To show a large image when someone shares a page on X (formerly Twitter), add twitter:card and page-specific title, description, and image tags to that page’s HTML <head>. Make the image available at a public HTTPS URL, and add matching Open Graph tags so LinkedIn, Facebook, Slack, and other link-preview readers can use the same page metadata.
How to add a large image to an X link preview
Place the following metadata in the server-rendered <head> of the page you want people to share. Replace the example text and URLs with values for that specific page.
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:title" content="How to generate link-preview thumbnails">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="A concise description of the page.">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/social-preview.jpg">
<meta name="twitter:image:alt" content="Description of the important visual information">
<meta property="og:title" content="How to generate link-preview thumbnails">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of the page.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/social-preview.jpg">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
The X card properties use name=; Open Graph properties use property=. The image value should be an absolute HTTPS URL, not a site-relative path such as /images/preview.jpg. X-specific metadata has historically taken precedence when provided, while Open Graph tags can supply missing values. Matching both sets makes the page usable by X and other Open Graph consumers.
What each tag does
twitter:cardselects the X card layout. Usesummary_large_imagefor the large landscape presentation.twitter:titleandtwitter:descriptionprovide the preview text.twitter:imagepoints to the thumbnail image. The crawler must be able to fetch it without signing in.twitter:image:altgives a concise text description of the image for accessibility.og:title,og:description,og:image, andog:urlprovide corresponding Open Graph values.og:typeidentifies the page type;articleis appropriate for an article page.og:image:widthandog:image:heightdescribe the image dimensions. Keep these values accurate if you include them.
Choose the card layout
| Card value | What it shows | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
summary_large_image |
A large landscape image above the title and description. | Use for articles, landing pages, and posts where the image should have visual prominence. |
summary |
A small square image beside the preview text. | Use when the image is secondary; X crops this format to a square. |
For an article thumbnail intended to attract attention and communicate the page topic at a glance, summary_large_image is usually the appropriate choice. The card value controls the layout, but the image still needs to be composed for cropping and legibility.

Make an image that survives cropping
A practical cross-platform canvas is 1200 × 630 pixels, an aspect ratio of about 1.91:1. It is a useful working size, not a guarantee that every service will display every pixel identically. Platforms can crop or cache previews differently, so keep important text, faces, and logos near the center rather than at the extreme edges.
- Use a distinct image for each important page rather than repeating one generic logo everywhere.
- Keep the key message short, with large, high-contrast type that remains readable on a phone.
- Do not put essential content close to the image borders, where different crops can cut it off.
- Write useful alternative text describing the visual information, not just “thumbnail” or “image.”
- Export to a format and size compatible with the services you target. Older implementation guidance lists 300 × 157 as a minimum for large-image cards, 4096 × 4096 as maximum dimensions, and 5 MB as a maximum file size; treat these as historical compatibility guidance and verify current X behavior before relying on them. That guidance lists JPG, PNG, WEBP, and GIF, notes that animated GIF uses only its first frame, and says SVG is unsupported.
These image limits come from older third-party guidance, not a current guarantee from X. If a card fails despite correct metadata, try a conventional JPG or PNG at a moderate file size and confirm the current platform behavior.

Make the page and image fetchable
Correct tags cannot help if X’s crawler cannot retrieve them. Both the page and image should be publicly reachable over HTTPS. Check that access does not depend on a login, a firewall rule, hotlink protection, or a robots restriction that blocks the crawler. The tags need to appear in the HTML returned by the server; metadata inserted only after client-side JavaScript runs may not be present when a crawler reads the page.
Use the canonical public URL in og:url, and ensure the page URL you share serves the intended page rather than an error, redirect loop, or access challenge. The image URL should return the image itself to an unauthenticated request, not an HTML error page or a redirect to a private asset.

Generate page-specific images manually or at scale
Manual design or a CMS
For a small site, make the image in a design tool or use the social-image field in your CMS, then enter the page-specific title, description, image URL, and alt text. Check that your theme or SEO plugin outputs the matching X and Open Graph tags. Plugins often generate tags automatically, so inspect the final HTML before adding a second set by hand; duplicate values that disagree can make debugging difficult.
Hosted image generation
If each page needs a distinct thumbnail and you publish many pages, a hosted dynamic image generator can create graphics from page data instead of requiring a designer to export each file. OpenGraphImage documents a compatible pattern for Open Graph and X cards; OpenGraphImage is one option to evaluate for dynamic generation. For hands-on creation and troubleshooting, og-image.org offers generator and validator tooling for X/Twitter cards. Check each service’s current capabilities and terms before choosing it.

Check a preview and refresh stale metadata
- Open the page’s server-rendered HTML and confirm the expected tags are in its
<head>. Check spelling, attribute type, and that values match the page. - Confirm the card is set to exactly
summary_large_imageorsummary. - Open the image URL in a private browser window or another unauthenticated context. Verify it returns the intended image over HTTPS.
- Check for duplicate tags from a theme, CMS, or SEO plugin, especially if the preview displays an old title or image.
- Paste the page URL into X’s post composer and inspect the preview. If needed, use a reputable card validator; tools and availability can change.
- After changing metadata or an image, account for caching. If the old image persists, changing the image URL can prompt a fresh fetch; a query parameter may also help if your image host and site configuration treat it as a distinct URL.
X’s 2019 handbook describes the purpose of the format this way: “With Twitter Cards, you can attach rich photos, videos, and media experiences to Tweets, helping to drive traffic to your website.” The platform’s current behavior and tooling can change; the reliable starting point is still to inspect the rendered page and the preview X produces.
Common reasons the thumbnail is missing
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No image appears | The image URL is inaccessible, blocked, not HTTPS, or returns something other than an image. | Request the absolute image URL without authentication; remove crawler-blocking restrictions and confirm the response serves the image. |
| Text appears but there is no large image | The card value is absent, misspelled, or set to summary. |
Set twitter:card to summary_large_image in the rendered head. |
| The wrong title or image appears | Duplicate or conflicting plugin/theme tags, or a cached preview. | Inspect every relevant tag in the final HTML, remove conflicting output, then prompt a new fetch by updating the image URL where appropriate. |
| The tags exist in browser developer tools but the card is blank | The tags may be added only by client-side JavaScript. | Render the metadata in the initial server response so a crawler can read it without running the page’s client-side code. |
| The image is cropped awkwardly | Important content is too near the edges or the service uses a different crop. | Move text and faces inward and check the actual preview rather than relying only on the source image dimensions. |
| The page works for you but not for the crawler | A login wall, firewall, hotlink rule, robots restriction, or access challenge blocks automated retrieval. | Test public access without a logged-in session and allow the required page and image fetches. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page image for testing or automation—not to configure X’s own preview metadata—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not replace the need to set the page’s card metadata and host a shareable preview image for X.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Twitter thumbnail use a separate image file for every page?
Not necessarily. Each page needs an appropriate image URL in its metadata, but multiple pages can point to the same image if that image genuinely represents them.
Can I use the same metadata for X and LinkedIn or Facebook?
Yes. Matching X card tags and Open Graph tags let the page provide metadata to both, though each platform may crop and cache its preview differently.
Can I use an SVG as the card image?
Older third-party implementation guidance lists SVG as unsupported. A JPG or PNG is a safer compatibility choice; confirm current platform behavior if you need a different format.
