Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo make a PDF page tall enough for all its content in Node.js, choose the output shape first: use Puppeteer with a custom page height for HTML, PDFKit with custom page dimensions for a PDF you draw yourself, or pdf-lib to resize a page in an existing PDF. A single tall page is different from a conventional document that flows across multiple pages; resizing a page does not automatically reflow its contents.
Choose between one tall page and normal pagination
A “full-height PDF” can mean either one continuous page whose height grows to accommodate its content, or a document divided into ordinary pages. The right implementation depends on how the PDF will be read and used.
- Choose one tall page for a receipt, a long web-page capture, or a report that should remain a single continuous sheet.
- Choose standard pages when people will print the document, navigate by page, or expect conventional page breaks.
For HTML and CSS, Puppeteer lets you set PDF dimensions and also honors CSS print rules. For programmatically drawn content, PDFKit lets you define page dimensions directly. For an existing PDF, pdf-lib can change page geometry, but changing the boundary alone is not the same as resizing or reflowing the content.
Generate a tall PDF from HTML with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s PDF options accept a paper width and height. Set the page height to a CSS length such as 3000px or 42in. Puppeteer renders PDFs using print CSS by default. If your stylesheet sets the page size with @page, set preferCSSPageSize: true so that CSS page dimensions take precedence over the PDF options.

#1 Best Overall
Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer. The following runnable example opens a page, waits for it to load, then writes one tall PDF page:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
async function main() {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.pdf({
path: 'full-height.pdf',
width: '8.5in',
height: '30in',
printBackground: true,
preferCSSPageSize: false
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Replace the example URL and select a height that suits the rendered content. A fixed height is a chosen page size, not an instruction for Puppeteer to discover the ideal height automatically. If the content exceeds that height, inspect the PDF for clipping and increase the height or use pagination.
Let CSS control the page size
For templates where page dimensions belong in the stylesheet, define a page size in print CSS and tell Puppeteer to prefer it:
@page {
size: 8.5in 30in;
margin: 0.25in;
}
await page.pdf({
path: 'full-height.pdf',
preferCSSPageSize: true,
printBackground: true
});
When preferCSSPageSize is false—the documented default—Puppeteer scales content to fit the configured paper size instead of allowing CSS page sizing to take precedence. Set it to true when the @page dimensions should win. Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() documentation describes the PDF generation behavior and options.
Use screen styles only when the output needs them
PDF generation uses print media by default. If the screen stylesheet produces the intended layout instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf():
await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'screen-layout.pdf', height: '30in', width: '8.5in' });
Check the resulting file: screen and print styles can differ in backgrounds, visibility, spacing, and page-break behavior. Using screen media does not remove the need to set and verify the page dimensions.

Wait for the rendered content before setting dimensions
A page can appear loaded before all application-specific content is ready. Wait for the data, images, fonts, and other assets that determine the final layout before choosing a height or capturing the PDF. Puppeteer documents waitForFonts as true by default for PDF options, but that does not establish that every application’s asynchronous rendering has finished.
For a page with a known readiness signal, wait for it explicitly:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-report-ready="true"]');
await page.pdf({ path: 'report.pdf', width: '8.5in', height: '30in' });
Replace the selector with a marker your page actually sets after its content is ready. Network idleness can be useful, but pages with ongoing requests or delayed client-side rendering may require an application-specific selector or other readiness condition. If a full-height page has blank image areas or missing text, first verify readiness and then check the exported file rather than assuming the PDF height is the cause.
Create a custom-sized PDF with PDFKit
PDFKit is suited to content you draw directly—text, shapes, and images—rather than HTML layout. Its page dimensions can be a predefined paper-size name or a custom [width, height] array in PDF points. There are 72 points per inch, so an 8.5-by-30-inch page is 612 by 2160 points.
Install it with npm install pdfkit. This example creates a custom-height page and streams it to a file:
const PDFDocument = require('pdfkit');
const fs = require('node:fs');
const doc = new PDFDocument({
size: [612, 2160], // 8.5 by 30 inches, in points
margins: { top: 36, right: 36, bottom: 36, left: 36 }
});
doc.pipe(fs.createWriteStream('full-height.pdf'));
doc.fontSize(18).text('A custom-height PDF page', 36, 36);
doc.fontSize(12).text('Add your content at the desired coordinates.');
doc.end();
PDFKit’s document is a readable Node stream: pipe it to a file or HTTP response, and call end() to finish the document. Its first page is created automatically by default; add subsequent pages explicitly if you want a multi-page document. See the official PDFKit getting started guide and paper-size documentation.

Plan the drawing coordinates
A tall page gives you a larger coordinate space; it does not lay out content like a browser or automatically keep manually positioned elements within the visible region. Choose dimensions in points, account for margins, and place content at coordinates that fit the page. For a regular multipage PDF, create additional pages and manage page breaks and content placement in your application.
Resize a page in an existing PDF with pdf-lib
Use pdf-lib when the input is already a PDF and the goal is to change a page’s dimensions. Its PDFPage API provides getHeight(), setHeight(), and setSize(width, height).
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const { PDFDocument } = require('pdf-lib');
async function main() {
const input = await fs.readFile('input.pdf');
const pdf = await PDFDocument.load(input);
const page = pdf.getPage(0);
const width = page.getWidth();
const newHeight = 1200;
page.setSize(width, newHeight);
const output = await pdf.save();
await fs.writeFile('resized.pdf', output);
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
This changes the page size; it does not by itself prove that existing content has been reflowed or fitted into the new area. Content can remain at its previous coordinates or require separate translation or scaling. Inspect the output’s visible content as well as its page boundary. If you need to scale content, treat that as a separate operation from changing the page boxes.
Pick the Node.js approach that matches the input
| Approach | Best fit | How height is controlled | Output considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer | HTML and CSS templates or web pages | PDF height option, or CSS @page with preferCSSPageSize |
Print media is the default; screen media can be selected first. PDF output can be written to a path or returned as bytes. |
| PDFKit | Programmatically drawn PDF content | Custom [width, height] dimensions in points or a predefined paper size |
Readable stream can be piped to a file or HTTP response; call end() to finalize. |
| pdf-lib | Inspecting or modifying an existing PDF | setHeight() or setSize() |
Page geometry changes do not automatically scale or reflow existing content. |
Decide based on what you have as input, whether the result should be one page or paginated, whether browser print CSS controls the layout, whether you need to change geometry or content layout, and whether your application benefits from a PDF byte buffer or a stream.

If your input is a public web page and the goal is a screenshot-style PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return a PDF from one GET request; it is not a replacement for PDFKit drawing or arbitrary editing of an existing PDF. The service removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP server, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
Example cURL request (replace YOUR_API_KEY and set the target URL). See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options, including PDF output:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.pdf
ScreenshotNeo also provides MCP tools called take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. To try the API, sign up for 1,000 free screenshots per month with no card required.

Troubleshoot common full-height PDF problems
Content is clipped at the bottom
A configured height can be shorter than the rendered content. Increase the height or use ordinary pagination, then inspect the PDF. For browser-rendered output, also check CSS page sizing and page-break rules.

If a CSS @page size should control the result, make sure preferCSSPageSize: true is set. With the option false, Puppeteer scales content to fit the configured paper size.
The PDF layout differs from the browser
Puppeteer uses print media by default. Check your print stylesheet and @page rules; if the screen layout is required, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF.
Images or dynamic content are missing
Wait for the application’s data and assets to finish rendering. Use a reliable page-specific readiness selector when available; a completed navigation alone may not signal that client-side content has appeared.
Resizing an existing PDF leaves content misplaced
pdf-lib’s page-size methods change page geometry, not the coordinates or scale of existing content. Separately translate or scale content as needed, and confirm the page boxes and visible output.
A very tall page fails in a viewer or print workflow
The official API documentation does not establish a universal safe maximum for one extremely tall page across Chromium, PDF readers, printers, and deployment targets. Test the complete target stack, including the viewer or printer that will consume the file. If support is inconsistent, use conventional page sizes and pagination.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The official API materials cited here do not establish a credible performance ranking between Puppeteer, PDFKit, and pdf-lib for full-height output. Choose based on input format and layout needs, then test your own content and runtime. Browser rendering involves page loading and rendering before PDF output; PDFKit’s stream interface lets an application pipe output as it is generated; pdf-lib is intended here for altering a PDF’s page geometry.
Puppeteer documents a default PDF options timeout of 30,000 milliseconds. For complex pages, ensure the content is ready within the configured timeout and handle failures in application code. Do not treat that documented default as a guarantee that any page will render within that period. Cost depends on the deployment and workload; the cited library documentation does not provide a comparable per-document price or service benchmark.
Frequently asked questions
Can a PDF page have a custom height?
Yes. Puppeteer accepts a PDF height option, PDFKit accepts custom point dimensions, and pdf-lib can change an existing page’s height or size.
Does increasing page height make an existing PDF’s content bigger?
No. Changing page geometry and scaling or repositioning content are separate tasks. Check the exported page and its visible content.
Is there a documented maximum height for a single PDF page?
The API documentation cited here does not specify a universal safe maximum across browsers, readers, printers, and deployment targets. Validate the dimensions in the environment that will produce and consume the file.
