You can create a diagram-like image in ChatGPT by describing the visual you want, then checking and revising the result in the conversation or image editor. Give ChatGPT the diagram’s purpose, components, labels, relationships, visual hierarchy, and desired aspect ratio. Treat the output as an image to review—not as a technically verified diagram: OpenAI does not publish a diagram-accuracy guarantee, and text, arrows, or spatial relationships may need correction.

What ChatGPT can make—and what it does not guarantee

ChatGPT Images can create a new image from a text description and edit an image you generated or uploaded. That makes it useful for producing a visual explanation, a rough process illustration, a concept map, or a presentation graphic. You can request labels and details and choose the image’s aspect ratio.

The result is a generated image, not necessarily an editable diagram document. The OpenAI materials for ChatGPT Images do not promise editable nodes, fixed geometry, technically exact connections, or reliable rendering of every requested label. There is also no published diagram-accuracy benchmark in the reviewed official material. If the visual will communicate a safety procedure, system architecture, data flow, or other information where a wrong label or arrow could mislead someone, verify every element before using it.

For a diagram that must remain structurally editable or precisely arranged, make the layout in a dedicated diagramming tool instead. ChatGPT can still help you plan the content or create a visual reference, but do not assume the generated image can be converted into a precise, editable diagram.

How to generate a diagram image in ChatGPT

  1. Open image creation

In a ChatGPT conversation, ask it to create an image. Alternatively, select More, then Images. OpenAI’s help page describes image creation as available on web, iOS, and Android across all tiers. Availability of particular features can change, so check the controls shown in your account.

  2. Describe the diagram’s job and contents

Begin with what the image should explain and who will use it. List each component and its exact label, then state how the components relate: order, direction, grouping, branching, or hierarchy. Specify the visual style, contrast, and aspect ratio. These are practical prompting choices, not an official or validated OpenAI diagram recipe.

  3. Generate the first version

Submit the request and wait for the image. OpenAI notes that generation can take a few minutes depending on the request’s complexity. Avoid treating the first result as final when labels or relationships carry meaning.

  4. Inspect content and relationships

Read every label exactly, follow each arrow from its start to its endpoint, and compare the grouping and sequence to your intended meaning. Check that the visual hierarchy makes the important parts easy to distinguish and that nothing essential is cropped or obscured.

  5. Revise and inspect again

Ask for a change in the conversation, or open the image editor, select an area, and describe the edit. Selection can be imprecise, and an edit may affect more than the selected area. Review the entire diagram after each localized change, not just the region you targeted.

  6. Set the framing and save

Choose an aspect ratio with the picker or specify it in your prompt—for example, 16:9 for a wide slide. Generated images are saved automatically in the Images area. The documented controls let you copy, save, or share the result.

Write a prompt that makes the relationships explicit

A useful prompt distinguishes the diagram’s meaning from its visual treatment. Specify the subject and audience first, then list the required elements and how they connect. When text must be exact, mark it as exact and ask for no additional labels. Add style and framing instructions after the content so that decoration does not take priority over the structure.

For example, adapt this editorial prompt to your subject:

Create a clean left-to-right process diagram for [audience] explaining [process]. Show these steps in this order: [step 1], [step 2], [step 3]. Use these exact labels: “[label 1],” “[label 2],” and “[label 3].” Connect each step with a clear arrow pointing left to right. Do not add other words, steps, or branches. Use a restrained two-color palette, strong contrast, generous spacing, and a 16:9 layout.

This is an example prompt, not a formula whose accuracy has been established by OpenAI. For a different diagram, replace the left-to-right sequence with the actual relationships you need—such as a central concept with grouped branches, or a decision point with separately labeled outcomes. If the distinction matters, state what should not be connected as well as what should.

Useful details to include

  • Purpose and audience: Say whether the image is for a quick overview, a slide, a lesson, or another use.
  • Required parts: Enumerate boxes, stages, actors, or concepts, and provide their labels.
  • Relationships: Describe order, direction, grouping, hierarchy, and branches in words.
  • Visual hierarchy: Identify which item should be most prominent and which items should be visually subordinate.
  • Constraints: State the aspect ratio, palette, background, and any elements or extra text to avoid.

Check accuracy before relying on the image

Image generation can create a plausible-looking visual without establishing that its technical content is correct. Check the image against your source material or intended process, not against how polished it appears.

  • Confirm spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and every requested label.
  • Trace each arrow or connector and make sure it represents the intended direction and relationship.
  • Verify the number and order of steps, branches, groups, and decision outcomes.
  • Check that proximity or color does not accidentally imply a relationship you did not intend.
  • Inspect the whole image after edits; a targeted change may spill outside its selected region.
  • For high-consequence or technically exact material, have a knowledgeable person verify the diagram or rebuild it in a structured tool.

There is no official accuracy percentage or guarantee for diagram labels, connections, or spatial relationships in the reviewed OpenAI guidance. Do not present the image as verified simply because it looks clear.

Choose conversational or editor-based revisions

There are two documented ways to revise an image, and the better choice depends on whether the change is broad or localized.

Revision method Use it when Important limitation
Ask for an edit in the conversation You need to describe a change in context, such as changing the palette or asking for a different overall layout. Inspect the full result to confirm the revision preserved the other required parts.
Select an area in the image editor and describe an edit You want to point to a particular region before explaining the change. The selection is not always precise, and edits can extend beyond the selected area.

Neither approach removes the need to recheck the complete diagram. If a small edit changes the meaning of a connector or label, compare the result against your original requirements before keeping it.

Set the aspect ratio for where the image will appear

Use the aspect-ratio picker or ask for a ratio in the prompt. A wide ratio such as 16:9 may suit a slide, while a taller composition may fit a vertical page or mobile-oriented layout. Treat the ratio as framing guidance, not as a guarantee that every element will fit correctly. After generation, check margins, legibility, and whether any labels or branches sit too close to an edge.

Find and use the generated image

Created images are automatically saved in ChatGPT’s Images area. The documented controls let you copy, save, and share an image. Before sharing or embedding it, inspect the saved version rather than relying on a preview, especially if the image contains small text or fine connectors.

What changed with DALL·E in ChatGPT

OpenAI’s release notes state that the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT was retired on August 30, 2026, and point users to ChatGPT Images for continued image creation and editing. User-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected by that retirement. For a new diagram image, the documented route is to create it through ChatGPT Images or ask for image creation in a conversation rather than looking for the retired official DALL·E GPT.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo does not generate diagrams; it captures a webpage as an image or PDF. If you have already published a diagram on a webpage and need a screenshot of that page, one GET request can capture it without setting up a browser automation workflow. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept the cookie or consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
