The dependable automation sequence is: create an App Screenshot Set for each app localization and display target, create an App Screenshot resource for every image, reserve an upload asset, upload it (in parts when required), commit the upload, and poll until App Store Connect finishes processing. Once processing succeeds, set the order and verify the assets before submitting the version.
This article explains that workflow, shows where fastlane fits, and covers the engineering details that prevent rejected or misordered screenshots.
How Apple models screenshots
App Store screenshots are not uploaded as an unstructured folder. They are resources associated with an App Store version localization and an App Screenshot Set. Each set is keyed by a locale and a display target. Individual images are represented by App Screenshots resources inside that set.

Apple exposes list, read, create, modify, delete and ordering operations for these resources. Your integration should treat the set and its children as a release artifact: create or reconcile them deterministically rather than relying on whatever order a previous run happened to leave behind.

Prerequisites and release inputs
- An App Store Connect API key with the least-privileged role that can manage your app’s version metadata and screenshots. Keep the key ID, issuer ID and private
.p8key in your CI secret store. - The app Store version and its localizations identified in your release configuration.
- A capture pipeline that can drive deterministic screens with XCUITest or equivalent automation.
- A directory of validated image files, organized by locale, display target and intended order.
- Rules for the screenshot content and marketing copy kept outside the UI test code, so translations can be regenerated without rewriting tests.
Apple’s API uses JWT authentication with the key ID, issuer ID and private key. Generate a short-lived token in your build job, never commit the .p8 file, and restrict CI access to the app and role it actually needs.
The direct App Store Connect API workflow
1. Resolve the localization and display target
Start with the App Store version, then locate the version localization for the locale you are producing. For each required display target, read the current screenshot sets and decide whether to update an existing set or create one. Keep this mapping in source control, for example en-US/target-a/001.webp, en-US/target-a/002.webp, and so on. Do not assume that a locale’s set for one target can be reused for another.
2. Create or reconcile an App Screenshot Set
Create an appScreenshotSets resource associated with the localization and the target identifier required by the current App Store Connect API schema. If a matching set already exists, read it and reconcile its children instead of creating duplicates. Store the returned set identifier with the build’s manifest.

For each file, create an appScreenshots resource under the set. Supply the filename and exact file size from the artifact on disk. Keep a manifest containing the resource identifier, filename, byte count, locale, target and intended position. Validate dimensions and file type before this step; discovering an invalid image after reserving an upload wastes a build cycle.

4. Reserve an upload asset
Follow the upload operations returned for the screenshot resource’s asset reservation. A reservation gives you the URLs and headers Apple expects for transferring the file. Treat those instructions as authoritative; do not hard-code an upload host or assume every asset uses the same number of parts.
5. Upload the bytes, including multipart parts when instructed
For a single-part upload, send the file bytes exactly as specified by the reservation. For a multipart upload, split the file according to the returned part definitions, preserve each part’s required headers, and record successful parts so retries can resume safely. Use bounded retries with backoff for transient network failures, but do not silently retry a part after the reservation has expired.
6. Commit the upload
After all parts succeed, call the commit operation described by the reservation. A successful transfer is not the same as a processed screenshot: commit only after every expected part has completed and your manifest contains the required checksums or response metadata.

7. Poll processing and handle rejection
Read the screenshot resource until processing reaches a successful state. Processing is asynchronous, so make it an explicit CI stage with a timeout. If Apple reports failure, retain the response, filename and target in the build log, correct the source asset, and create a fresh reservation when required. Fail the release job rather than publishing a partially processed set.

8. Set the display order and verify
Use Apple’s ordering operation to send the resource identifiers in the intended sequence. Then read the set again and verify that the returned order, filenames and processing states match your manifest. App Store Connect displays an ordered set; filesystem order or upload completion order is not a reliable substitute.
Designing a repeatable capture pipeline
Deterministic UI states
Drive the same account state, feature flags, date/time settings and network fixtures on every run. Capture only after the screen reaches a known state. Separate screenshot copy and locale data from navigation code so a translation change does not alter the test flow.
Directory and manifest conventions
A stable convention such as locale/display-target/screenshot-order makes discovery, review and cleanup predictable. Include a machine-readable manifest with the source commit, locale, target, filename, byte size, dimensions and intended order. Archive the generated files and manifest with every release candidate.
Coverage and validation
- Generate every display target required by the version, not only the simulator you used locally.
- Validate pixel dimensions, orientation, color mode and accepted file type before API calls.
- Check that no image is accidentally duplicated or omitted in a locale.
- Keep marketing text within the image-generation step so the same capture can be rendered for multiple languages.
Using fastlane instead of writing the uploader
fastlane is practical when you want a ready-made capture-and-delivery pipeline tied to Xcode UI tests. snapshot automates captures on multiple simulators and in multiple languages, can run captures concurrently, and writes images to fastlane/screenshots. A lane can then combine capture_screenshots with upload_to_app_store; deliver can upload screenshots and metadata.

Choose the direct route when your release system already has an artifact service or needs custom upload retries. Choose fastlane when reducing integration code and reusing Xcode UI tests matters more than bespoke orchestration.

Concurrency without rate-limit surprises
Capture locales and targets concurrently when simulator capacity allows, but serialize or cap upload workers. A queue with per-resource retry state is safer than launching every reservation at once. Preserve each reservation’s expiration and stop workers that can no longer finish within it.

Make a rerun safe: identify the localization and target, compare the desired manifest with existing resources, delete or replace only stale children, and never rely on numeric IDs or upload order. A failed processing check should be restartable without duplicating an entire set.

Observability
Log locale, target, resource ID, reservation time, part results, commit response and final processing state. Redact JWTs, private-key material and signed upload URLs. Keep the original image and manifest so a rejected asset can be reproduced exactly.
Common failures and fixes
