If Excel’s Wrap Text option is enabled but only one line is visible, the row is usually too short. Select the affected cells, choose Home → Format → AutoFit Row Height, and, if necessary, widen the column. If that does not solve it, check for merged cells, long uninterrupted text, Edit mode, worksheet protection, and conflicting alignment settings.
The fastest fix
- Select the affected cell or range.
- On the Home tab, select Wrap Text in the Alignment group.
- With the cells still selected, choose Home → Format → AutoFit Row Height.
You can also double-click the boundary below the row number. Excel should increase the row height so the wrapped lines are visible. Wrap Text changes how the value is displayed; it does not move the content into neighboring cells or change the underlying value. The line breaks adjust when you change the column width.
If Wrap Text is already highlighted, clicking it again is unlikely to help. Continue with the checks below.

Why Wrap Text appears not to work
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |

Fix a row that will not expand
Wrapping can be working internally while a manually fixed row height hides the additional lines.
- Select the affected cells, or select the entire affected row by clicking its row number.
- Choose Home → Format → AutoFit Row Height.
- If AutoFit does not produce the layout you want, choose Home → Format → Row Height and enter a larger height, or drag the boundary below the row heading downward.
Applying the command to the full row or full affected range can help when neighboring cells have inconsistent formatting. A hidden or nearly collapsed row, filter, or outline can also make a successful height change difficult to see.
AutoFit is convenient, but it can create very tall or inconsistent rows in a report. For a controlled layout, use a deliberate manual height and revisit it whenever the content changes.

Check merged cells
Merged cells are a common reason wrapped text remains partly invisible or AutoFit behaves unexpectedly. Excel may not automatically calculate the required height correctly for a merged range.

Make a copy of the workbook or preserve the content before changing the structure. Then test the cell by selecting the range and choosing Home → Merge & Center → Unmerge Cells, if that command is available in your edition. Apply Wrap Text and AutoFit to the unmerged cell.
If the layout needs a heading centered across several columns, consider using a wider single cell or Center Across Selection instead of merging. Unmerging does not mean every cell in the former range contains the same value; the displayed value is generally associated with the upper-left cell, so verify the data before proceeding.

Fix long URLs, IDs, and single words
Wrap Text does not necessarily split a single uninterrupted string. A long URL, tracking code, serial number, email address, or product ID may remain on one line or appear clipped even when wrapping is enabled.
Try these options:
- Widen the column.
- Reduce the font size, while keeping readability in mind.
- Insert a manual line break at a sensible point.
- Move the value to a wider or separate column.
- Use a separate display value if the original code must remain unchanged.
A very narrow column can also make ordinary text wrap into an impractically tall row. In that case, drag the column boundary wider or double-click it to AutoFit the column, then choose a deliberate width for the worksheet design. Microsoft covers these display adjustments in its guidance on adjusting column size.
Insert a manual line break
Use a manual break when you need a specific layout—for example, a heading, address, label, or deliberately formatted code. Manual breaks stay where you insert them; automatic wrapping changes when the column width changes.

Windows desktop Excel
- Double-click the cell, or select it and press F2.
- Place the cursor where the new line should begin.
- Press Alt+Enter.
- Ensure Wrap Text is enabled and AutoFit the row if the new line is not visible.
Excel for Mac
While editing the cell, place the cursor at the desired position and press Control+Option+Return. The exact shortcut can vary with the Mac keyboard or Excel interface, so use the Mac-specific command documented by Microsoft if it does not work.

Check whether Excel is in Edit mode
If the cursor is inside the cell or the formula bar is active, Excel is in Edit mode. Formatting commands such as Wrap Text cannot be changed normally while you are editing the cell.
Press Enter, Esc, or Tab, or click another cell to leave Edit mode. Select the cell again, then apply Wrap Text and AutoFit Row Height. Microsoft explains the distinction in its article on editing cell contents.
Check worksheet protection
A protected worksheet may prevent changes to row height or other formatting. On the Review tab, look for Unprotect Sheet. If you are authorized and have the password, unprotect the sheet, apply the formatting, and protect it again as needed.

If the sheet must remain protected, the owner may need to allow Format rows and Format columns when setting protection. Do not try to bypass a password; contact the workbook owner instead.

Open the cell’s formatting settings by right-clicking it and choosing Format Cells, then select Alignment. Check the following:
- Shrink to fit: This reduces the font size to keep content on one line. Turn it off if you want several visible lines.
- Vertical alignment: Try Top, Center, or Bottom so the text sits where you expect.
- Indentation: Excessive indentation reduces the usable width inside the cell.
- Text rotation: Rotated text can look clipped or appear not to wrap normally.
- Horizontal alignment: Settings such as Fill or Center Across Selection can change how the content appears.
As a last resort, use Home → Clear → Clear Formats on a test copy or carefully selected range. This can remove intentional colors, borders, number formats, alignment, and other design choices, so it should not be the first repair.
Fix formula-generated text
A formula result can wrap like other cell content when it returns text. The same row-height and uninterrupted-string limitations still apply.

To create a natural wrap point between two values, use a space:
=A1&" "&B1To insert a line-feed character at a deliberate position, use:
=A1&CHAR(10)&B1For the second formula, enable Wrap Text and AutoFit the row. Adding CHAR(10) alone will not fix a fixed row height, merged-cell layout, protected sheet, or conflicting formatting. Also verify that the formula returns the text you expect rather than a blank, error, or unexpectedly long uninterrupted value.
Windows, Mac, and Excel for the web
The core workflow is the same in current Microsoft 365, Excel for the web, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016: select the cells and use Home → Wrap Text. Microsoft also documents the feature for current Mac editions.
Ribbon labels, available commands, and keyboard shortcuts can vary between Windows, Mac, and browser versions. Use the ribbon path where possible, and use platform-specific shortcuts only for the platform they describe.
