Locate the target as a Selenium WebElement, then call the element’s screenshot method—not the driver’s window screenshot method. In Python, element.screenshot('element.png') writes a PNG containing that element; in Java, use ((TakesScreenshot) element).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE).
Choose the capture scope first
Selenium exposes screenshot operations on both the browser driver and individual elements. The object on which you call the method determines what is captured.

If the requirement says “screenshot this card,” “capture the chart,” or “save the button,” keep the call on the WebElement. A driver-level call is the wrong scope and produces a window screenshot.

driver.quit()The wait matters when the page inserts the element after navigation or changes it during rendering. Replace the URL and selector with your page’s values. An ID or a short CSS selector is usually easier to audit than a long generated XPath.
Get PNG bytes or base64 instead of creating a file

Path("artifacts/target.png").write_bytes(png_bytes)screenshot_as_png is the raw PNG byte string. screenshot_as_base64 is the same image represented as base64 text, useful when another API accepts text rather than a file. These properties still capture the element; using them does not change the scope.

Make the element ready before capture
Wait for existence and visibility
Finding an element only proves that it exists in the DOM. A screenshot taken while it is hidden, empty, or still being replaced can be blank or incomplete. Use an explicit wait for the state your test needs, such as visibility, and then capture the returned element.
Reacquire after page updates
Single-page applications can replace a node after a render. If Selenium reports a stale element, wait for the update to finish and call find_element again; do not keep using the old WebElement reference.
Stabilize animated or lazy content
Pause until the relevant image, chart, or text has appeared and animations have reached a stable state. If the element changes while Selenium is reading it, retry only after reacquiring it and confirming the page state, otherwise successive files can disagree.
Deal with viewport position
Scroll the target into view when the page or driver does not reliably capture an off-screen element. A JavaScript scroll is often sufficient:

Do not assume that every browser or driver returns identical pixels for a very tall or entirely off-screen element. The Selenium Java API describes standards-conformant behavior under the W3C WebDriver specification; for non-conformant implementations, Selenium documents best-effort behavior that prefers the full element content and then the visible portion.
Understand what the PNG contains
An element screenshot is rendered from the browser’s current state: CSS, fonts, images, scroll position, and any overlays that are still present. It is not a fresh server-side render. Consent dialogs, chat controls, loading masks, and other children remain if they are visible inside or over the target at capture time.
The output is PNG in the Python element API and in the Java examples above. If you need JPEG or WebP, convert the resulting bytes with an image library after capture; Selenium’s element methods themselves are documented around PNG output.
Common failures and precise fixes

Portability, reliability, and cost considerations
Portability
W3C-conformant WebDriver implementations are the portable baseline. Selenium’s documented fallback for non-conformant elements is best effort, so full-content versus visible-content behavior can differ. Pin compatible browser and driver versions in CI and keep a small visual check for the pages whose screenshots matter.

Reliability
Use unique, deterministic filenames that include the test name or case identifier. Keep the browser session alive only as long as needed, close it in a finally block, and preserve the page URL, selector, and exception alongside a failed artifact. A retry should address a transient page state; it should not hide a permanently broken locator.
Performance
The expensive part is normally navigation and page rendering, not writing a small PNG. Reuse a session when tests are independent and safe to share, wait on specific conditions instead of arbitrary long sleeps, and avoid capturing the full window when an element image is all you need.
Cost
Local Selenium screenshots have no per-image service charge, but your test runners still consume browser, CPU, memory, storage, and CI time. A hosted screenshot API can be useful when you do not want to maintain browser setup, drivers, rendering environments, or parallel workers.
