If YouTube will not switch to full screen in Safari, first open the video directly on YouTube and test another video. On a Mac, reload the page, then try a Safari Private Window; if that works, check extensions, content blockers, and YouTube’s stored website data. Update macOS if the problem persists. On iPhone or iPad, use the video’s full-screen control or swipe up, then turn the device sideways. These steps differ because Safari’s Mac and mobile controls are not the same.
First check whether the video is embedded
A YouTube video inside a news site, blog, or other webpage is controlled partly by that host page. Some embedded players do not offer a Full screen option, so a missing button does not by itself mean Safari is broken. YouTube notes that videos on other websites may not provide full screen: YouTube’s full-screen instructions.
- Look for the video title, YouTube logo, or a “Watch on YouTube” link.
- Open the video on youtube.com and test the Full screen button there.
- If full screen works on YouTube but not in the original page, use the YouTube page or contact the site hosting the embed; changing Safari settings may not alter that player’s restrictions.
Try the basic Mac controls
On YouTube itself, click the video to reveal its controls, then click the Full screen icon at the lower-right of the player. You can also double-click the video to enter or leave full screen. Reload with Command-R and test more than one video so you can tell whether the issue is limited to one page or player. YouTube documents the desktop controls at Watch videos in full screen mode.

Use a Private Window to narrow down the cause
- In Safari, choose File > New Private Window (or press Shift-Command-N).
- Open YouTube, play a video, and try full screen.
If it works in the Private Window but not in your regular window, the result points toward session data, an extension, or privacy-related behavior; it does not prove Safari itself is defective or identify the cause. Apple describes Private Browsing at Browse privately in Safari on Mac.
Check extensions and YouTube’s content-blocker setting
Ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and video-enhancement extensions can interfere with a player. Disable extensions temporarily, reload YouTube, and test full screen. If that resolves it, re-enable extensions one at a time and test again to find the conflict.

- Choose Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Temporarily deselect the extensions, then reload YouTube and test.
- For a site-specific test, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Content Blockers, find YouTube, and turn its blocker off temporarily.
Turning off a blocker reduces its protection while disabled. Restore it after testing if it is not the cause. Apple provides guidance for Safari troubleshooting and Safari website settings.

If Private Browsing works and disabling extensions does not explain the difference, stale or damaged site data may be involved. Removing it can sign you out of YouTube or reset site preferences, so be prepared to sign in again. This targeted step is less disruptive than clearing all browsing history.

- Choose Safari > Settings > Privacy.
- Click Manage Website Data and search for YouTube or Google.
- Select the relevant entries, click Remove, then Done.
- Reopen YouTube in a regular window and test again.

- JavaScript: YouTube’s player interface may need JavaScript. Check Safari’s security settings if the controls fail to load or respond.
- Content Blockers: Confirm YouTube is not blocked under Safari > Settings > Websites > Content Blockers.
- Auto-Play: Check the YouTube entry under Safari > Settings > Websites > Auto-Play if playback does not start or the player controls fail to initialize. Auto-Play is not the same setting as full screen, but can help diagnose a player that is not starting correctly. See Stop autoplay videos in Safari on Mac.
- Advanced privacy protections: If the earlier tests fail, temporarily test whether a privacy setting affects YouTube. Prefer a site-specific change where Safari offers one, and restore stronger protections if the test makes no difference.
- Pop-up behavior: Review it only if the site is trying to open a separate player window; it is not a general fix for the YouTube full-screen button.

Update macOS, which updates Safari
Safari on Mac is updated through macOS rather than as a separate browser download. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, install available updates, and restart if prompted. Apple explains this update path in If Safari doesn’t work as expected on Mac.

Fix full screen on iPhone or iPad
The mobile controls and gestures differ from Mac. YouTube’s instructions for full screen on iPhone and iPad describe tapping the Full screen control or swiping upward on the video, then turning the device horizontally for landscape viewing.
- Tap the video to show its controls, then tap the Full screen control or swipe up on the video.
- Turn the iPhone or iPad horizontally. If the display does not rotate, check that orientation lock is off.
- Open the video directly on YouTube rather than in an embedded player.
- Close and reopen the Safari tab. If it still fails, compare playback in the YouTube app and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.

If the problem continues
After testing direct YouTube playback, several videos, a Private Window, disabled extensions, targeted site-data removal, and current macOS, stop repeating the same steps. Compare the same video in another browser: if it works there but reproducibly fails in Safari, you have narrowed the issue to Safari or its interaction with that page. Note whether the failure affects every video or only one and report those details through the relevant support channel. For a temporary larger view, YouTube Theater mode keeps the webpage visible; it is not true full screen.
