
This is the paid fallback, not a free-credit method. Open the API billing overview, select Add payment details, choose an initial credit amount, review auto-recharge settings, disable it if unwanted, and confirm the purchase. OpenAI currently lists a $5 minimum purchase and a $10 default amount. The balance may take several minutes to update. Purchased credits expire after one year and are non-refundable. Monitor usage and set an appropriate limit before sending requests.

Get a ChatGPT trial or promotion only through a legitimate offer
ChatGPT promotions are for ChatGPT plan access, not API usage. A legitimate offer may arrive through an email invitation, inside ChatGPT, or from an identified partner running an OpenAI promotion. OpenAI says invitations and eligibility vary by campaign; some are limited to new users or people on the Free plan. There is no guarantee that a trial is available to every account or in every region.
- Open the unique invitation link or the partner’s official offer page.
- Sign in or create an OpenAI account, then inspect the plan, trial length, eligibility rules, payment requirement and renewal terms.
- Before completing checkout, confirm that the advertised free period or discount appears in the price shown. If it does not, stop and verify the offer with the provider.
- Record the trial start and end dates, the first renewal date, the cancellation deadline and where you subscribed.
- If you do not want a paid subscription, cancel before renewal. OpenAI advises canceling at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid an unwanted charge.
A payment method may be required even when the initial checkout is $0. A free period can automatically renew at the standard subscription price. Cancellation generally needs to be made on the platform where you started the subscription—such as ChatGPT on the web, Apple App Store or Google Play. Check OpenAI’s free-trial invite FAQ and promotion and referral terms.
Why a promo code may not work
Offers can be restricted by region, partner audience, account or subscription history, plan, payment method, prior use, or expiry. Codes may be single-use or non-transferable, and promotions generally cannot be stacked. A code failing for you does not establish that the offer is fraudulent; check its official terms and eligibility rather than trying codes from coupon marketplaces. OpenAI also maintains specific terms for ChatGPT Go promotions.
Students: claim the Codex offer if you qualify
OpenAI’s student offer provides 2,500 Codex credits, described as equivalent to $100, to eligible students at degree-granting universities in the United States and Canada after verification through SheerID. The offer is limited to one per student, and the credits expire 12 months after they are granted.

- Visit the Codex student offer page.
- Complete university-student verification through SheerID, using your university details as requested.
- After approval, check the usage page to confirm the credits have been applied and use them in Codex before they expire.
These are Codex credits, not API credits. They extend Codex usage; they are not a general balance for a separate app or arbitrary API requests. Check the student offer terms before applying.
Researchers: apply for API credits through the Researcher Access Program
Researchers working on responsible AI deployment, AI safety or societal impacts may apply for up to $1,000 in OpenAI API credits. The program encourages applications from early-stage researchers and those with limited institutional resources, but it is selective; an application is not a guarantee of an award. It is intended for research, not ordinary commercial app development.
Be ready to describe your research question, planned use of OpenAI products, project duration, estimated usage, researcher or institutional details, policy compliance, and sharing or publication considerations. OpenAI says applications are reviewed in March, June, September and December. Decisions and crediting take time; awards may take approximately four to six weeks to credit after the application decision. Credits last 12 months and cannot be extended or renewed.

Some startups backed by participating venture-capital firms may qualify for benefits such as API credits, rate-limit upgrades, technical support or startup resources. This is not a universal public credit offer: ask your VC whether it participates and whether it can provide a referral code. The application may ask for the code, company and product details, intended API use, team contacts, a business email and funding information.

Credits may help with early development, but they are temporary. OpenAI says startups generally move to standard billing after credits are exhausted. Verify the credit amount, expiry, usage limits and billing transition before using the service in production. Start with the OpenAI startup program details or OpenAI for Startups.
Watch for expired offers and misleading claims
Promotions have deadlines. For example, OpenAI documented a Codex CLI launch offer with a June 15, 2026 sign-in deadline. That date had passed by August 16, 2026, so the launch offer is expired—not a current way to claim API credits. Its terms also included eligibility, payment-method and 30-day expiry conditions. Check the dates in any offer’s official documentation before relying on it.
Be skeptical of pages promising that every new account gets credits, that a ChatGPT subscription includes API calls, or that a student offer works with the API. Promotional credits are not cash and may be restricted, non-transferable or time-limited; see OpenAI’s service-credit terms.

- You only want to chat: Start with ChatGPT Free. Use a paid-plan trial only if you receive an eligible official invitation or partner offer.
- You need a small API experiment: Check your API billing overview for an account-specific balance. If it is $0.00, consider a qualifying research or startup route; otherwise, the prepaid minimum is a paid fallback, not a free trial.
- You are a verified university student in the US or Canada: Consider the Codex offer if Codex is what you need, not general API access.
- You are doing eligible AI-safety or societal-impact research: Apply to the Researcher Access Program, understanding that awards are selective.
- You are building a funded startup: Ask your participating VC about a referral and confirm what happens when credits run out.
- You need dependable production capacity: Do not plan around expiring promotional credits. Use paid billing with spending controls or an appropriate business arrangement.
