To forward an email as an attachment, send it as a separate email item rather than quoting its contents in a new message. In classic Outlook for Windows, use Attach File > Attach Item > Outlook Item. In new Outlook and Outlook on the web, drag the message into the draft. The steps depend on which Outlook version you use.
Choose the right Outlook steps
- Classic Outlook for Windows: The traditional desktop app with a full ribbon and commands such as File, Home, Send/Receive, and View.
- New Outlook for Windows: The newer Windows app with a simplified, web-based interface.
- Outlook on the web or Outlook.com: Outlook opened in a browser.
Microsoft documents different feature coverage for new and classic Outlook, so a command shown in one may not appear in the other. See Microsoft’s Outlook feature comparison.
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open Outlook and select New Email.
- On the message window’s ribbon, choose Attach File.
- Select Attach Item, then Outlook Item.
- Choose the folder containing the email, select the message, and choose Insert.
- Check that the message appears in the draft as an attachment. Add recipients and a brief explanation, then select Send.
Microsoft’s instructions list Attach Item > Outlook Item for attaching a message in supported desktop versions, including Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021. See Microsoft’s attachment instructions.
In some desktop builds, you can also select an email in the message list and drag it into a new message window. Treat that as an alternative: behavior can vary with the Outlook build, account, and window arrangement.

New Outlook for Windows
- Select New mail, or open a reply or forward draft.
- Find the message you want to attach in the message list.
- Drag the message into the draft. Wait until Outlook displays Drop messages here, then release it.
- Confirm that the message appears as an attachment. Add recipients and context, then send.
This is Microsoft’s documented method for attaching an email in new Outlook. Microsoft’s instructions for attaching files and messages cover the drag-and-drop workflow.
Outlook on the web and Outlook.com
- Create a new message or open the draft you want to use.
- Open the source email in a separate window using Open in new window.
- Arrange the draft and message list so both are visible. Select the specific message you want to send.
- Drag it into the draft. Release it when Outlook shows Drop messages here.
- Check the attached message before sending.
For this web workflow, Microsoft’s instructions say to select the messages to attach and drag them into the draft. Multiple-message selection is documented for the web workflow; do not assume it behaves identically in every desktop version. See Microsoft’s web and new Outlook attachment steps.

Attachment or ordinary forward?

A standard forward is not the same as forwarding as an attachment. Microsoft says a standard forward includes the original message and its attachments; a reply normally does not include the original attachments. Read Microsoft’s explanation of replies and forwards. “Attach as copy” is also different: that option concerns ordinary OneDrive or SharePoint files, not attaching an email as a message item.

The recipient gets a copy of the selected message attached to your new email; this does not move or delete the original in your mailbox. The attached item can provide the original sender, recipients, date, subject, and message content, but do not assume every header, property, or detail will display identically in every mail client.

For an email attached as an Outlook item, inspect the result before sending, especially if the original has files attached. A conventional forward is documented to include the original message and its attachments, but an attached message may be displayed or handled differently by the recipient’s software.
Tell the recipient why you are sending it and what to do next. For example: “I’ve attached the original email so you can review the full message and its context. Please confirm the delivery date noted in it.”

If the option or drag-and-drop does not work
“Attach Item” is missing
- Check whether you are using new Outlook or Outlook in a browser; the classic desktop menu path may not be available there.
- In classic Outlook, open the draft in its own desktop message window and look under Attach File > Attach Item.
- If the command is unavailable, try dragging the message into a draft. If necessary, save or export the message as an email file and attach that file instead.
Dragging the message does nothing
- Open the message and draft in separate windows and place them side by side.
- Drag from the message list, not from selected text inside the message.
- Select the message first, then drag it; wait for Drop messages here before releasing.
- In a browser, make sure the draft is open in compose mode. If the method still fails, try another supported Outlook version.
The wrong message was attached
Conversation view can group multiple emails together. Expand the conversation if needed, select the individual message you intend to share, and verify its sender, subject, and timestamp in the draft. Do not assume that selecting a conversation attaches every message in it.
The recipient cannot open the attachment
Compatibility depends on the recipient’s mail app, device, and organization’s security controls. If they cannot open the attached message, consider a normal forward, a PDF printout, or relevant text in the body. An .eml or .msg file may help only if the recipient’s software supports that format. For sensitive material, use an approved secure-sharing method rather than assuming an email attachment or link is appropriate.

The same email-item attachment workflow may not be available in Outlook’s mobile apps. If you need to send the original email as an item and cannot find the control, use Outlook on the web or a desktop version instead.
Check privacy and safety before sending
- Confirm every recipient is meant to see the original message.
- Review it for confidential details, internal addresses, signatures, and information that may not be obvious in the thread.
- Check any files attached to the original email. Do not open suspicious attachments just to forward them.
- Follow workplace rules, confidentiality agreements, and applicable data-protection requirements.
Email attachments can carry malware. Microsoft advises caution and recommends opening attachments only when you trust the sender and content. Read Microsoft’s attachment safety guidance.
