Yes. An Airtable button can start a script or an automation that reads the clicked record, sends its fields to a graphics-rendering service, and writes the returned image URL or file into Airtable. Use a Button field with Run script for a quick prototype; use an Interface button with the When a button is clicked automation trigger when API keys, retries and file handling must stay server-side.
Choose the right Airtable button workflow
Airtable offers Button-field actions including Open URL, Open in page designer, Run script, Preview URL, SendGrid, Twilio, Formstack Documents, Pexels and custom-extension actions. For generated graphics, two routes matter:

For either route, add a field that records progress. A practical table has Headline, Subtitle, Brand color, Logo (optional attachment), Graphic URL, Graphic file (attachment), Generation status and Generation error.
Build a Button-field prototype
1. Create the input and output fields
Use single-line or long-text fields for copy, a single-select or text field for the brand color, and an attachment field for a logo. Use a URL field when your renderer returns a durable public URL; use an attachment field when you need the file stored in Airtable.

2. Add the button
- In the grid, add a new field and choose Button.
- Set its action to Run script.
- Open the scripting editor and paste a script adapted to your rendering service.
3. Read the clicked record
When a script is launched from a Button field, the first input.recordAsync call automatically uses the record whose button was clicked. This avoids asking the user to select a second record.

});Replace the endpoint, authentication method and response property with the API you selected. Treat every response as untrusted: check the HTTP status, validate that a URL or file result exists, and update an error field when the call fails.
Client-side security and CORS
Scripting runs client-side. A token embedded in this script can be copied by anyone who can edit or inspect the extension, and the browser may reject the request because of CORS. For a real shared base, send the record data to a server-side webhook or Airtable automation instead. Never put a long-lived provider secret in a Button-field script.

Use an Interface button and automation
1. Create the automation first
- Open Automations and create a new automation.
- Choose the trigger When a button is clicked.
- Select the table and fields needed by the workflow.
- Add an action that runs your server-side webhook or automation script.
- In the Interface, add a button and connect it to this automation.
- Test with a sample record, then turn on the automation. Airtable’s documented order is to create the automation, connect the Interface button, and only then enable it.
2. Send a minimal, explicit payload
Pass a record identifier and the fields needed to render. Sending a stable template name plus structured values is safer than concatenating unescaped HTML in the client.

3. Write the result back
Use an Airtable “Update record” action after the render call. Map image_url to Graphic URL, set Generation status to Complete and clear Generation error. If your endpoint returns binary data, have the server upload it to storage and return a durable URL that Airtable can fetch. For an attachment field, provide an object containing the returned URL (and optionally a filename) through the Airtable update API or an automation action that accepts attachments. Do not assume a temporary provider URL will remain valid.
Make the graphic repeatable
Define a template contract
- Set fixed dimensions and output format (PNG, JPEG or WebP) in the renderer.
- Limit headline and subtitle lengths or define truncation rules.
- Validate colors as approved hex values before sending them.
- Use a consistent filename such as
{record_id}-{revision}.png. - Store the template version with the record so old graphics can be reproduced.
Prevent duplicate clicks
Set status to Queued before calling the renderer and reject a second request while status is Queued or Processing. Include a record ID and template version as an idempotency key. On success, save the provider job ID and output URL; on failure, save a short error and leave the source fields unchanged.
Preview and built-in alternatives
Add a second Button field with Preview URL so collaborators can inspect the generated image. Airtable also documents a Formstack Documents action that merges record values into a PDF or Word template, and a Pexels action that lets a user search for and attach a selected stock photo. Those actions are useful for templated documents or image sourcing; they are not a general-purpose generative image API.

Troubleshooting
The script says no record was selected
Confirm the script is launched by the Button field and that the first input.recordAsync call references the intended table. If you run the script directly from the extension editor, there may be no clicked-record context; select a record explicitly for testing.
Fetch fails with a CORS error
Move the request to an Airtable automation or server-side webhook. CORS is a browser policy; changing the renderer response alone is not a safe way to hide a secret.
The renderer returns HTTP 401 or 403
Check the authorization header, token scope, endpoint environment and whether the token is expired. Log the provider’s request ID, but do not write the token itself into Airtable.

Inspect the JSON property name and verify that the URL is reachable without an interactive login. Validate the URL before updating Airtable, and use an attachment upload path when the provider’s URL is short-lived.

Large or slow jobs time out
Use an asynchronous provider endpoint: save the job ID, set status to Processing, and let a signed webhook update the record when the file is ready. Add a retry policy with a maximum attempt count and a final Error state.
Users overwrite each other’s output
Key updates by Airtable record ID, not by a mutable headline. Store the request ID and template revision, and ignore a late callback whose revision no longer matches the record.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Airtable button call any image-generation API?
It can call an external service through JavaScript, but the service must accept your request format and authentication. For production, use an automation or webhook so the API key is not exposed in client-side code.
Can Airtable store the generated image itself?
Yes. Save a durable image URL to a URL field, or upload/provide the file URL to an attachment field through your server or Airtable automation. Confirm that the source URL will remain accessible.
