Most wkhtmltopdf installation errors on Ubuntu come down to one of four mismatches: the Ubuntu release, CPU architecture, package origin, or libraries available from the configured repositories. First identify those details, then install a package built for that system rather than forcing APT to accept dependencies from a different Ubuntu release.

Identify your Ubuntu release, architecture, and package source

Before changing packages, record which Ubuntu release and CPU architecture you are using. Ubuntu 24.04 Noble, 22.04 Jammy, and older releases do not necessarily have identical package versions or dependencies. An upstream package for one release may not fit another, even when both packages are named wkhtmltopdf.

  1. Check the release with lsb_release -a or read /etc/os-release. Note the codename, such as noble or jammy.
  2. Check the architecture with dpkg --print-architecture. Common outputs include amd64 and arm64.
  3. Determine whether the installed or intended package comes from Ubuntu’s archive or an upstream wkhtmltox release. Do not treat packages from those origins as interchangeable.
  4. Save the full APT or dpkg error, including the package name and any library version it says is missing.

The project’s downloads page lists stable wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 builds for Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy, 20.04 Focal, 18.04 Bionic, and 16.04 Xenial, with architecture availability varying by release. Its page says it supports LTS versions and suggests trying an older listed LTS if a major release is not listed. The project page gives June 11, 2020 as the stable release date, so check the package’s current suitability and security posture rather than assuming that a listed build is recent. wkhtmltopdf downloads

Ubuntu maintains its own packages. Ubuntu 24.04 Noble package metadata lists 0.12.6-2build2 in Universe; Jammy source package metadata lists 0.12.6-2 in Universe. Those are release-specific package facts, not a guarantee that either version is available or appropriate on every Ubuntu release or architecture. Check the package metadata for your release and use APT with that release’s configured repositories. Ubuntu Noble wkhtmltopdf package · Ubuntu Jammy wkhtmltopdf package

Ubuntu Noble’s package metadata lists runtime dependencies that include libc, Qt core, GUI, network, print support, SVG and widgets libraries, Qt WebKit, and libstdc++. A dependency failure can therefore reflect an unavailable or incompatible library in the configured repositories; it is not necessarily fixed by downloading one missing file from an unrelated source.

Upstream release package

If you need an upstream build, select its Ubuntu package for the exact target release and architecture from the official download table. Upstream explains that distro-specific builds account for differences in system library versions and runtime configuration, including fonts. Avoid installing a package for another Ubuntu release or trying to satisfy it by pulling libraries from that release: that can leave the system with a mixed and difficult-to-maintain dependency set. Check upstream package choices

Do not assume matching names mean matching behavior

Upstream documents that some wkhtmltopdf features require its patched Qt build, while many Linux distributions may compile without those patches. A distro package and an upstream package can therefore behave differently despite sharing the same command name or application version. Choose based on the feature you need, then test that feature against the actual installed binary. The available package pages do not validate every feature on every Ubuntu build.

Resolve APT and dpkg dependency errors safely

Use the error message to distinguish a repository-resolution problem from an unsuitable package. Do not start by adding arbitrary repositories, forcing dependency versions, or downloading individual shared libraries. The package must match both the operating system and architecture, and its dependencies must be available from compatible repositories.

  1. Confirm the target. Compare the release codename and architecture you recorded with the package’s release and architecture.
  2. Check the package origin. Decide whether you want Ubuntu’s archive build or an upstream wkhtmltox build. Avoid mixing the two merely to make an installation command complete.
  3. For an Ubuntu package, inspect the metadata for your release. Ensure the relevant Ubuntu repositories, including Universe when required by the package, are configured for that same release. Let APT resolve dependencies from those repositories.
  4. For an upstream .deb, use the matching build. If APT reports a missing versioned library, stop and verify the release and architecture before taking any other action. A dependency requirement from a different Ubuntu release is a warning that the package may be the wrong build.
  5. Keep the entire error. A message such as “unmet dependencies” without the package names and required versions is not enough to distinguish an unavailable repository component from an incompatible package.

Upstream says a package can be extracted if it cannot be installed, but extraction does not eliminate runtime dependencies. Treat that only as a controlled-environment fallback: the program still needs compatible system libraries to run. Upstream installation notes

Verify the binary and the feature you need

After installation, check which executable is being run and which version it reports. Then make a minimal conversion from a trusted local HTML file. For example, create a simple file with a heading and a paragraph, then run:

wkhtmltopdf sample.html sample.pdf

A successful basic conversion confirms that the command can launch and produce a PDF; it does not prove that every option or patched-Qt-dependent feature works. If your application relies on headers or footers, test those specifically against the installed binary. Do not infer capabilities solely from the program’s name or version string.

If the command itself is not found, check whether installation completed and whether the executable is on the current shell’s PATH. If the command launches but exits with a shared-library error, record the missing library and compare it with the package’s release and dependency metadata. If a PDF is created but a particular feature is absent, investigate whether the installed build includes the required Qt patches.

Troubleshoot common failure patterns

Symptom Likely issue to investigate Safer next step
APT reports unmet dependencies or a required library version cannot be installed The package may target a different Ubuntu release or architecture, or a needed repository component may not be enabled. Recheck the codename and architecture, inspect package metadata for that release, and keep dependencies within its configured repositories.
dpkg accepts the package file but installation does not complete The package can still be incompatible or have dependencies APT cannot resolve. Use the matching release-specific package and retain the complete dpkg and APT output. Extraction is not a fix for runtime dependencies.
Installation succeeds, but the command fails with a missing shared library A runtime library is absent or the selected binary does not match the system’s available libraries. Verify package origin, release and architecture; do not fetch a random library build to silence the error.
A conversion works but a requested option, such as a header or footer, does not The installed package may use unpatched Qt. Identify the exact binary and test the feature; compare the distro and upstream build characteristics before changing packages.
The Ubuntu release is not listed in upstream’s download table There may be no upstream package explicitly built for that release. Check Ubuntu’s package for your release or follow upstream’s stated suggestion to consider an older listed LTS only after assessing compatibility. Do not silently substitute another release’s dependencies.

No single installation command is safe to prescribe without knowing the release, architecture, package origin, and error. Those details determine whether the correct next step is enabling a repository, choosing another package, or investigating a feature difference.

Account for security and maintenance

wkhtmltopdf renders HTML and JavaScript, so accepting untrusted input is a security boundary, not just a rendering choice. The project explicitly warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server on which it is run!” wkhtmltopdf security warning

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-6232-1, published July 20, 2023, describes a same-origin-policy flaw: specially crafted HTML could expose sensitive information. Its listed fixed package versions apply to the specific older Ubuntu releases named in that notice; do not apply those version rows to other releases. Check the notice and security status for the Ubuntu release you actually run. Ubuntu Security Notice USN-6232-1

Upstream’s status page said in its 2020 account that Qt 4, which wkhtmltopdf uses, had been unsupported since 2015 and its WebKit had not been updated since 2012. It points readers toward modern browser printing APIs as an alternative, but does not provide a current feature-by-feature migration comparison. For repeated installations or new systems, weigh that maintenance context against the effort of resolving package issues. wkhtmltopdf status

If you need website screenshots or PDFs rather than a wkhtmltopdf binary on your Ubuntu machine, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. Before capture it can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does wkhtmltopdf say it was compiled without patched Qt?

That message indicates the installed build lacks the Qt patches required by some wkhtmltopdf features. Ubuntu and upstream builds can differ, so identify the binary and check the particular feature you need.

Can I install an upstream package built for another Ubuntu release?

A different-release package may require libraries that are unavailable or incompatible on your system. Choose a build matching the release and architecture, or use the Ubuntu package for your release.
