You can add an always-on-display-style clock or notification indicator to many Android phones, but only compatible models offer a true, low-power, system-integrated AOD. Check your phone’s built-in display settings first; if there is no suitable option, a Play Store app may imitate one, with extra battery use and permissions to consider.
First, check whether your phone already has AOD
Open Settings and search for Always On Display, AOD, Ambient display, Always show time and info, Lock screen, Peek Display, Glance or Sleep display. Menu names vary by model, Android version and manufacturer, so Settings search is usually more reliable than following a generic path.
- Samsung Galaxy: Try Settings → Lock screen and AOD → Always On Display. Depending on the model and One UI version, you may be able to keep it on, show it on a schedule, display it for new notifications or show it after a tap. Some configurations show it only briefly or at selected times. See Samsung’s AOD guide and troubleshooting advice.
- Google Pixel: Try Settings → Display & touch → Lock screen → Always show time and info. Pixel’s At a Glance feature can add selected information, but it is not a separate replacement for the AOD system. See Google’s Pixel lock-screen guidance.
- Motorola: Look under Display or Lock screen for Glance, Peek Display or Sleep display. Labels and behavior vary. “Glance” can mean personalized lock-screen content, so check that the option actually provides the clock or notification behavior you want. Motorola has model- and software-specific guidance for Sleep display and Glance.
On OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi, Asus, Sony and Nothing phones, search Settings and check the Display, Lock screen, Personalizations or Wallpapers and style sections. A feature called Ambient Display may only wake the screen briefly when you lift or tap the phone or receive a notification; that is different from information remaining visible continuously.

What “always-on” means—and what an app can do
A native AOD is built into the phone’s display and lock-screen software and can use a low-power display mode. Ambient or peek features may show information only in response to movement, a tap or a notification. A third-party AOD app instead imitates the effect, typically by showing a black screen overlay with a clock and optional notifications after the display locks. A notification-light emulator may show only a dot or ring, not a persistent clock.

An app cannot give every phone the same hardware-integrated AOD. Whether an overlay appears reliably depends on the display, Android build, manufacturer restrictions and the permissions the app needs. The Android documentation about always-on behavior describes Wear OS development, not a universal way to enable AOD on any Android phone.
Check your display before installing an app
OLED and AMOLED panels can light individual pixels while leaving most of the display black, which can make a minimal AOD more practical. The lit pixels, display controller, notification monitoring and background activity still use power: an OLED AOD is not battery-free.

On an LCD phone, the backlight illuminates the display area, so a small clock on a black background does not deliver the same power advantage. An app may technically show an AOD-style overlay on LCD, but continuous use can be a poor trade-off. Consider notification-only wake-ups or a brief display schedule instead. Battery impact varies by phone, app and settings; “minimal drain” claims in app listings are developer claims, not universal measurements. Google lists disabling AOD among Pixel’s battery-saving measures in its battery guidance.
Set up a third-party AOD app
- Open Google Play and choose an app whose listing describes the features you need and clearly explains permissions and data practices. Prefer a maintained listing, but remember that an update history or high rating does not establish privacy or compatibility.
- Install and open it. Enable features individually rather than accepting every optional permission at once.
- Grant only access needed for your chosen features. Notification access may be needed for notification icons or content; overlay or lock-screen display access may be needed to show the screen; accessibility access may be used to detect lock state or notification events; and modify-system-settings access may control brightness. Not every app needs every permission.
- Turn on pixel shifting or burn-in protection, if offered. Enable pocket or proximity detection if you want the display to turn off when covered.
- Choose a schedule—for example, turn the display off overnight—and keep brightness at the lowest readable level. Use a simple clock rather than bright animations.
- Lock the phone and check that the display appears after timeout, notifications behave as expected, the phone can still be unlocked normally, and the AOD turns off in a pocket or when face-down. Reboot and test again if you need the app to survive restarts.

- Always On AMOLED offers clock customization, notifications, pocket and night modes, burn-in movement, music controls and Tasker integration. Its listing identifies ads and in-app purchases and describes permissions for certain functions, including camera access for flashlight control, phone access for calls and settings access for brightness. Its listed update was June 16, 2025, so check whether it remains compatible with your Android version.
- AOD Flow lists clock styles, notifications, music controls, scheduling, dimming, pocket mode and burn-in protection. The listing identifies ads and in-app purchases. Choose it only if its current permissions and commercial terms suit you.
- Always On Display: AMOLED Edge lists edge lighting, notification filters, scheduling, pocket detection and burn-in protection. Its listing says it requires accessibility access and declares data collection or sharing categories; read those disclosures before granting access. Any battery-drain figure in its listing is a developer claim, not an independent test.
- Peek AOD focuses on notifications and can be configured, according to its listing, for charging-only use, new-notification use or continuous display after lock. It lists in-app purchases. Check whether its notification-focused behavior matches your needs.
- NotifyBuddy is better understood as an AMOLED notification-light emulator than a full AOD: it displays an LED-style indicator, rather than a persistent clock. Its listing says notification access is required and recommends disabling ambient display and battery optimization; Xiaomi-style devices may need separate AutoStart and lock-screen permissions. The listing identifies ads and in-app purchases.
Permissions and privacy: decide before you tap Allow
Be cautious with notification access and accessibility access. Notification access can expose notification details to an app. Accessibility services can potentially observe interface content and user interaction, so do not grant that access casually. If the app can provide the feature without accessibility access, that is generally preferable.
Before granting access, ask whether the app needs notification content or only an arrival signal; whether it requests phone, camera, location, contacts or storage access unrelated to the feature; whether it shows ads on the lock screen; whether it asks you to disable battery optimization; and whether its Google Play Data safety disclosures match the purpose you expect. Those disclosures are provided by developers and may change. A strong rating, download count or paid price does not by itself show that an app is safe or private.

Reduce battery use and screen wear
- Use a small, mostly black clock and the lowest readable brightness.
- Enable pixel shifting or automatic movement, and avoid a bright static logo or clock left in one place for long periods.
- Use pocket/proximity detection and schedule the display to turn off while you sleep or do not need it.
- If a brief notification wake-up is enough, use that instead of continuous display.
- Hide notification text or show icons only if privacy matters.
- Disable animations and music visualizers, particularly when charging.
- Do not exempt an app from battery optimization unless it repeatedly stops working and you accept the trade-off. Background restrictions can affect reliability; changing them may increase battery use. See Motorola’s battery-management guidance.
On OLED, burn-in is permanent uneven pixel aging; temporary image retention can fade. LCD persistence is a different issue from OLED burn-in. Pixel shifting, low brightness and schedules reduce risk but do not prove that a third-party app cannot cause screen wear. Samsung says its own AOD is designed not to cause burn-in; that assurance is specific to Samsung’s implementation and should not be applied automatically to third-party overlays.
If the AOD app stops appearing
- Confirm the app is enabled and review its notification, overlay and lock-screen permissions. A system update may have reset access.
- Check the phone’s battery settings for restricted background activity. If the manufacturer provides an AutoStart control, enable it only if needed for reliable operation.
- As a test, remove the app from restricted battery mode or battery optimization. If it still fails, restore the original setting rather than leaving a broad exception without a reason.
- If the phone’s native Ambient Display conflicts with the overlay, try turning off the native feature and test again.
- Disable other lock-screen customization or overlay apps, reboot, then test after screen timeout and after a restart.
- On Xiaomi/MIUI-style software, check both Android app permissions and manufacturer controls such as Security, AutoStart, display-over-other-apps and show-on-lock-screen. The Always On AMOLED listing describes Xiaomi-specific permission examples, though the exact labels may vary.
- If the app still fails, switch to a simpler notification indicator or return to the built-in lock screen. Overlay apps can also behave differently with fingerprint unlock, full-screen games, work-profile notification policies, tablets and foldables.
If the phone heats up or battery drain becomes unacceptable—especially while charging—turn the AOD off and compare normal use. Brightness, animated effects, wireless charging and background activity can all contribute to heat.
Should you use ADB to force-enable AOD?
Some online guides suggest changing a secure setting with a command such as adb shell settings put secure doze_always_on 1, then reversing it with adb shell settings put secure doze_always_on 0. This is an experiment, not a universal solution. It may have no effect if the phone lacks an AOD-capable implementation, uses a different setting key, ignores the change or does not have a compatible display or lock-screen service. It can also create confusing behavior.
For most readers, use the manufacturer’s setting or a Play Store app instead. If you are an advanced user who chooses to test ADB, enable USB debugging deliberately, obtain Android platform-tools from an official Android source, and understand how to reverse the setting. Do not install random ADB packages or treat a command that works on one phone as proof it will work on another.
Quick Recap
Choose the route that fits your phone
- Samsung Galaxy or Pixel with native AOD: Use the built-in option first. It is generally the simplest route and avoids adding a third-party overlay.
- OLED/AMOLED phone without native AOD: A third-party AOD may provide the clock and notifications you want, provided you accept its permissions, background behavior and extra battery use.
- LCD phone: Prefer notification-triggered wake-ups or an LED-style indicator over continuous AOD unless you have tested the battery impact.
- You only miss a notification light: Consider a notification-light emulator such as NotifyBuddy rather than a full clock overlay.
- Privacy is the priority: Stick with native AOD or avoid an app that requires notification or accessibility access you do not want to grant.
- Battery life is the priority: Use a brief notification display, charging-only mode or a schedule rather than leaving an overlay active all day.
