The safest way to free up space in Windows 11 is to start with Settings > System > Storage, identify what is consuming the drive, and then clean up in stages. Begin with Cleanup recommendations and temporary files, then remove unused apps, move large personal files, and configure Storage Sense. Avoid manually deleting Windows folders: some “large” system directories are protected for good reason.
1. Check what is using your disk
First open File Explorer > This PC to see how much free space remains on each drive. A drive shown in red is running low, but there is no universal safe free-space number for every computer. A 64GB laptop, a 2TB desktop, and a PC running large games or virtual machines have very different requirements.
For a category breakdown, open Start > Settings > System > Storage. Windows may show categories including:

- Installed apps—programs and games.
- Temporary files—cached files, update cleanup data, thumbnails, and similar items.
- Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop—your personal files.
- Other—files Windows cannot neatly classify.
- System and reserved—Windows, recovery data, virtual memory, reserved storage, and related files.
- Cloud files—locally cached files from services such as OneDrive.
Start with the largest category rather than deleting random files. A large Videos category calls for moving media; a large Installed apps category calls for uninstalling software; a large Other or System and reserved category may require deeper investigation.

2. Use Cleanup recommendations first
Windows 11 provides a guided cleanup screen:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Cleanup recommendations.
- Review Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps.
- Select only items you understand and want to remove.
- Select Clean up for the relevant category.
Do not automatically select everything. In particular, inspect Downloads before cleaning it: it may contain installers, tax documents, photos, or work files. Check the Recycle Bin before emptying it as well.
These actions are not equivalent:
- Deleting a file removes it from its location and may eventually remove it from synchronized cloud storage.
- Making a cloud file online-only removes its local copy but keeps it in the cloud.
- Uninstalling an app removes the application, but may leave saves, settings, caches, or downloaded data behind.
3. Turn on and configure Storage Sense
Storage Sense can perform routine cleanup instead of allowing temporary files and deleted content to grow indefinitely. Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage, turn on Storage Sense, and select it to configure the details.
Depending on your Windows 11 version, you can choose:
- How often Storage Sense runs.
- When Recycle Bin items are removed.
- Whether Downloads files that have not been opened for a selected period are removed.
- When locally available cloud files become online-only.
Use conservative settings if you regularly keep files in Downloads. Storage Sense does not automatically clean every folder, and its ordinary behavior is centered on the system drive, usually C:. To inspect other drives, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.
Storage Sense also needs the device to be signed in and online to run. Microsoft says it cannot run when the user has not been signed in and online for more than 10 minutes. Files it makes online-only can be downloaded again when you have an internet connection and enough local space. Files marked Always keep on this device are excluded from cloud-content management.

4. Remove temporary and system files
Use Windows Settings
Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. Review each category before selecting it. Possible entries include temporary files, Recycle Bin contents, Windows Update Cleanup, Delivery Optimization Files, thumbnails, diagnostic files, and previous Windows installations. The list varies by computer and upgrade history.
Some files will be locked because Windows or an application is using them. That is normal; do not force-delete protected files. If cleanup appears incomplete, restart Windows and check again.
Use Disk Cleanup for additional categories
- Search the taskbar for Disk Cleanup.
- Choose the system drive, normally
C:. - Select the categories you want to remove.
- Select Clean up system files.
- Select the drive again if Windows asks.
- Review the list, then select OK > Delete Files.
Be careful with Previous Windows installation(s)
Cleaning Previous Windows installation(s) removes the Windows.old folder. This can recover considerable space after an upgrade, but it also removes the normal rollback path to the previous Windows version. Delete it only after the upgrade is working correctly and you are certain you will not need to return to the earlier installation. Microsoft says this action cannot be undone through the normal recovery process.
5. Uninstall large apps and games
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Sort by size where that option is available, select the three-dot menu beside an application, choose Uninstall, and follow its uninstaller.

Check large games, creative software, development tools, and programs you no longer use. Before removing licensed software, confirm that you have the account details, license information, and installer needed to restore it.
Uninstalling a launcher does not necessarily delete game libraries. A program may also leave save files, settings, caches, or downloaded content in AppData, Documents, or another library folder. Do not delete those folders blindly; verify what they contain first.
Some Windows components cannot be uninstalled because they are required by the operating system. Microsoft also lists removing unused apps as a way to recover space and reduce unnecessary background activity; see its Windows performance guidance.

6. Move large personal files off the system drive
Look especially at Downloads, Videos, Pictures, Desktop, Documents, recorded gameplay, virtual-machine images, installer files, archives, and project folders. In File Explorer, search for large files or sort a folder by Size.

Copying them while leaving the originals on C: does not free space.
- Move the file or folder to the destination.
- Open it from the destination and verify that it works.
- Only then remove the original, if Windows has not already moved it.
- Keep another backup of irreplaceable photos, documents, and projects.
An external drive is not automatically a backup if it is the only place where the file exists. Also remember that an external drive may be unavailable when you are traveling, and cloud storage depends on internet access and account availability.
To change default locations for future content, open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. Windows lets you choose different destinations for apps, documents, music, pictures, videos, and maps when suitable drives are connected.
7. Free local OneDrive space without deleting files
OneDrive Files On-Demand can keep files visible in File Explorer without keeping every file’s full contents on the system drive.
- Blue cloud icon: online-only; requires an internet connection to open.
- Green check: locally available and using local space.
- Always keep on this device: retained locally until you change the setting.
To remove only the local copy, right-click a OneDrive file or folder in File Explorer and select Free up space. This is different from selecting Delete: deleting a synchronized file can delete it from OneDrive and other synchronized devices.
To enable or check Files On-Demand, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, open Help & Settings > Settings, select the Sync and back up tab, expand Advanced settings, and review Files On-Demand.

8. Advanced ways to recover space
Disable hibernation only if you do not need it
The hibernation file, hiberfil.sys, can be large. On a laptop, however, hibernation may be valuable because it preserves your session while using no battery power. Disabling it also disables hibernation, affects hybrid sleep, and may affect Fast Startup.
Open Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell as administrator and run:
powercfg.exe /hibernate offTo restore hibernation:
powercfg.exe /hibernate onDo not promise a precise amount of recovered space. The file’s size depends on installed memory, the hibernation-file type, and system configuration. A more cautious option retains a reduced file for Fast Startup but does not provide full hibernation:
powercfg /hibernate /size 0
powercfg /hibernate /type reducedMicrosoft documents the hibernation trade-offs and powercfg options.
Clean the Windows component store with DISM
Never manually delete C:WindowsWinSxS. Its apparent size can be misleading because Windows components may be shared through hard links, and deleting files can damage Windows or prevent future updates.

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanupThe more aggressive option is:
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase/ResetBase removes superseded component versions, but existing update packages can no longer be uninstalled afterward. Future updates can still be removed. Use this only when you understand that rollback consequence. See Microsoft’s WinSxS cleanup guidance.
Fix a Temp folder that rapidly refills
If temporary files return immediately, the problem may be a Microsoft Store cache issue rather than ordinary clutter:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Run
wsreset.exe. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Search Settings for Troubleshoot and run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter if it is available.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC and check whether the Temp folder continues growing.
9. If Windows Update still needs more space
Run the built-in cleanup steps, restart the computer, and retry Windows Update. Windows Update may temporarily use system files such as the page file and hibernation file while applying an update, so deleting one small cache may not solve the problem.
If the system drive is still too full:
- Move videos, photos, archives, and other personal files temporarily.
- Uninstall a large unused app or game.
- Run Disk Cleanup and select Clean up system files.
- Connect external storage if Windows offers an external-storage option for the update.
- Do not manually delete update folders or protected Windows directories.

10. What not to delete
C:WindowsWinSxS.C:WindowsInstaller.- Random files under
System32,Windows,Program Files, orProgramData. - The page file or other system files without understanding the consequences.
- OneDrive files that have not been backed up elsewhere.
Use Windows Settings, Disk Cleanup, Storage Sense, app uninstallers, and supported DISM commands instead. If unexpected files are appearing or space is disappearing unusually quickly, run a Windows Security scan rather than deleting files indiscriminately. Organizational policies may also restrict Storage Sense, OneDrive, or app removal on work and school computers.
11. Why free space may not increase immediately
- Deleted files may still be in the Recycle Bin.
- An application may still have a file open.
- OneDrive may still be synchronizing.
- Windows may still be recalculating storage categories.
- The displayed total may refresh after a restart.
- You may have moved a file within the same drive rather than off
C:. - Restore points, update rollback data, virtual memory, and reserved storage may account for the remaining usage.
After cleanup, review the Recycle Bin, restart Windows, recheck Settings > System > Storage and This PC, verify moved files at their destination, and check OneDrive’s sync status. If Windows still shows a large unexplained Other category, a reputable disk-usage visualizer such as WinDirStat, TreeSize, or WizTree can help locate it. Use such tools for diagnosis, not as permission to delete protected folders.

Prevent the problem from returning
- Configure Storage Sense with settings you are comfortable with.
- Review Downloads and Installed apps periodically.
- Save new videos, pictures, projects, and other large content to another drive where appropriate.
- Use OneDrive Files On-Demand for cloud-suitable files, while keeping essential offline copies available.
- Keep at least one independent backup of irreplaceable data.
- On 64GB and 128GB devices, treat capacity as a structural limitation: cleanup helps, but moving data or expanding storage may be the durable solution.
