To use Adobe PDF Embed API, generate its client ID through Adobe’s PDF Embed credential workflow, associate that ID with the domain where your viewer will run, and pass it to the JavaScript viewer when you initialize it. This is a browser-side credential for embedding and displaying PDFs; it is not the credential flow for Adobe PDF Services API.
What credential do you need?
PDF Embed API uses a client ID generated through Adobe’s credential workflow. The ID is supplied when your page initializes Adobe’s JavaScript viewer. Adobe’s getting-started guide identifies the client ID as a prerequisite and explains that it is associated with the website domain where the viewer will be used.
This is different from a secret or access token used to authenticate certain document-processing operations. Do not copy instructions for PDF Services API credentials into an Embed API integration: they are separate products and authentication paths. Adobe’s Acrobat Services overview distinguishes the PDF Embed API from the other services.
Get an Adobe PDF Embed API client ID

Complete Adobe’s credential workflow to generate the client ID. Keep the ID available for the page that will initialize the viewer.

Adobe describes PDF Embed API as free to use on its product page. That statement applies to PDF Embed API; it should not be generalized to every Acrobat Services API.
Register the domain where the viewer runs
Domain registration is a functional part of setup, not just descriptive account information. Adobe validates the client ID and domain after the first PDF page renders. Its getting-started documentation explains that if the ID is incorrect or is being used on a domain other than the one registered, the preview is blocked.

Plan for every origin where you intend to run the viewer. For example, a local development site and a production site may have different domains. Make sure the ID is associated with the domain that will actually serve the viewer, and check the registered value if the first page does not render. The available documentation establishes the domain-match requirement but does not specify a universal list of accepted domain formats, so follow the options Adobe presents in the credential workflow.
Initialize the viewer with the client ID
The integration has four essential pieces: Adobe’s viewer script, a container element, the client ID in the viewer initialization, and a call to previewFile that supplies the PDF and metadata. Adobe provides framework-specific samples as well as JavaScript guidance in its how-tos. Use those samples for the precise setup that matches your application and PDF delivery method.

Do not put a PDF Services API secret or access token into the browser viewer initialization. The Embed API setup described here calls for a client ID.
Test the deployment and diagnose a blocked preview
Test the viewer on the actual domain where it will be deployed. Adobe’s validation occurs after the first page renders, so a credential appearing in the page source is not by itself proof that the setup is valid.
If the preview is blocked

Confirm that the value passed to viewer initialization is the client ID generated for PDF Embed API.

Check that the ID is associated with the domain serving the viewer, rather than a different environment’s domain.

If you have separate local, staging, and production domains, check the credential association for the domain currently being tested before changing application code.
These checks follow Adobe’s documented validation behavior: a wrong ID or domain mismatch prevents the preview from displaying. The supplied Adobe documentation does not establish additional universal error messages or a single troubleshooting sequence for every hosting setup.
If annotation is part of your mobile experience
Adobe’s getting-started guide documents that annotation tools are not supported on phones in Full Window mode. Check this constraint against your intended mobile design if users need to annotate PDFs. Adobe also lists browser support by operating system in that guide; consult the current compatibility notes for the browsers and devices you plan to support.

Choose the integration based on what the application needs. PDF Embed API puts a JavaScript-based viewer on a web page. PDF Services API covers separate document-processing capabilities and has its own getting-started and authentication flow. Adobe’s services overview is the relevant starting point if you are deciding between those categories.

For a page that embeds and displays a PDF, follow the Embed API client-ID flow described above. If your application instead needs document-processing operations, consult the PDF Services API documentation rather than treating the Embed API client ID as a substitute for its credentials.
