If wkhtmltopdf exits with Exit with code 1 due to network error: RemoteHostClosedError, Qt detected that a remote connection closed before the complete response was received. That message describes what happened to a request; it does not identify why it happened or prove that the main page, rather than an image, stylesheet, font, script, or redirect, was responsible. Find the failing URL from the same runtime environment as wkhtmltopdf before changing settings.
What “RemoteHostClosedError” means
The Qt Project defines QNetworkReply::RemoteHostClosedError as error code 2: “the remote server closed the connection prematurely, before the entire reply was received and processed.” Qt’s QNetworkReply documentation defines the symptom, not its root cause. A server, proxy, load balancer, firewall, or other part of the network path may be involved; the message alone does not establish which.

Do not assume every such failure is a TLS problem, DNS issue, timeout, proxy misconfiguration, or wkhtmltopdf bug. Qt reports distinct errors for conditions such as host not found, timeout, SSL handshake failure, and proxy closure. Preserve the complete stderr text and context so you can distinguish them.
Identify the request that failed first
The reported URL may be a subresource rather than the page passed to wkhtmltopdf. HTML can trigger separate requests for images, CSS, fonts, JavaScript, and redirected destinations. A page that appears to load in a browser is not evidence that every request succeeds from the converter’s host or container.
#1 Best Overall
- Record the input URL, time of failure, exit status, wkhtmltopdf version/build, operating system or container, and full stderr output.
- Inspect the HTML and its redirects for remote images, stylesheets, fonts, scripts, and other resources.
- Use the error output and available server, proxy, or network logs to identify the precise URL that failed. If the output does not identify it, reproduce requests individually from the converter environment or use logs that expose the requested URLs.
The historical wkhtmltopdf issue #2787 illustrates why separating page and image requests matters: its author described slow images and asked how to wait for the last one. Opened February 7, 2016, the issue is marked NeedInfo and records no resolution on the visible issue page. It is not proof that slow images cause all RemoteHostClosedError failures or that a particular option fixes them.
Reproduce the failure from wkhtmltopdf’s environment
Request the identified URL from the same host or container, with the same DNS, outbound network policy, proxy variables, credentials, and relevant headers as the conversion process. A request from a laptop or interactive shell is only a comparison: a service can run with different environment variables, credentials, routing, or certificate trust.
- DNS and egress: Check whether the runtime can resolve the hostname and reach the destination under its network policy.
- Proxy path: Confirm whether the request uses a proxy, whether it is reachable and authenticated, and whether the destination should bypass it.
- HTTP behavior: Inspect the response status and headers, redirect chain, and whether the connection closes before the response completes.
- TLS: Inspect the handshake and certificate diagnostics rather than presuming a certificate fault from this error alone.
- Intermediaries: When available, correlate timestamps with the remote server, firewall, load balancer, and proxy logs.
Compare these results with a browser request only to locate a difference in network path or client behavior. Do not treat a successful browser load as confirmation that the converter’s request succeeded.

The wkhtmltopdf usage documentation describes proxy settings from the proxy, all_proxy, and http_proxy environment variables, as well as the --proxy and --bypass-proxy-for options. Check the environment where the service or container actually runs; it may differ from your login shell.
- Verify the proxy hostname, port, authentication, and reachability from the converter runtime.
- Check whether the failing hostname is intended to use the proxy or bypass it.
- Test a direct connection only if your network policy permits it; changing the route can affect security and access controls.
- After changing environment or CLI settings, retry the specific failed resource and check the PDF for missing content.
Wait for page readiness when timing is the issue
If client-side code builds required page content asynchronously, wkhtmltopdf provides two useful controls. --window-status <windowStatus> waits until the page’s window.status equals the chosen string. --javascript-delay <msec> waits a fixed number of milliseconds for JavaScript activity. These options address page readiness; neither repairs a connection that is being closed prematurely.
Prefer an explicit readiness signal when you control the page
Have the page set a known status only after the content needed in the PDF is ready, then wait for that value:
wkhtmltopdf --window-status ready https://example.invalid/page.html output.pdf
This uses the documented option, but the page must actually set window.status to ready after its required work. For example, page code you control could set the status in the completion path for the assets it needs. If an asset fails, the readiness code should not falsely signal success unless an incomplete PDF is acceptable.
Rank #2
Use a delay as a diagnostic or when you cannot add a signal
Try a fixed delay to see whether conversion is racing asynchronous rendering, and adjust it only as needed for that test. A delay is not confirmation that an image or other remote asset loaded; inspect both the stderr and generated PDF. The 2016 issue about slow images does not document a universal delay value or a maintainer-confirmed solution.
Choose how conversion handles failed page or media loads
Load-error options change what wkhtmltopdf does after a request fails; they do not restore a connection or make missing content appear. The usage documentation lists these behaviors:
| Option | Documented choices | Documented default | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
--load-error-handling |
abort, ignore, skip |
abort |
A page-load failure needs a defined policy. |
--load-media-error-handling |
abort, ignore, skip |
ignore |
A media request fails and you need a defined policy. |
Choose ignore or skip only when continuing without the affected content is acceptable. The exact resulting PDF depends on what failed and the page; review the output and logs. For example, if omitted media is acceptable, you can set the media policy explicitly:
wkhtmltopdf --load-media-error-handling ignore https://example.invalid/page.html output.pdf
That command does not establish that the response was fully received or that all required page content is present. For documents where completeness matters, keep a failure policy that surfaces the problem and fix the underlying request instead.
Do not disable TLS checks as a generic workaround
A premature connection close does not by itself show that certificate validation failed. Qt’s QNetworkReply documentation warns that calling the SSL error-ignoring method without inspecting the actual errors will most likely pose a security risk. Do not disable certificate checks just to suppress a network error.
First establish from TLS diagnostics that certificate validation is the problem. Then correct the trust configuration or certificate chain, or handle only a narrowly understood exception securely. Ignoring SSL errors can expose the request to risks that a network symptom alone does not justify.

- Find the failed URL. Determine whether it is the main document or a subresource, including a redirect destination.
- Repeat from the converter runtime. Use the same container or host, network route, proxy variables, and credentials.
- Check the request path. Inspect DNS, proxy behavior, TLS diagnostics, HTTP status and redirects, and relevant intermediary logs.
- Test readiness only if appropriate. Use
--window-statusif the page can signal that required work is complete; use--javascript-delayas a bounded timing test. - Select an error policy deliberately. Abort when missing content is unacceptable; ignore or skip only when the resulting omission is tolerable and checked.
- Verify the artifact. Review the PDF and stderr. A successful process exit or a longer wait alone does not prove that every required resource is present.
Common failure patterns and fixes
| What you observe | What it may indicate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The browser loads the page, but conversion fails. | The browser and converter may use different DNS, proxies, credentials, trust stores, or egress routes. | Repeat the failing request from the converter’s runtime environment and compare its path with the browser’s. |
| The document loads but an image or font is missing. | A subresource may be the failing request; page readiness or media error policy may affect the result. | Identify and request that resource directly from the converter environment; check the PDF and the media policy. |
| A longer JavaScript delay changes the output. | Rendering may depend on asynchronous page activity, though this does not prove all assets loaded. | Prefer an explicit page-controlled status signal where possible; verify required resources in the output. |
| Changing TLS validation seems to suppress an error. | A security-sensitive setting may be masking a certificate issue, or the original error may have another cause. | Inspect actual TLS errors and repair trust configuration; do not leave certificate checks disabled as a blanket fix. |
| Using ignore or skip allows a PDF to be produced. | The converter continued under a failure policy; content may still be absent. | Confirm omissions are acceptable and inspect the output. Fix the request if completeness is required. |
Performance, reliability, and version context
A fixed JavaScript delay adds at least that waiting time to a conversion, even when the page becomes ready sooner; too short a delay can still capture incomplete content. An explicit readiness signal can express a condition more accurately when you control the page, but it must reflect the assets your document actually needs. Neither mechanism guarantees remote-server reliability.

- Used Book in Good Condition
The wkhtmltopdf usage page identifies its documented build as version 0.12.6 with patched Qt. Error details and behavior may depend on the installed build and runtime, so include that version/build when diagnosing a case. Do not assume that changing a wait option, load-error policy, or proxy setting addresses the same cause: they act at different points in the request and conversion path.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a screenshot or PDF rather than troubleshoot a local wkhtmltopdf installation, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website capture API. Its pre-capture cleanup accepts consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
For a PDF response, request the PDF output format using the API’s supported parameters; for an image, this one-call example saves WebP:

What information to include when asking for help
A case-specific diagnosis needs the complete stderr output, exact failing URL if known, wkhtmltopdf version/build, operating system or container, and whether that URL succeeds from the converter’s runtime environment. Also include relevant proxy configuration and whether the failure concerns the main document or a subresource. These details help distinguish a transport failure from a page-readiness or output-policy issue without guessing at a universal fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does RemoteHostClosedError mean the website is blocking wkhtmltopdf?
No. The error establishes that the peer closed a connection before the complete reply was received; it does not identify the reason or prove intentional blocking.
