“Updating Failed” and “Publishing Failed” are symptom messages, not diagnoses. A WordPress core update changes files on the server, while publishing or saving a post depends on the editor, plugins, browser, authentication, and the REST API. Use the matching workflow below, change one variable at a time, and make a backup before replacing core files or changing server settings.

First, identify which operation failed

Message or symptom What is failing Start here
“Updating Failed” in Dashboard updates WordPress cannot download, authenticate, or replace core files Back up the database and files, then check the exact update message, filesystem access, and any leftover .maintenance file.
“Publishing Failed” or “Updating Failed” while editing a post The editor cannot complete a save or publish request Clear the browser cache, isolate plugin conflicts, and inspect the failed REST API request.
Plugin or theme auto-updates do not run The scheduled update process, usually WP-Cron, is not completing Review Tools > Site Health for background-update and Cron errors.

The same wording can appear for unrelated causes, so do not apply a core-file repair to an editor problem or disable the REST API to solve a publishing error.

Fix a failed WordPress core update

1. Create a recovery point

Back up both the site files and the database before manual recovery. A core upgrade changes WordPress installation files, and a backup gives you a way back if a file copy or database step is interrupted.

2. Use the exact dashboard message as a clue

  • FTP or connection credentials requested: WordPress could not modify files directly under the current server ownership and permission setup. WordPress chooses its update method according to file ownership; do not apply broad, recursive permission or ownership commands without knowing your host’s configuration.
  • Download or connection failure: Confirm that the server has working internet access and retry. If the host blocks outbound downloads or your account lacks filesystem access, ask the hosting provider or server administrator to investigate.
  • “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance” or a persistent failed-update notice: An interrupted update may have left a .maintenance file in the WordPress base directory.

3. Remove a stale .maintenance file

Using FTP or your host’s file manager, open the WordPress root (the directory containing wp-admin and wp-includes) and remove .maintenance if it remains after the failed update. Do not delete similarly named files. Afterward, retry the update or proceed with the manual procedure below.

4. Recover WordPress manually when the one-click update cannot complete

Read the current official WordPress manual-update procedure before changing files. The short sequence is:

  1. Download the WordPress package that matches the update you intend to install.
  2. Back up the site, then deactivate plugins so they cannot interfere during replacement.
  3. Replace the existing wp-admin and wp-includes directories with the versions from the package.
  4. Copy the distribution files from the package’s wp-content into the existing wp-content directory as instructed, preserving your existing content, uploads, themes, plugins, and configuration.
  5. Visit /wp-admin. If WordPress requests a database upgrade, complete that step, then reactivate plugins and test the site.

Never overwrite wp-config.php or your existing uploads simply because they are present in the downloaded package. If you are unsure which files belong to your installation, stop and involve your host or a WordPress administrator.

5. Understand update timing

WordPress checks for available updates approximately every 12 hours, with the check time randomized. A release that appeared recently may therefore not show immediately; use the Dashboard’s update check or retry later rather than assuming the update is unavailable.

Fix “Publishing Failed” or a post that will not save

1. Perform the low-risk checks first

  1. Save any text you can recover locally.
  2. Clear the browser cache, reload the editor, and try Save Draft before Publish.
  3. Temporarily deactivate plugins one at a time, testing a draft save after each change. When the error disappears, restore unrelated plugins and contact the conflicting plugin’s maintainer about a compatible version.

Changing one variable at a time is important: a generic editor notice does not by itself prove that a plugin, theme, browser, or host is responsible.

2. Check the REST API request in the block editor

The block editor sends REST API requests to save and publish content. Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network tab, reproduce the failure, and inspect the request that returns an error. Note its URL, HTTP status, and response body; REST responses use JSON and commonly include an error code and message. Use Tools > Site Health as a second check.

If the request is blocked or returns an authentication, routing, or server error, investigate the site’s rewrite rules, login cookies, security software, caching layer, and hosting configuration with your administrator or host. A firewall or security plugin may be rejecting the request, but the failed response—not the wording of the editor banner—should guide the diagnosis.

Do not disable the REST API. WordPress states that disabling it breaks Administration functionality that depends on an active API. Fix the request path, authentication, or server rule instead.

3. Test outside the current browser session

After clearing the cache, try a current private-window session or another browser. If saving works there, stale scripts, cookies, or an extension in the original session are more likely than a server-side publishing failure. Re-enable extensions one at a time if needed.

When plugin or theme automatic updates fail

Plugin and theme auto-updates use a separate scheduling mechanism from a one-click WordPress core update. In Tools > Site Health, review the Background updates and WP-Cron checks. Cron failures, blocked loopback requests, or host restrictions can prevent scheduled updates even when manual updates work.

Keep a restorable backup before enabling automatic plugin or theme updates. If Site Health reports a Cron or loopback problem, give the error details to your host or administrator; do not assume that repairing .maintenance or replacing core directories will fix scheduling.

What not to do

  • Do not delete random WordPress files or overwrite wp-config.php during a manual update.
  • Do not set every file and directory to permissive ownership or permissions as a first response.
  • Do not disable the REST API to hide an editor error.
  • Do not change several plugins, security rules, and server settings at once; you will lose the evidence showing which change mattered.
  • Do not treat the phrase “Updating Failed” as proof that the core update system is broken when it appears inside the post editor.

When to involve your host or administrator

Escalate when you cannot access the WordPress root, the server cannot reach the update package, ownership differs between files, REST requests fail before WordPress handles them, or Site Health reports persistent Cron or loopback errors. Provide the exact dashboard notice, the failing REST request’s status and response, the WordPress version, and the time of the failure. Those details are more useful than repeatedly retrying the same operation.
