For repeatable Selenium screenshots, set the browser window to an explicit width and height, read the dimensions back, and keep the browser, operating system, display scale, and capture sequence consistent. A fixed request such as driver.set_window_size(1024, 768) is a reproducibility control, not a promise that every browser produces identical PNG pixels. Verify the session before each capture and choose between a viewport screenshot and a browser-specific full-document method deliberately.
What “consistent size” means in Selenium
Three dimensions are easy to confuse:
- Outer window size: the browser window dimensions reported by WebDriver.
- Viewport size: the CSS layout area available to the page after browser chrome, scrollbars, and other window decorations are removed.
- Image dimensions: the width and height of the PNG or other screenshot file, which can also be affected by device-pixel scaling and by whether the capture is full-document.
Setting the outer window gives responsive layouts a repeatable starting point. It does not establish that a 1,024 × 768 request becomes a 1,024 × 768 image on every operating system, browser, headless mode, or display scale. Use the returned WebDriver dimensions as evidence of what that session accepted, and measure the output files when exact pixel dimensions are part of a downstream comparison.
Prepare a repeatable capture environment
Window sizing is only one variable. Before comparing images, standardize the parts of the runtime that can change rendering:
- Use the same browser family and browser version for every run.
- Run with the same headed or headless mode. Do not compare a headed desktop session with a headless session without checking the results.
- Keep the operating system, installed fonts, display scale, and color settings consistent.
- Use the same WebDriver and Selenium versions in your project environment.
- Capture the same URL, with the same authentication state, cookies, locale, timezone, user agent, and network conditions.
- Wait for the page state you actually want: a stable element, completed application data, and any fonts or images required for the comparison.
- Use a deterministic test account or fixture data. Live counters, rotating banners, advertisements, timestamps, and animation can change pixels even when the window is identical.
These controls improve repeatability; none is a universal guarantee of pixel-identical output across all environments.

Set and verify the window in Python
Minimal viewport screenshot
Install Selenium in the environment that runs the test, then create the driver, set the size before navigation, read it back, and save the current browsing context as a PNG:

driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png")save_screenshot() writes a PNG. If your comparison pipeline needs bytes instead of a file, use the corresponding Python screenshot method that returns PNG bytes and write those bytes yourself. Keep the filename and encoding process the same between runs.
Fail fast when the requested size was not accepted
A verification step catches infrastructure changes early. It does not prove the output image has the same pixel dimensions:

Wait for the intended page state
Navigate only after sizing the window, then wait for a condition that represents visual readiness. For example, wait for a chart container to be visible before saving:

The ordinary screenshot operation captures the current browsing context; it should not be described as an automatic full-page capture. Firefox’s Python WebDriver API separately documents full-document screenshot methods. Treat those methods as browser-specific and verify support for the browser version used by your test. The reviewed Selenium API does not establish one universal full-page method that behaves identically across browsers.
Make full-document captures explicit
If the target is a complete page, call the full-document method exposed by the browser driver you selected, such as Firefox’s documented full-page screenshot operation, rather than assuming a normal viewport screenshot will include content below the fold. Record the browser and method with the artifact. A full-page image can be far taller than the viewport and may involve different handling of lazy-loaded content, sticky elements, and fixed headers.
Keep visual comparisons deterministic
Control responsive breakpoints
Small viewport changes can switch navigation, grid columns, typography, or image sources. Set the window before loading the page and check the reported dimensions. If a test is intended to exercise a breakpoint, choose a width on purpose and keep it there; do not rely on whatever size a shared desktop or CI host happens to provide.

Stabilize dynamic content
Hide or freeze content that is not part of the visual assertion, using test data or application-level controls where possible. Common sources of drift include current dates, randomized IDs, rotating promotions, live prices, cursor states, video, canvas animation, and asynchronously loaded fonts. Wait for required images and components, and capture at the same scroll position.

A vertical scrollbar can reduce the CSS viewport width and trigger a breakpoint. Operating-system display scaling and browser device-pixel ratio can change the number of image pixels produced for the same CSS dimensions. Log the returned window size, viewport size, device-pixel ratio, browser identity, and whether the run was headed or headless along with each baseline.
Use a stable capture sequence
- Create a fresh driver with the same options.
- Set and verify the window size.
- Navigate to the same URL and establish the same session state.
- Wait for the same readiness condition.
- Apply the same scroll position and any test-only visual normalization.
- Capture with the same screenshot method and file format.
- Store the environment metadata with the image.

FAQ
Should I compare screenshots as files or as rendered images?
Use the same format and encoding for every baseline, then compare the decoded image pixels when your tool allows it. File metadata or compression differences can otherwise look like visual changes.
Is a fixed 1024 × 768 window a standard Selenium requirement?
No. It is the concrete size used in Selenium’s Python example and a useful reproducibility baseline. Choose dimensions that match your product’s supported layouts and verify what your runtime reports.
Can one full-page method be used for every browser?
Do not assume that. Full-document screenshot APIs are documented separately by browser drivers, including Firefox. Confirm support and output behavior for the browser used by your tests.
