Exit with code 1 due to network error: ContentNotFoundError means wkhtmltopdf encountered a problem loading content referenced by the page; it does not identify which resource failed. Find the first failed URL or file path in the complete stderr output, then check that exact resource from the same machine, container, and execution context as the PDF process. Missing images and relative CSS or icon paths are documented triggers, but the failure can depend on the HTML, paths, wrapper, and wkhtmltopdf build.
What the error means—and what it does not
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML by loading the document and its referenced resources, such as images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts. The error ContentNotFoundError indicates that content the renderer tried to load was not found or could not be loaded. The message alone does not reveal whether the problem is a missing image, a broken relative path, an inaccessible remote URL, or another resource-loading failure.
Do not treat “network error” as proof that your internet connection is down. A local file:// path or a relative asset reference can fail too. Nor does reaching a progress message such as “Done” establish that every resource loaded successfully: the process can still exit with code 1 after rendering progress has advanced.

Find the exact resource that failed
- Capture the whole failure. Save the complete wkhtmltopdf command, standard error (stderr), standard output, and exit status from the failing job. If a wrapper such as PDFKit, jsreport, or an application export launches wkhtmltopdf, capture the underlying command and logs from that job rather than relying only on the wrapper’s summary.
- Search stderr for load warnings and errors. Look for lines like
Warning: Failed to loadorError: Failed to load. Record the full URL or path, any HTTP status or file error shown, and whether the resource was an image, stylesheet, script, font, or document. - Start with the first failure. A page can reference many assets; use the logged failed resource as the first test rather than changing multiple settings at once. The error may not explicitly identify the ultimate cause, so keep the full log available.
- Reproduce in the same execution context. Fetch or open the exact resource from the host or container that runs the PDF job, using the same network and access conditions. A URL that works on a developer laptop may not work from a server, container, or isolated worker.
For example, if the first logged failure is an image URL, check that specific image URL from the rendering environment. If it is a relative icon referenced by CSS, check how that reference resolves from the generated HTML file. The reported cases establish these as plausible triggers, not as a ranking of how often each cause occurs.
Fix the failure according to the resource and path
Remote URLs: verify reachability and access
For an HTTP(S) resource, check that it still exists and that the PDF process can reach it. Follow the response path through redirects and verify whether the destination requires authentication. Also check DNS, network routes, firewall rules, and the TLS certificate behavior visible from that environment. A resource that is private, moved, temporarily unavailable, or accessible only with browser-session credentials may not load for the renderer.
If the resource is optional, replace it with a valid fallback or remove the reference. If it is essential to the PDF, fix its availability or access before retrying. Do not assume the page URL being rendered and each asset URL have the same access requirements.

Relative paths and temporary HTML files
A relative reference is interpreted in relation to a base location. With a wrapper, the HTML may be written to a temporary directory before wkhtmltopdf reads it. In that case, a CSS declaration that worked relative to the application template can point somewhere else when evaluated from the temporary HTML file. A BookStack issue report associated relative icon paths in generated CSS with the error; the reporter said removing those relative references stopped that reproduction.
- Check the actual working directory and location of any generated or temporary HTML file.
- Inspect the HTML and CSS that wkhtmltopdf receives, not only the original template.
- Convert asset references to paths that resolve from the renderer’s actual base location, or provide the correct base asset location using the wrapper’s supported configuration.
- For local files, verify that the process can read the file and that the path is valid in its own filesystem. A path on the host may not exist at the same location inside a container.
There is no single base-path setting that can be prescribed for every wrapper and deployment from these issue examples. Confirm the generated input and wrapper configuration for your setup.
Isolate optional assets
If the log is incomplete or several assets may be involved, remove or disable one class at a time—images, stylesheets, fonts, then scripts—and rerun the same job. Alternatively, replace optional references with known-valid fallbacks. This narrows the search while preserving a reproducible input. The cited cases associate failures with referenced resources, but do not establish that any one resource type is responsible in every installation.

Separate wkhtmltopdf problems from wrapper problems
When practical, run the equivalent wkhtmltopdf command directly using the same HTML and options. If the direct command succeeds but the wrapper fails, compare the wrapper’s generated HTML, temporary-file location, working directory, passed arguments, and environment. If both fail with the same resource path in stderr, investigate that resource and its access from the process environment first.
A direct command is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the wrapper is defective: wrappers can alter inputs and execution context, and a difference in output may be due to either. Preserve the exact inputs and options for each run so the comparison is meaningful.
Why --load-error-handling ignore may not solve it
Do not rely on --load-error-handling ignore as a universal fix for ContentNotFoundError. A 2014 wkhtmltopdf issue reports the same exit message while that option was set. Another report describes an ignored failed JavaScript resource followed by the final error. These examples show that ignoring load errors does not guarantee a successful exit in every failure mode.

If you test the option, do so only after recording the failing resource and the original behavior. Confirm that the resulting PDF contains the required content and that the command’s exit status is acceptable to your application. Silencing or bypassing an error is not a substitute for resolving a missing essential asset.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Repeatedly retrying a failing capture without changing the resource, path, or environment may reproduce the same error. First identify and correct the failing dependency; then rerun the same job and verify both the PDF contents and the process exit status. For automated exports, retain stderr and the exit code with job logs so a later failure can be traced to a concrete URL or path.

Resource loading also affects reliability: a PDF that depends on remote assets depends on their availability and the rendering process’s access to them. Where assets are essential, ensure the rendering environment can reach them; where they are optional, provide a fallback or omit them. The issue reports do not establish a general performance benchmark, failure rate, or cost impact for these cases.
