If Rails fails with an error such as Error loading shared library libssl.so.1.1, the failure is usually below Rails: the wkhtmltopdf executable cannot load a native library in the environment where it runs. First identify the exact executable and missing library, then make the binary, operating system, libc, architecture, and runtime libraries compatible. Changing Rails views or PDF options will not fix a process that cannot start.
What the error means
Wicked PDF integrates PDF generation into Rails, but wkhtmltopdf is a separate native command-line process. When the operating-system loader reports a missing shared library, the executable has failed before it can render your HTML. The useful clues are the full missing library name, the binary Rails launched, and the runtime environment of the failing process. The Wicked PDF documentation describes the external executable and its configuration; the wkhtmltopdf downloads guidance explains why binaries may depend on particular system libraries.
A library filename such as libssl.so.1.1 is not interchangeable with every other OpenSSL library. The filename identifies an expected shared-library interface. A runtime that only provides a different ABI may not satisfy it, even if a newer OpenSSL version is installed.
Diagnose the failing runtime before changing Rails
Run diagnostics in the same container or host, architecture, user context, and environment used by the Rails web process or background worker. A successful check from your laptop or a container build stage does not establish that the final production process can start the executable.

- Capture the full error. Keep the complete loader message, including every missing library filename. Do not reduce it to “wkhtmltopdf failed.”
- Find the executable Rails actually uses. Check the configured path and the service’s
PATH; do not assume the shell command resolves to the same binary. - Record the platform. Identify the distribution and release, CPU architecture, and libc family and version. This matters especially when distinguishing Alpine’s musl from glibc-based distributions.
- Identify how the binary arrived. It may come from an operating-system package, a copied file, or a Ruby gem. Record the package and version where possible.
- Inspect dependencies. Use the dependency-inspection tools available for that platform.
lddis commonly available on Linux, but tools and output vary; inspect the unresolved dependencies rather than treating one command as universal.
Also run wkhtmltopdf --version in the target environment. If this command itself produces the loader error, you have isolated the failure from Rails rendering.
Confirm which executable Wicked PDF selects
Wicked PDF can be configured with an explicit executable path. If more than one provider or copied binary is present, selecting a path deliberately removes ambiguity. Compare that path with the binary you inspected in the running app environment.

endUse a path that exists in the final runtime image and is executable by the Rails service user. The project documentation also describes the wkhtmltopdf-binary gem as a way to supply a binary for many Linux and macOS installations. Treat that as a packaging option, not proof that every version supports every platform or includes every needed system library. Verify the actual executable and its dependencies where Rails runs.

Match the binary to the operating system and libraries
The official wkhtmltopdf packaging FAQ describes incompatibilities caused by differing system-library versions, OpenSSL compatibility, and libc expectations. It notes that Alpine uses musl rather than glibc and that generic builds historically did not work there. Do not treat “Linux” as a sufficient compatibility target.

- Establish whether the binary expects glibc or musl, and whether the final image supplies that libc.
- Compare the missing OpenSSL SONAME with the libraries actually present. For example, a request for
libssl.so.1.1is not fulfilled merely by having another OpenSSL ABI installed. - Prefer a package or build explicitly intended for the deployment distribution, release, and architecture, or use a base image compatible with a supported build.
- In a multi-stage container, install required runtime libraries in the final image stage. Dependencies present only in a discarded build stage are unavailable to the deployed process.
- After changing the image, rerun the version and dependency checks there, as the same user and environment that run Rails.
The downloads page lists wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 as its stable series released June 11, 2020. That is the page’s stated release information, not confirmation that 0.12.6 is the latest release or that its packages suit a current operating system. Check package availability and compatibility for your target environment rather than relying on an old package table.
Choose a fix based on the specific error
libssl.so.1.1 or libcrypto.so.1.1 is missing
Determine whether the selected binary was linked against OpenSSL 1.1 while the runtime provides a different ABI. A Wicked PDF issue opened April 25, 2024 reports a Rails 7 application with Wicked PDF 2.7.0 and wkhtmltopdf 0.12.5 in an Alpine Docker image. The reporter described an OpenSSL 3 environment and errors requesting both libssl.so.1.1 and libcrypto.so.1.1. This illustrates a binary/runtime mismatch for that reported setup; it is not a compatibility matrix or a universal package recipe. Use a binary and runtime combination that supports one another, or provide the required compatible library through supported packages. Avoid assuming a newer library satisfies an older SONAME request.

Check the executable path, architecture, loader/interpreter, libc, and all unresolved dependencies. An incorrect or incompatible binary may fail in ways that do not point to one obvious library. If the app launches a different file than your manual check, fix the configured path or service environment first.
The failure occurs only on Alpine
Check the libc expectation before adding packages at random. A generic binary built for glibc may not run on a musl-based Alpine image. Select a build intended for the relevant Alpine environment, if available, or use a base image compatible with the binary you need. Confirm by running the executable and a minimal conversion inside the final image.
You are packaging for Lambda or another extracted runtime
The wkhtmltopdf downloads page gives a Lambda-style example that sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/lib and FONTCONFIG_PATH=/opt/fonts. Those locations belong to that example’s layout, not a universal Rails configuration. The distribution-specific libraries, configuration, and fonts must accompany the package, and the environment variables must point to their actual locations in your deployment.

Do not symlink a different library version to the missing SONAME unless the library vendor documents ABI compatibility. A symlink can hide the initial loader message while leaving an incompatible program that crashes or behaves unpredictably.
Verify the repair end to end
- Rebuild or update the final deployment image with the selected binary and required runtime packages.
- As the Rails service user, run the resolved executable’s version command and inspect its dependencies in that image.
- Run a minimal conversion from HTML to PDF inside the same runtime. Confirm the process exits successfully and produces a readable PDF.
- Generate a PDF through the actual Rails path, including the relevant web process or job worker.
- If the executable now starts but styles or images are missing, investigate rendering configuration separately. Wicked PDF’s documentation discusses absolute asset references; that is a document-rendering issue, not a shared-library startup failure.
When to keep wkhtmltopdf—and when to replace it
The project’s status page describes its Qt/WebKit foundation as old and points to alternatives for different rendering needs. Keep the current renderer when its output meets your requirements and you can deploy a reproducible, compatible binary/runtime pair. Consider alternatives when modern JavaScript rendering, security constraints, or ongoing platform compatibility make the existing deployment unsuitable.

The cited project pages do not establish that one replacement is best for every Rails application. Compare representative PDFs, page breaks, fonts, assets, JavaScript needs, deployment reproducibility, and migration effort.
Security implications for Rails PDF generation
The official downloads guidance warns against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML and says user-supplied HTML or JavaScript must be sanitized because it can put the server at risk. The project status page recommends using a mandatory access control system such as AppArmor or SELinux to constrain risk. If users can influence content being rendered, treat PDF generation as execution of a potentially hostile input: sanitize appropriately and isolate the rendering process rather than exposing it unrestricted access to the application environment.
