How to Generate Gujarati PDFs from HTML in Laravel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a PDF renderer that can access a Gujarati-capable font, keep the HTML explicitly UTF-8, and inspect the generated PDF rather than trusting the browser preview. For a PHP-only deployment, Dompdf is convenient but does not implement modern flexbox or grid. If your Blade view depends on browser-level CSS, choose a Chromium-based or other driver documented by your Laravel PDF package. Whichever engine you use, keep the font local, configure it for that engine, and test representative Gujarati text in the actual deployment environment.

1. Choose the renderer before writing the view

Laravel PDF packages are facades over different rendering engines. The engine determines CSS support, external dependencies, font registration, resource loading and operational control. Spatie Laravel PDF documents view rendering and multiple drivers; its current documentation lists PHP 8.2+ and Laravel 11+ for the package. Confirm those requirements against the exact release installed in your application because package requirements change.

Driver approach CSS and layout fit Deployment considerations Gujarati font considerations
Dompdf CSS 2.1 and parts of CSS3; modern flexbox and grid are not supported. PHP-only and avoids a separate browser binary. Simplify layouts to tables, blocks and supported positioning. Provide a local TrueType font with verified Gujarati glyphs and configure the engine to use it.
Chromium-based driver Best choice when the HTML relies on browser-like CSS, flexbox, grid or complex JavaScript. Requires a Chromium runtime, container or hosted rendering service according to the driver. Install or expose the font in the rendering environment and verify the browser process can read it.
WeasyPrint, Gotenberg or other documented drivers Varies by engine; check the package’s driver documentation for supported CSS. May require Python, a service, a container or another external runtime. Follow that engine’s font installation and embedding rules rather than Dompdf’s.
mPDF-based driver Useful when its supported CSS and typography match the document. PHP library with its own font configuration and substitution behavior. Register custom TrueType fonts; use Unicode and OpenType Layout options where supported by your installed version.

If the document is mostly invoices, tables and paragraphs, Dompdf can be a practical starting point. If the same view must reproduce a responsive web page, select a Chromium-based driver instead of redesigning the page around Dompdf’s limitations.

2. Create a minimal Laravel PDF view

Install and verify the package release

Install the Laravel PDF package and driver recommended by its documentation, then confirm the package’s PHP and Laravel requirements. Do not copy a facade example from a different major release without checking its current API.

Render a Blade view

The following is the documented shape for rendering a view with Spatie Laravel PDF. Replace the data object and output path with your application’s values.

<?php

namespace AppHttpControllers;

use IlluminateHttpResponse;
use SpatieLaravelPdfFacadesPdf;

class GujaratiPdfController extends Controller
{
    public function invoice(): Response
    {
        $data = [
            'customer' => 'રમેશ પટેલ',
            'number' => 'INV-2026-001',
            'total' => '₹12,500',
        ];

        $path = storage_path('app/gujarati-invoice.pdf');

        Pdf::view('pdfs.invoice', ['data' => $data])
            ->format('a4')
            ->save($path);

        return response()->download($path, 'gujarati-invoice.pdf')
            ->deleteFileAfterSend(true);
    }
}

Add a route to this controller and create resources/views/pdfs/invoice.blade.php. The exact driver-selection method depends on the package version; use the installed release’s configuration rather than assuming every facade exposes the same driver switch.

Keep the Blade document valid UTF-8

<!doctype html>
<html lang="gu">
<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <style>
        body {
            font-family: 'GujaratiPdf', sans-serif;
            font-size: 14px;
            line-height: 1.55;
        }
        h1 { font-size: 22px; }
        .row { display: table; width: 100%; }
        .label, .value { display: table-cell; padding: 4px 0; }
        .label { width: 35%; font-weight: bold; }
    </style>
</head>
<body>
    <h1>ચલણ</h1>
    <div class="row">
        <div class="label">ગ્રાહક</div>
        <div class="value">{{ $data['customer'] }}</div>
    </div>
    <div class="row">
        <div class="label">નંબર</div>
        <div class="value">{{ $data['number'] }}</div>
    </div>
    <div class="row">
        <div class="label">કુલ</div>
        <div class="value">{{ $data['total'] }}</div>
    </div>
</body>
</html>

The table-cell layout in this example is intentional: it is more portable in Dompdf than flexbox or grid. Escape untrusted values with normal Blade output syntax and keep the document’s source files saved as UTF-8.

3. Supply and register a Gujarati-capable font

Check glyph coverage, not just the font name

Unicode tells the renderer how characters are encoded; it does not supply glyphs or guarantee correct Gujarati shaping. Choose a TrueType or another format supported by your engine, verify that it contains the Gujarati block and the conjuncts and vowel marks used by your content, and test the exact regular, bold and italic weights you plan to use. A generic sans-serif fallback may render Latin text while producing empty boxes or incorrect Gujarati marks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dompdf’s Unicode guidance describes UTF-8 HTML and TrueType fonts, and notes that its bundled DejaVu fonts cover many scripts. That broad coverage should not be treated as proof of Gujarati coverage or shaping quality. A Gujarati-specific font such as Noto Sans Gujarati can be used as a test candidate, but verify the generated PDF in your own renderer and version.

Keep the font local

Place the font files in an application-readable directory, for example resources/fonts or a published local font directory. Local files make production rendering repeatable and avoid network failures. In your selected engine, register the family and each weight according to its documented configuration. The CSS family name must match the registered name.

For a Dompdf-style HTML view, the conceptual CSS is:

<style>
@font-face {
    font-family: 'GujaratiPdf';
    font-style: normal;
    font-weight: 400;
    src: url('file:///absolute/path/to/NotoSansGujarati-Regular.ttf') format('truetype');
}
@font-face {
    font-family: 'GujaratiPdf';
    font-style: normal;
    font-weight: 700;
    src: url('file:///absolute/path/to/NotoSansGujarati-Bold.ttf') format('truetype');
}
body { font-family: 'GujaratiPdf', sans-serif; }
</style>

Use the path and registration mechanism required by your package; do not leave an example absolute path in production. If you use a Laravel helper to generate the path, ensure the resulting URL is readable by the renderer process, not merely by PHP-FPM.

Be deliberate about remote resources

Laravel’s Dompdf configuration documents remote-resource loading as disabled by default. A remote stylesheet or font URL can therefore work in a browser and silently disappear in PDF generation. Prefer local assets. If a remote resource is unavoidable, enable remote loading only through the package’s documented configuration, restrict the destinations where appropriate, and test the security and deployment implications. Remote access also introduces DNS, TLS, latency and availability failures.

4. Test Gujarati in the generated PDF

Browser success is not a PDF test. A user issue reported on July 2, 2024 described Gujarati HTML that did not match the resulting Dompdf output even when Noto Sans Gujarati was specified. It is one report, not proof that every Dompdf version fails, but it demonstrates why the final file must be inspected.

Build a representative fixture

  • Include words with joined consonants and dependent vowel marks, not only isolated Gujarati letters.
  • Include Gujarati punctuation and numerals used by your invoices or reports.
  • Mix Gujarati with Latin names, URLs and currency values if production documents do so.
  • Render regular and bold text, table cells, headings and a page break.
  • Include the longest realistic strings to expose wrapping and clipping problems.

Inspect more than one viewer

Open the generated PDF in the viewers your recipients use. Check visible glyphs, mark placement, line spacing, page breaks and whether copied text remains meaningful. A PDF can look acceptable while containing an incorrect text layer, or copy correctly while displaying missing glyphs. Keep a known-good fixture in automated or release testing and regenerate it after changing the engine, font, operating system or container image.

5. Troubleshoot common failures

Boxes, blank glyphs or tofu characters

Cause: The selected font lacks Gujarati glyphs, the file is unreadable, or the renderer fell back to a font without coverage. Fix: inspect the font file, register the correct family and weight, use a local readable path, and confirm the CSS family name exactly matches the registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gujarati marks are misplaced or conjuncts differ from HTML

Cause: Different engines have different shaping support; Unicode encoding alone cannot guarantee the same result as a browser. Fix: test the chosen driver with your fixture, try a renderer with stronger browser-like shaping when necessary, and avoid declaring the output correct until the PDF itself has been reviewed.

Font works locally but disappears in production

Cause: The deployed file was omitted, permissions prevent the worker from reading it, or a remote URL is blocked by default. Fix: package the font with the application or container, verify permissions as the rendering user, use a local path, and check the deployed renderer configuration.

Layout collapses or content overlaps

Cause: Dompdf does not support modern flexbox and grid layouts as a browser does. Fix: replace those sections with supported block and table layouts, or move the document to a Chromium-based driver documented by your package.

Stylesheets or images are missing

Cause: Relative paths resolve differently from a browser, or remote loading is disabled. Fix: use renderer-readable local paths, embed critical CSS in the view, and configure remote resources only when required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generation times out or consumes excessive memory

Cause: Very large images, long tables, complex CSS, remote requests or a browser process that cannot start in the deployment environment. Fix: reduce image dimensions, paginate large data sets, remove unnecessary remote assets, set an appropriate job timeout, and move heavy work to a queue. Record the engine version and input URL or view data with failures so the same document can be reproduced.

The facade or driver method is unavailable

Cause: Documentation for a different package or major version was copied. Fix: inspect the installed package’s configuration and API, confirm PHP and Laravel requirements, and use that release’s driver setup instructions.

6. Reliability, performance and operating cost

  • Deterministic assets: bundle fonts, CSS and images whenever possible. Every network dependency is another source of latency and failure.
  • Warm workers carefully: queue PDF jobs for large reports, but monitor memory because some engines retain document state between jobs.
  • Cache only stable inputs: cache a PDF when the view data, font files and engine version are unchanged; invalidate it when any of those inputs changes.
  • Observe the output: log generation duration, file size, engine errors and the document identifier. Keep the original HTML or data needed to reproduce a failed file without logging sensitive personal data.
  • Choose infrastructure consciously: PHP-only rendering reduces external services, while Chromium or hosted rendering can improve CSS fidelity at the cost of a runtime or service dependency.

There is no universal Gujarati compatibility guarantee across package versions. Treat a renderer change, font update or operating-system image change as a release event and rerun the fixture.

Or skip the browser setup

If the page is publicly reachable and you need a rendered capture rather than a Laravel-managed, data-bound PDF, ScreenshotNeo provides a URL screenshot/PDF API. One GET request is enough; the API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its cleanup steps accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

For a direct call, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same endpoint can be called from Python or Node.js:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. It supports full-page capture, selector-based elements, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, device and viewport settings, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, PDF paper options, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture. Every feature is on every plan: 1,000 shots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

7. A release checklist

  1. Confirm the Laravel, PHP, PDF package and driver versions supported by your deployment.
  2. Decide whether the document’s CSS requires a browser-like engine or fits Dompdf’s supported layout.
  3. Save Blade, CSS and font files as UTF-8 and keep the font locally available.
  4. Register every required Gujarati font weight and set an explicit family in the view.
  5. Render a fixture containing conjuncts, marks, punctuation, mixed scripts and realistic tables.
  6. Open the produced PDF in the target viewers and test visible text and copied text.
  7. Repeat the test after changing fonts, engines, container images or resource-loading settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does setting <meta charset="UTF-8"> solve Gujarati PDF output by itself?

No. UTF-8 preserves character encoding, but the renderer still needs a readable font containing the required Gujarati glyphs and adequate shaping support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a browser screenshot service for every Laravel PDF?

No. Use your Laravel PDF driver when you need authenticated data, server-side templates or controlled document generation. A URL capture service is an alternative for publicly reachable rendered pages.

Can I assume a font that displays Gujarati in Chrome will work in Dompdf?

No. Browser rendering and PDF rendering use different engines. Generate the PDF with the exact production font and driver, then inspect the file.
