1. Reload the screen and verify connectivity
Open the YouTube tab where images are missing—Home, Subscriptions, You or a search result—and pull down until the reload indicator appears. Wait for the feed to finish loading. A stale feed can leave text in place while image requests fail.

Check that Safari can open a normal website. If you are using cellular data, open Settings > Cellular and make sure the switch for YouTube is enabled. YouTube’s iOS offline guidance specifically recommends checking connectivity, confirming cellular access for YouTube when applicable, reloading the screen and restarting the app.
2. Test Wi‑Fi and cellular independently
- On Wi‑Fi, turn off Wi‑Fi in Settings > Wi‑Fi or Control Center, then reload YouTube over cellular.
- On cellular, join a trusted Wi‑Fi network and reload the same feed.
- Record whether thumbnails appear on either connection.
If images work on one connection but not the other, the symptom is connection-specific rather than evidence that your iPhone display is defective. The comparison does not identify the exact network setting responsible, so do not jump straight to DNS changes, a new router or a network extender.

3. Refresh YouTube and iOS
Update YouTube
Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and install any pending YouTube update. YouTube includes updating the app among its official iPhone and iPad troubleshooting steps for loading and playback problems. The guidance is not a thumbnail-specific guarantee, but an outdated app is a low-risk possibility to eliminate.
Force-close and reopen the app
Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause (or double-press the Home button on older iPhones), locate YouTube, then swipe its card upward. Reopen YouTube and reload the affected tab. Force-closing is useful when the current app session has stalled; it does not repair a connection that is failing outside YouTube.
Restart the iPhone
Power the iPhone off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again. Then open YouTube before changing other settings. A restart clears a temporary app or network state without deleting YouTube data.

4. Offload and reinstall YouTube
If thumbnails remain absent after the simpler checks, use YouTube’s published offload path:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap YouTube.
- Tap Offload App and confirm.
- When iOS finishes, tap Reinstall App (the button may show a cloud/download icon) and open YouTube.
Apple distinguishes offloading from deleting. Offloading removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data; deleting removes the app and its related data. Cached and temporary data may not appear fully in the storage total, so offloading is not simply a named “clear cache” command, but it gives the app a fresh installation while preserving supported data.
If offloading does not help, you can delete YouTube and install it again from the App Store. Deletion is more disruptive: expect to sign in again and lose app data that was not synchronized. Use it only after offloading and the connection tests.

5. Isolate the scope with Safari and account comparisons
App versus Safari
Open youtube.com in Safari and view the same channel or feed. If Safari shows thumbnails while the app does not, the issue is likely confined to the app installation or its current session. If both lack images on the same connection, a broader connection or service problem is more plausible. These are diagnostic inferences, not official thumbnail-specific tests.
Signed-in versus signed-out
In Safari, compare the page while signed in and in a private tab while signed out. In the app, avoid repeatedly signing out if you need offline downloads or account settings. A difference between sessions narrows the scope to account or personalization state, but it does not prove that YouTube has a permanent account fault. A YouTube Help Community report describes an account-specific thumbnail symptom from one user; that anecdote cannot establish a general cause.

Ask whether other YouTube elements load: channel avatars, video playback, comments and search results. If only thumbnails are missing while playback works, continue with the app and connection steps above. If multiple apps cannot load images or websites, troubleshoot the connection generally rather than treating YouTube thumbnails as an iPhone hardware problem.

Do not reset all network settings for this isolated symptom. Apple’s Reset Network Settings action removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and can remove some VPN settings. It is a disruptive recovery step for broader network failures, not a harmless thumbnail cache clear. If you eventually use it, record your Wi‑Fi credentials and VPN details first: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
