To generate a styled PDF from an Angular component, render a dedicated export region, wait until its content and images are ready, capture that element with html2canvas, then place the resulting canvas image into a PDF and save it. This is a browser-side, image-oriented workflow: it can preserve the appearance of supported CSS, but it is not a literal browser screenshot and does not automatically produce searchable PDF text.
Choose the right browser-side workflow
The basic pipeline is the same whichever PDF library you choose: select one DOM element, render it to a canvas with html2canvas, then use a PDF library to size, paginate, and save the result. The html2canvas getting-started guide documents asynchronous use and browser support. Its documentation explains that it reconstructs a rendering from DOM elements and supported CSS properties rather than taking a native screenshot.
| Route | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| html2canvas + jsPDF directly | You need control over image placement, page dimensions, and the integration in your Angular code. | You must implement scaling and multi-page behavior yourself. |
| html2pdf.js | You want a higher-level client-side workflow with options for PDF format, margins, image encoding, and page breaks. | You rely on the wrapper’s behavior and version; inspect and test the selected release. |
The html2pdf.js package documentation describes the wrapper route and its output options at npmjs.com/package/html2pdf.js. Neither route makes unsupported CSS render faithfully, guarantees ideal page breaks, or makes canvas-rendered text searchable. If selectable text or accessibility in the PDF is a requirement, test the final file and consider whether a DOM-to-canvas workflow meets that requirement at all.
Prepare an export region in Angular
Capture a focused section rather than the whole application view. Give the export content a stable template reference and keep controls such as download buttons outside it. You can exclude individual descendants using the documented data-html2canvas-ignore attribute.

Prefer a dedicated export layout over trying to reproduce every detail of a complex interactive screen. Remove transient UI, make the content width predictable, and check how charts, shadows, fonts, backgrounds, and transformed elements appear in the PDF. The html2canvas examples show capture of a chosen element, scaling options, CORS use, and ignored elements.
Install and implement direct capture with TypeScript
Install html2canvas and jspdf using your package manager, then verify the current package versions and APIs before adopting them in a production project. The following component illustrates the integration. It is implementation guidance, not a version-specific Angular compatibility guarantee; adapt imports and Angular query syntax to your project.
import { Component, ElementRef, ViewChild } from '@angular/core';
import html2canvas from 'html2canvas';
import { jsPDF } from 'jspdf';
@Component({
selector: 'app-report',
templateUrl: './report.component.html',
})
export class ReportComponent {
@ViewChild('exportRegion')
exportRegion!: ElementRef<HTMLElement>;
exporting = false;
exportError = '';
async exportPdf(): Promise<void> {
const element = this.exportRegion?.nativeElement;
if (!element || this.exporting) return;
this.exporting = true;
this.exportError = '';
try {
await this.waitForImages(element);
const canvas = await html2canvas(element, {
scale: window.devicePixelRatio || 1,
useCORS: true,
backgroundColor: '#ffffff',
});
const pdf = new jsPDF({
orientation: 'portrait',
unit: 'mm',
format: 'a4',
});
const pageWidth = pdf.internal.pageSize.getWidth();
const pageHeight = pdf.internal.pageSize.getHeight();
const margin = 10;
const printableWidth = pageWidth - margin * 2;
const printableHeight = pageHeight - margin * 2;
const imageHeight = canvas.height * printableWidth / canvas.width;
const image = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
// A single-page example: long content needs explicit slicing or pagination.
const fittedHeight = Math.min(imageHeight, printableHeight);
pdf.addImage(image, 'PNG', margin, margin, printableWidth, fittedHeight);
pdf.save('report.pdf');
} catch (error) {
console.error('PDF export failed', error);
this.exportError = 'Could not generate the PDF. Check the content and try again.';
} finally {
this.exporting = false;
}
}
private async waitForImages(root: HTMLElement): Promise<void> {
const images = Array.from(root.querySelectorAll('img'));
await Promise.all(images.map((img) => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise<void>((resolve) => {
img.addEventListener('load', () => resolve(), { once: true });
img.addEventListener('error', () => resolve(), { once: true });
});
}));
}
}
Use the export method from a user action after Angular has rendered the view. The image-wait helper lets capture proceed if an image fails, so a broken image may still be absent from the output; replace that behavior with an explicit failure if every image is required. If content is populated asynchronously, wait for that data and any layout changes before calling capture. The sample scales the canvas image to fit one A4 page; it deliberately does not pretend to paginate long content correctly.
How sizing and pagination work
The canvas has pixel dimensions; the PDF uses physical page units. The sample converts canvas aspect ratio into millimetres so the image fits the printable width without distortion. For content taller than the printable page, that single-page placement clips the visual result by fitting only a shorter image height. Do not use it for long reports without adding explicit page slicing or choosing a wrapper with page-break handling.

With html2pdf.js, configure page format, margins, image type and quality, and page-break behavior according to the package’s current documentation. Confirm output with realistic content: a break that works for one card or paragraph may split a table, chart, or heading awkwardly.
Handle CSS, images, and browser constraints
CSS fidelity is selective
html2canvas traverses the DOM and renders properties it understands; it does not capture the browser’s finished pixels directly. Some CSS can therefore differ from the visible page. Test fonts, backgrounds, shadows, transforms, charts, and other visually important elements in the browsers you support. A print-specific export region is easier to validate than a whole application view.
Cross-origin images require permission
Set useCORS: true when appropriate, but it does not bypass browser security. The remote image server must allow the cross-origin request, or you need a properly configured proxy. Otherwise, an image may be omitted or the canvas may become unusable for export. See the project’s cross-origin guidance and examples. Content in a cross-origin iframe cannot be read through your page’s DOM access; capture it only if you control an allowed integration route.
Wait for rendered content
Angular rendering may finish before a remote image, chart, web font, or asynchronously loaded data is ready. Run the export only after the relevant content is present and stable. If output is intermittently missing assets, add explicit readiness checks for those assets instead of relying on an arbitrary delay.

Browser-only execution
html2canvas depends on browser APIs and is intended for browser use; its guide lists evergreen browser support. It is not a Node.js rendering solution. The available documentation does not establish a version-by-version Angular compatibility matrix, so verify the package behavior against your Angular and browser versions.
When to use ScreenshotNeo instead
If the goal is a PDF of a public website rather than an Angular component rendered inside the user’s browser, you can capture the URL through ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. For an Angular component export, the browser-side method above is the relevant route because it captures the page’s rendered DOM element.
Or skip the browser setup
For a URL-based website PDF, ScreenshotNeo accepts a single GET request and can return a PDF. Its capture options include PDF paper size, margins, landscape, and page ranges. Cookie/consent banners are accepted before capture and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, or other MCP clients.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.pdf
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for free.
Troubleshoot common export failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| PDF is blank or captures the wrong area | The query reference is unavailable, the view has not rendered, or the selected element is not the intended export region. | Call the method after the view exists; verify the template reference and inspect the element passed to html2canvas. |
| Images disappear or export throws a security error | A remote origin does not allow CORS, or the canvas was tainted. | Use an image host that permits the request or a correctly configured proxy. useCORS alone cannot override the policy. |
| Styles differ from the screen | The CSS feature is unsupported or rendered differently by html2canvas. | Simplify or adapt the export styles and validate a print-specific region in target browsers. |
| Content is missing intermittently | Images, fonts, charts, or application data were not ready at capture time. | Wait on the actual assets or data readiness condition, then capture. |
| Long report is clipped or split badly | The direct example fits only a single page, or page-break settings do not suit the content. | Implement page slicing, or configure and test html2pdf.js page-break and margin options with representative content. |
| Text cannot be selected or searched in the PDF | The page was rasterized into a canvas image. | Confirm whether a visual PDF is sufficient; if selectable text is mandatory, choose an output approach that preserves text and test the generated file. |
Performance and cost considerations
Capture work happens in the user’s browser and creates a canvas, then usually an encoded image embedded in the PDF. Large export regions and high pixel density can use substantial memory and take longer to process; keep the captured area intentional, avoid unnecessary scale increases, and test with realistic document lengths on supported devices. The sample’s devicePixelRatio setting favors detail, but reducing scale can reduce output size and work at the cost of sharpness.

The package-based browser pipeline does not make a network API request to create the PDF, though remote assets may be fetched by the page. Its practical cost is client processing and the maintenance of package integration. A URL-based screenshot API has a separate service price and cannot substitute for capturing a private in-memory Angular component without exposing the content through an accessible URL.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can html2canvas capture an Angular component directly?
Yes. Pass the component’s rendered DOM element, obtained through a template reference such as `ViewChild`, to html2canvas after the view exists.
Does the PDF preserve selectable text?
Not necessarily. This pipeline embeds a canvas rendering as an image, so inspect the final PDF if text selection or search is required.
