Hosted JSON services such as Shotstack and Creatomate handle rendering infrastructure; Remotion lets you define every frame in React and render locally or through server and Lambda APIs.
The dynamic-video pipeline
A reliable implementation separates business data from presentation and from rendering. A typical request flows through these stages:
- Prepare data. Build a versioned JSON object containing names, titles, prices, image or video URLs, voice-over references, locale, aspect ratio, and flags for optional scenes.
- Resolve assets. Upload source files to stable, publicly reachable URLs. Validate MIME type, duration, dimensions, and access permissions before submitting a job.
- Select a composition. Use a reusable template when the scene structure is stable, a direct JSON/RenderScript payload when scenes vary, or a React composition when you need programmatic layout and animation.
- Submit a render. Send the composition and data to the provider, and record your own idempotency key, payload hash, and the vendor job ID.
- Track completion. Poll a status endpoint where available or register a webhook for success and failure. Make webhook handling idempotent.
- Validate and deliver. Check the output’s duration, dimensions, frame rate, audio, codec/container, captions, and safe-area cropping before copying it to durable storage or publishing it.
Keep a version of the input data and the exact asset URLs with every job. If a customer asks why a video looked a certain way, you can reproduce the render instead of guessing which image or template was used.

Hosted JSON timeline: Shotstack
Shotstack describes itself as a video, image, and audio editing service that generates media from JSON through a REST API. You arrange an edit, submit it, and receive a file location after rendering. Its template endpoint supports reusable edits, merge fields such as {{ FIRST_NAME }}, and callbacks when rendering completes.

This model suits product feeds, personalized announcements, and other jobs where a fixed timeline contains replaceable text and media. Your application owns the data and delivery logic while the service owns the rendering workers.
Hosted template or scene API: Creatomate
Creatomate’s render endpoint accepts a template ID plus modifications such as text and media substitutions. When the scene count or ordering changes for each record, you can send a direct RenderScript payload instead. Webhook URLs can report successful or failed renders.
Templates are useful when a designer or marketer needs to edit layout without changing application code. RenderScript is more appropriate for completely dynamic compositions.
Code-first React renderer: Remotion
Remotion represents a video as images over time generated by React components and frame numbers. A composition declares width, height, frames per second, and duration. The CLI accepts JSON input props, while server-side and Lambda APIs provide production rendering and progress handling.
Choose Remotion when you need loops, conditional scenes, custom animation, or ownership of the rendering environment. The trade-off is that you must operate a rendering runtime or Lambda deployment, including browser dependencies, capacity, and failure recovery.
| Decision factor | Hosted template/JSON API | Remotion |
|---|---|---|
| Editing by non-developers | Strong fit when layouts are template-based | Requires code changes unless you build an editor |
| Scene expressiveness | Template fields or provider JSON/RenderScript | React logic, loops, conditions, and custom animation |
| Infrastructure | Provider operates render workers | You operate a runtime or Lambda deployment |
| Notifications | Shotstack callbacks and Creatomate webhooks | Server and Lambda APIs expose progress handling |
| Best use | High-volume, repeatable layouts | Programmatic, highly bespoke compositions |
Current comparable prices, quotas, concurrency limits, and latency benchmarks are not established here; verify the provider’s plan and documentation before committing to a volume or service-level assumption.
Define a versioned data contract
Do not pass an unstructured database row directly to a renderer. Define a schema that can evolve independently from your template:
{
"schemaVersion": 1,
"id": "order-1842",
"locale": "en-US",
"aspectRatio": "9:16",
"title": "Your order is ready",
"firstName": "Sam",
"price": "$49.00",
"media": {
"hero": "https://cdn.example.com/assets/hero-v3.jpg",
"voiceover": "https://cdn.example.com/audio/order-1842.mp3"
},
"scenes": {
"showDiscount": true,
"items": ["Blue jacket", "Canvas shoes"]
}
}
Use JSON-serializable values when passing props to Remotion. Keep conditional decisions explicit (for example, showDiscount) rather than making a template infer business rules from formatted strings. Include locale and aspect ratio early so text wrapping and composition selection are deterministic.

- Use stable HTTPS URLs that the rendering service can fetch without an interactive login.
- Pin an immutable asset version, such as a content hash or versioned path; do not overwrite a file while a job is downloading it.
- Validate MIME type, byte size, duration, and pixel dimensions before submission.
- Keep a manifest of every URL and its checksum with the job payload.
- Treat an asset-download failure as a job failure that can be retried safely; do not silently substitute a different image.
Hosted APIs download source assets during preprocessing. A URL that works in your browser can still fail for a renderer because of authentication, robots controls, redirects, an expired signature, or an unsupported media type.
Render with Remotion locally
The following minimal project demonstrates a complete code-driven render. Install Remotion in a Node.js project, create a composition, and pass JSON props from the command line.
npm install remotion @remotion/cli react react-dom
// src/Video.jsx
import React from 'react';
import {AbsoluteFill, Audio, Img, interpolate, useCurrentFrame, useVideoConfig} from 'remotion';
export const Video = ({title, firstName, imageUrl, audioUrl}) => {
const frame = useCurrentFrame();
const {fps} = useVideoConfig();
const opacity = interpolate(frame, [0, Math.round(fps * 0.5)], [0, 1], {extrapolateRight: 'clamp'});
return (
<AbsoluteFill style={{backgroundColor: '#101828', color: 'white', fontFamily: 'Arial'}}>
<Img src={imageUrl} style={{width: '100%', height: '65%', objectFit: 'cover'}} />
<div style={{padding: 48, opacity}}>
<div style={{fontSize: 34}}>{title}</div>
<div style={{fontSize: 52, fontWeight: 700, marginTop: 18}}>{firstName}</div>
</div>
{audioUrl ? <Audio src={audioUrl} /> : null}
</AbsoluteFill>
);
};
// src/Root.jsx
import React from 'react';
import {Composition} from 'remotion';
import {Video} from './Video';
export const RemotionRoot = () => (
<Composition
id="PersonalizedVideo"
component={Video}
width={1080}
height={1920}
fps={30}
durationInFrames={300}
defaultProps={{title: 'Your update', firstName: 'Friend', imageUrl: 'https://cdn.example.com/hero.jpg', audioUrl: undefined}}
/>
);
npx remotion render src/index.jsx PersonalizedVideo out/video.mp4
--props='{"title":"Your order is ready","firstName":"Sam","imageUrl":"https://cdn.example.com/assets/hero-v3.jpg"}'
For production, move the props into a file or your server-side render request, and validate that each referenced URL is reachable from the render environment. The composition’s width, height, FPS, and duration should be selected for the destination platform rather than changed after rendering.

Submit hosted jobs and process webhooks
Shotstack and Creatomate both document asynchronous rendering flows. Your application should create a job record before making the request, then persist the returned job identifier. Include an idempotency key generated from your business record and template version. If the request times out, retry with the same key instead of creating an untracked duplicate.
Webhook handlers should verify the provider’s signature when one is available, reject unknown job IDs, and return a fast success response before doing heavy storage work. Queue the download and validation step. A repeated success event must not publish the same video twice; store a terminal state and artifact checksum.
If you poll instead, use bounded exponential backoff and a maximum age for jobs. A status that remains pending beyond your operational limit should become an actionable timeout, not an infinite loop.
Create web-page visuals for a video
Web pages are often used as dynamic-video inputs: a pricing page, dashboard, or campaign landing page can become a scene. A browser-based approach gives you control but requires a browser runtime, consent handling, and cleanup of overlays.
DIY browser capture with Playwright
npm install playwright
import {chromium} from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({viewport: {width: 1440, height: 900}, deviceScaleFactor: 1});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle'});
await page.screenshot({path: 'scene.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png'});
await browser.close();
For repeatable output, wait for a meaningful selector, set a fixed viewport and timezone, and hide volatile elements. Consent dialogs, chat launchers, cookie banners, and bot checks can otherwise become part of the scene or prevent capture entirely.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. - Queue work. Accept the customer’s request quickly, then let workers submit and monitor render jobs.
- Control concurrency. Match parallel jobs to your provider quota, CPU, memory, and storage bandwidth rather than launching unlimited renders.
- Use idempotency. Derive a key from record ID, data hash, template version, and output settings.
- Retry selectively. Retry network and temporary provider errors with backoff. Do not retry invalid media, authorization failures, or deterministic template errors until corrected.
- Separate artifacts. Store source manifest, render request, status history, output metadata, and the final media object separately.
- Budget storage and egress. Render output can be much larger than the JSON request. Apply retention rules only after delivery requirements are satisfied.
Do not promise a fixed render time without measurements for your own compositions and plan. Rendering duration varies with scene complexity, source media, output settings, queue depth, and provider capacity.
Validate every output before publishing
Automated checks should fail a job when:
- the file cannot be decoded or has the wrong container or codec;
- duration, dimensions, or frame rate differ from the requested profile;
- audio is missing, silent, clipped, or out of sync;
- captions are absent, unreadable, or outside the platform’s safe area;
- text is clipped after localization or a long customer name;
- an image is stretched, low resolution, or unexpectedly replaced;
- the output URL is temporary and has not been copied to durable storage.
Keep a small visual regression set containing short names, long names, missing optional media, multiple items, every supported locale, and each aspect ratio. Render it whenever a template or component changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
The renderer cannot download an image or audio file
Check that the URL is publicly reachable from outside your network, returns the expected MIME type, does not require a browser session, and remains valid for the entire job. Replace mutable paths with immutable versions and record the response status during preflight.
The video contains the wrong text or an old image
Inspect the payload hash and template version saved with the job. Cache invalidation, reused asset URLs, and a worker reading stale database data are common causes. Use versioned asset URLs and an idempotency key tied to the data hash.

A webhook was missed or processed twice
Use polling as a reconciliation process even when webhooks are enabled. Persist each event, make the state transition conditional on the current terminal state, and make artifact publication idempotent.
Localized text is clipped
Measure rendered text or provide flexible containers, test the longest supported strings, and select fonts that exist in the render environment. Do not assume a layout that fits English will fit every locale.
Remotion works locally but fails in production
Compare Node, browser, font, and operating-system dependencies between environments. Confirm that every remote asset is reachable from the production worker and that the worker has enough memory for the selected resolution and concurrency.
The output is technically valid but looks wrong on a platform
Verify aspect ratio, safe areas, caption placement, frame rate, audio loudness requirements, and duration against that platform’s current specifications. Keep platform profiles in configuration rather than scattering values through template code.
FAQ
Can one API request create a different video for every customer?
Yes. Keep a stable composition or template and submit a separate data object for each customer, or generate a composition payload whose scenes are built from that customer’s records. Store the input and output identifiers together.
Should I render synchronously in a web request?
Usually no. Rendering is an asynchronous workload. Enqueue the job, return an application-level ID, and notify the caller through a webhook, polling endpoint, or your own status page.
When is a direct scene script better than a template?
Use a direct JSON or RenderScript payload when scene count, ordering, or media tracks change substantially between records. A template is simpler when the timeline is stable and only fields and assets change.
How do I make a render reproducible months later?
Persist the schema version, complete payload, template or code version, asset URLs and checksums, output settings, and job status history. Copy the final artifact to storage with a retention policy that meets your business needs.
