To get a URL for a PNG stored on your device, upload it to a hosting or cloud-storage service, set the access permission, then copy the correct link type. Use an image host’s direct image address when a website needs the PNG itself; use a Drive or Dropbox sharing link when people only need to open or download the file.
First decide which kind of URL you need
“Image URL” can mean two different things:
- Direct image URL: points to the image resource and can be used as an image source in HTML, a forum, a CMS, an API field or an app that expects a PNG.
- Sharing URL: opens a file page, preview or download flow for people. It may not work in an
<img>tag or another field that requires image bytes.
Before uploading, check the destination’s requirement. If it says “image URL,” “direct link,” “image source” or “URL ending in .png,” choose a direct-link workflow and test the result. If it only says “share the file,” a permission-controlled cloud link is usually sufficient.
Fastest method: upload to Imgur and copy the image address
Imgur documents direct URL retrieval for uploaded content. The exact buttons can vary between its desktop and mobile interfaces, but the process is:
- Open Imgur and start a new post.
- Select the PNG from your device, or drag it into the upload area.
- Wait for the upload to finish.
- Open the individual image, not merely the post page.
- On desktop, right-click the image and choose Copy image address. On mobile, open the image or media menu and use the option that copies the image address or direct link.
- Paste the result into the destination that needs the URL, then test it in a private browser window if the image must be publicly reachable.
Imgur Help says uploaded content can be located with a direct URL link. The important distinction is that a post-page URL and an individual image address are not interchangeable.

Verify that the link is really direct
- Paste it into a new browser tab. A direct link should display the image resource rather than an Imgur post, login page or gallery.
- Inspect the address and response behavior. Some destinations require an image URL that resolves without an interactive page.
- Check the file’s format and transparency after hosting. A service may transform the upload.
Imgur’s PNG size and conversion caveats
Imgur’s help documentation states that non-animated images have a 50 MB maximum. It also says PNG files over 5 MB are converted to JPEG, and that non-animated images over 1 MB for anonymous uploads or 5 MB for account holders are lossily compressed. These are Imgur-specific limits stated on an undated help page, not universal rules for image hosts. If transparency, pixel-perfect data or the original PNG bytes matter, download the hosted result and compare it with your source before using the link.
Use Google Drive when a controlled file-sharing link is enough
Google Drive is appropriate when recipients need to view or download the PNG and you want permission controls. It is not a guaranteed direct-image host.
- Upload the PNG to Google Drive.
- Right-click the file and select Share.
- Under General access, choose Anyone with the link if the recipient must open it without signing in.
- Choose the role, normally Viewer, and select Copy link.
- Paste the link into your message or document.
Drive’s copied link may open a viewer or preview page. Do not promise that it will work wherever an <img src> value or raw image resource is required. Drive also warns that people who receive the file can see the owner’s name and email address, so review that exposure before making a file broadly accessible.
Use Dropbox for a shareable file link
Dropbox lets you share a file or folder with people who do not have Dropbox accounts. Upload the PNG, open its sharing controls, create or copy the link, and send it. Treat that result as a shared-file URL unless you have confirmed that the target accepts it as a direct image resource. A preview page, redirect or access restriction can prevent an embed from loading.

If the PNG is already online
You do not need to upload an image that is already hosted. In Google Images, open the image result, choose Share, and copy the URL. Google’s documented share link starts with https://share.google/. That shares the search result’s image link; it is different from hosting a local PNG and may not be a stable direct image resource for embedding.
Do not confuse a search result with the original file
A search-result share link is useful for sending a person to an image, but it can depend on the search interface, permissions or the source page. If an app needs the actual PNG, open the source page and use the source site’s image-address action, or upload a copy to a host that provides direct links.
Choosing the right workflow
| Need | Best starting point | What you receive | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embed the image itself | Imgur individual-image address | Direct image URL | PNG conversion or compression can occur under Imgur’s stated limits. |
| Share privately or revoke access | Google Drive | Permission-controlled sharing link | Usually a viewer/preview URL, not a guaranteed raw image URL. |
| Share with people without accounts | Dropbox | Shared-file link | Confirm direct-image compatibility before embedding. |
| Send an image you found in search | Google Images Share | Search-result share URL | Not the same as hosting a local PNG or linking to original bytes. |
Evaluate each option by five questions: Does the destination need image bytes or merely a human-readable link? Should access be public or restricted? Must PNG format, transparency and original data be preserved? Is the copy-link action practical on your device? Does the final URL work in the actual website or app?
How to test a PNG URL before publishing it
- Open the URL in a private or logged-out browser window to reveal accidental permission requirements.
- Confirm that the expected image appears and that no sign-in, cookie wall or viewer page blocks it.
- Try the URL in the exact destination: an HTML image field, CMS editor, forum, email builder or API request.
- Check dimensions, transparency and file type if those properties matter.
- Keep a backup of the original PNG. A host can change, remove, recompress or transform a file.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The image URL shows a webpage”
You copied a post, preview or sharing-page URL. Return to the individual image and use an image-address or direct-link command. If the service only provides a viewer, use its link for people rather than for an image-source field.

“The embed asks viewers to sign in”
The file is permission-controlled. In Drive, review General access and choose Anyone with the link only when public access is acceptable. Otherwise use a service and destination that support authenticated delivery.
“The PNG lost transparency or looks different”
The host transformed or compressed it. Imgur specifically documents JPEG conversion for PNGs over 5 MB and lossy compression thresholds for non-animated uploads. Re-upload a smaller PNG only if the resulting quality is acceptable, or choose a workflow that preserves the original file and verify the download.
“The link works for me but not for other people”
Your browser may have an existing login or permission. Test while logged out, in a private window, or from another account. Check that the link grants the intended role and that the file has not been moved or deleted.
“The destination rejects the URL”
It may require a direct resource URL, HTTPS, a particular extension or an allowed host. Test the URL in a browser, then consult the destination’s field requirements. A Drive, Dropbox or search-result link may be valid for sharing but invalid for an image-source field.

Privacy, permanence and ownership checks
- Do not upload confidential screenshots, personal documents or private customer data to a public host.
- Review who can access an “anyone with the link” file and whether owner information is exposed.
- Confirm that you own the PNG or have permission to redistribute it.
- Retain the source file and record where the hosted copy lives so you can replace a broken link.
- Expect interfaces and limits to change; recheck the host’s current help documentation when a link is business-critical.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a URL for an existing local PNG, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and MCP server. It does not turn a private PNG on your device into a permanent public file URL; it captures a supplied web URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF bytes. That distinction matters.
For example, this cURL request captures Stripe as a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webpSee the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details. The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call screenshot, page-info and PDF tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account if that screenshot workflow—not hosting an existing PNG—is what you need.

Can I create a URL without uploading the PNG?
No. A file stored only on your device is not reachable by the public internet until you upload it to a host or share it through a service that provides access.

Is a URL ending in “.png” always a direct image link?
No. Extensions can be misleading, and redirects or access controls can still lead to a page. Open the URL while logged out and test it in the intended destination.
Will a public link reveal my identity?
It can. Google Drive says recipients may see the owner’s name and email address. Review the service’s sharing and profile disclosures before publishing.
